Evergrace. EverQuest. RuneQuest. Runescape. Farscape.
There is so much amazing about this. It's an archeological museum in 530 BCE or so. Also, the exhibits are labeled in three languages. Also they apparently had replicas on display for some things, much like modern museums do.
Humanity has not really changed that much, and some of the ways in which we haven't changed are really good.
Y'all, I am BEGGING you to click through and read that short Wikipedia article. It's the earliest museum we've ever discovered. It was part of the state of Ur.
This is the Ur-Museum!
Some of the artifacts in this museum date as far back as the 20th century BCE, which would have been as long ago to Ennigaldi-Nanna as the fall of the western roman empire is for us
Thinking about the Ur-museum again đ

I'm co-hosting a game jam!
A game jam from 2024-02-01 to 2024-04-02 hosted by Lady Tabletop, sdunnewold, greenbriar & Sam Roberts. Welcome to the first ever Dice Explo
What is Dice Exploder? Each week, Sam Dunnewold and a rotating cohost break down one tabletop RPG mechanic as deep as they possibly can.
For the duration of the third season, we're running a game jam inspired by the podcast's premise. You can join the DE Discord , where there's a channel for this game jam, to discuss your submission with other participants and fans of the show.
Explode a game you love (or want to love) and remix, remake, or reinterpret it in part or whole.
Dice Exploder is about zooming in on a part of a game and making it everything. This jam is about taking your favorite part of a game and dragging it to the center of the experience. Want to turn that 400 page tome you can never get anyone to play into a single-page game? Go for it! Is there a combat sim game you're pretty sure is actually about running a coffee shop? Write those rules. Taking a setting apart down to the molecules and rewriting it as barely an echo of the original? Totally fair play.
The jam runs from Feb 1 to Apr 1.
#reblog#this seems exceptionally cool#but i genuinely can't think of a game i love#that is under a license i could explode#so unless i think of smth i am simply watching with interest
quick reblog just to address this because licensing is something I'm very aware of!
Fan art/works are generally legal as long as you don't profit off of them - yeah you're probably infringing on a copyright/trademark, but if you're not making money off of it, it's unlikely you'll face an legal consequences (unless it's libel/slander/lewd/other things that harm the copyright holder). So if you don't charge for the game you make, you probably are fine.
Now, there's a sort of icky area where you're stripping out parts of a game as is and giving them away for free - do not do that. That is not the point of the jam. it is not allowed in the jam. You're making something new, not plagiarising.
There's also fair use law to consider - if a work is transformative, there's no copyright violation.
No worries at all if these are considerations you don't want to have to make, or if you don't want to run even the slightest risk of copyright infringement! I just wanted to throw this out there as a clarification for anyone who doesn't know.
This is such a cool idea! The thought of breaking down a single mechanic in a game and building a whole new game out of it is fantastic! I really need to start thinking about this
I'm going to try and put something together for this! I've been enjoying Dice Exploder lately, so this is wonderfully timed for me.
As for what to make a game about, I am thinking about a lot of the weird bits in Troika in particular. The Initiative Stack/Sack, the inventory system (roll to retrieve, order matters), the clunky and charming skill system, could all be spun out into something else. I'm still mulling it over but there's definitely good raw material, and a kind license to riff off of.
Very excited!
Telling myself this every day so here's a meme
I, a fool: if Chess is so great, why isn't there a Chess 2?
Chess 2:
The long-awaited sequel to the now-second-most important game of all time
This is the third Chess 2 Iâve seen in the last few days.
absolutely cackling at this review
i love in fantasy when its like âking galamir the mighty golden eagle and his most trusted advisor who would never betray him, gruelworm bloodeye the treacherousâ
When my sister and I were kids we had this one action figure, who was actually a brutalized batman doll without his cape (the dog chewed half his head, too), who we dubbed âEvil Chancellor Traytorâ. The idea was that in the fictional society of our toys, âchancellorâ just came with the word âevilâ in front of it, as a matter of ancient tradition. Like âgrandâ or âhighâ or something along those lines.
Anyway, the running gag was that the king (an old Power Rangers knock-off doll) had absolute and unwavering faith in Evil Chancellor Traytor, who basically comported himself like a mix between Grima Wormtongue and Jafar from the Aladdin movies. Everyone was always sure that Evil Chancellor Traytor had something to do with the nefarious scheme of the day. The dude even carried around a poisoned knife called âthe kingslayerâ.
The additional twist on the joke, though, was that he never was behind anything. The king was actually right. Evil Chancellor Traytor was the most devoted civil servant in the entire Action Figure Dystopia. He spent his nights working on writing up new legislature to ensure that broken toys had access to mobility devices, was always on the lookout to acquire new shoeboxes for expanding city infrastructure, and drafted a proposal that once got half the âsettlementâ in my sister and Iâs closet moved to the upper shelf so that vulnerable toys were less likely to be snatched up by the dog.
The knife, as it turned out, was as symbolic as the âevilâ in his name. See, Action Figure Dystopia had a long history of corrupted monarchs getting too big for their thrones and exploiting the underclasses. The job of the Evil Chancellor was to always remain vigilant, and loyally serve a good ruler - or, if the regent should became a despot, to slay them on behalf of the people.
But since killing the king would be a terrible crime, the Evil Chancellor had to be the kind of person who would willingly die to spare the people from the plight of a wicked leader; because the murder would be pinned on them, in order to keep the âmachinery of politicsâ working as smoothly as ever.
Anyway, Evil Chancellor Traytor had a diary, in which my sister I would take turns writing out the most over-the-top good shit heâd done behind the scenes. Usually after everyone else had finished talking shit about him. I donât know why but we got the biggest kick out of being like:
Barbie With the Unfortunate Haircut: Oh that Evil Chancellor Traytor! Why canât the king see how wicked he is?!
Charmander From the Vending Machine: Char!
Jurassic Park Toy of Jeff Goldblum With Disturbingly Realistic Face: At least if someone puts a knife in the kingâs back, weâll know where to look!
Evil Chancellor Traytorâs Diary: Today I was feeding ducks at the park when I noticed another legless action figure sitting by the benches. I put a hundred dollars into his bag while he wasnât looking. I really need to increase budgeting to the medical treatment centers. If only we had enough glue, I think we would see far fewer toys trying to get by without limbs⊠*insert iconic evil laugh*
Anyway, Evil Chancellor Traytor eventually fell victim to one of my momâs cleaning sprees, and she decided he was too busted up to keep and tossed him out. My littler brother, who tended to follow my sister and Iâs games like he was watching a daily soap opera, cried so hard that we had to do a special âepisodeâ where one of the toys found the Evil Chancellorâs diary, and so he got a big huge memorial and the king threw himself into the empty grave and then ordered the toys driving the toy bulldozer to bury him so that âTraytorâs grave would have a bodyâ (this seemed very important for some reason).
And then we had the Quest For a New King. Somehow or another that ended up being a giant rubber snake called âTyrant King Cobraâ.
::closes tab, shuts off computer, and proceeds to have the best day ever just by knowing this exists::
i will always reblog Evil Chancellor Traytor
Reading Aaron Kingâs âIn a Mirrorâ and, well, this is the whole ballgame right here, ainât it?
Making a shitty one-page RPG called Oh Shit Itâs the Killer. The premise is simple: youâre a high schooler spending the weekend in the woods with your besties. The Killer is there also. He is trying to the Kill you
I say shitty not to demean the quality of my work but because itâs less an exercise in good game design and more an attempt to induce paranoid internal conflict that turns into murder (in game of course). It has like three mechanics and one of them actively encourages you to murder the other PCs
Great news!
Itâs done
I put like three braincells into this, so if thereâs anything about it that outright sucks, uh. Sorry not sorry, L + ratio + letâs use the 1-page restriction as an excuse for any unfun mechanics
âWhat if there was a game about being a genre-savvy slasher protagonist murdering their way to the role of Final Girl?â
âSounds cool when exactly does the PvP startâ
âcharacter creationâ

Was talking about sandbox design in a ttrpg server, and though this is a bit tongue-in-cheek, I think these really are good things to consider when you approach sandbox design in a ttrpg (and elsewhere!)
This is a GREAT way of thinking about TTRPG design! To be explicit, here's one way of looking at those:
The constraints. You probably could make an infinite sandbox if you wanted using generative tools like rollable tables, but specificity will likely serve you better, such as by making the sandbox a single island (if considering it more literally), or by focusing on a specific type of story you want to tell (a metaphorical sandbox). Additionally, you'll want to note what other constraints are relevant. What's the genre? What's the sub-genre? Is it designed for Troupe play? etc.
The setting. What do the open spaces look and feel like? What kind of terrain is on the island, or what kind of tropes do you want players to encounter? This can also include less literal terrain of a setting: the people, cultures, history, etc. What defines the world players will be exploring?
Points of interest. This is the good stuff, the stuff that drives the action. Who are the important characters and what are their means, motives, and methods? Where's the abandoned temple and what is its history? What recent event has rocked the status quo and how do the players get involved?
Character options. The stuff that will be most relevant to the players. These should be dependent on the constraints and the setting. Not just who they are and what they do, but also what are the actions available to them? What kind of characters can they make? What can those characters do? How can they affect the world? Can they change that authority figure's mind or are they too stuck in their ways? Is there a trail through the lava flows or are they a total blockade?
Hope this inspires many designers.
Really love this part of In Golden Flame
If you are piloting the one mech that mounts a fucking capital-ship grade railcannon on it you can just... Shoot down the orbital laser that's hangs over the entire mission like a menacing sword of damocles.
That's a thing you can just do. Just blapp it out of orbit.
I adore so much that the authors put that in as an option. Especially since at this point the PC's have just gotten to Level 2 and gotten hold of their unique mech chassis' instead of the generic starter ones.
So the person riding around in their brand new HA Barbarossa will feel like they're a huge badass after using their new cool mech to shoot down a orbital death laser.
Also, I love the Barbarossa so fucking much.
It's one of my favorite mechs
Just fucking look at it and it's anti-orbital platform railgun.
I realise that this was a pretty big edge case but I wrote it in because I had page space and I knew that somewhere, at least one player would decide "you know what? Fuck it! I want to shoot that piece of shit out of the sky!"
