A comic I made recently. You cannot imagine how hard it was to find the courage to draw and post this, because my fears have grew so much stronger than me. Even setting he/him pronouns in my bio feels scary and unsafe. And drawing that comic felt like a crime.

this was such an incredibly raw moment for hawks, i just hate how they did it in the anime. this wasn't about supporting midoriya or wanting to see their side win, it was about the emotional connection between these two characters. and that isn't a shadow behind hawks, thats a fucking bloodstain from dragging himself to tokoyami's side. i know it was such a small panel, but this is the most vulnerable moment we got from hawks in the entire manga, its such a shame it wasnt animated

Lol. Lmao even. This entire conversation occurred because Hawks was tripped up by mere sentiment. How Hawks is drawn here makes it even more obvious that it isn’t true that Hawks is unaffected emotionally: his eyes, mouth, and hands are all covered or at least obscured. The feathers also look erratic and aimed in all directions, with some even pointed at Hawks himself.

In context, this was Hawks’ first conscious lie in his confrontation with Twice. Everything Hawks said up until he pulled out the tape recorder was genuine. Hawks knows daylight heroes aren’t permitted to kill villains. Endeavor may have killed the Hood Noumu in public, but (1) the noumu are at least arguably dead, and (2) Endeavor had a strong argument for self defense there given how that noumu nearly succeeded in killing him. This situation involves more pre-meditation than what is normally acceptable and Hawks is well aware of that. So Hawks took out the tape recorder as a method of controlling the narrative after he consciously decided he was going to kill Twice. His face is completely blank when he says there is still a way forward for Twice because Hawks no longer believes that.

my friends who were around by its completion added different doodles in the ink to give it a more personal feel and it really ties it together for me :)

once again thinking about how much I love characters who create masks for themselves.

characters who are so utterly convinced that their true selves are unlovable or not worth it that they overcompensate with confidence, or suaveness, or just unbridled positivity that shines so bright no one can see the rot and sadness underneath until it's almost too late.

Who's just all smoke and mirrors, only letting the occasional bit of reality slip through before distracting the crowd too quickly for them to process it.

love me a dude(gn) that casually shrugs off every offer of a helping hand because they are so utterly convinced they aren't worth anything if they can't make it on their own.

I adore a character that have never fully shown themselves to anyone and never plan to (or have once and that's why they never want to again), regardless of the fact that their friends and family would only love them more if they did, and would be thrilled to help them if they just gave their loved ones half a chance.

and I am always thrilled when that character just fully breaks.

I love a character raised to be a weapon as much as the next guy. But what really gets me is a character raised to be a shield. Who can’t fathom being needed—or even being wanted— beyond keeping others safe. Who believe they are alive only to insure someone doesn’t die. no matter the cost. Characters who self-sacrifice not because they think they deserve it, but because no one else does deserve it, and it’s their job to protect.

Characters who’ve been told that’s why your important. Your worth something because this other person/ thing is important, and you are here solely to keep them safe.

Bonus points if it’s not a legitimate job they’ve been given. Maybe at one point it was, but now that they are free from it, they haven’t given up that mentality. No one is forcing or asking them to do this, but they need to. They need to in order to be deserving.
