Research Reading Week 2: Kelly Yun
Ruth La Ferla, “Another Summer of Love,” New Yorker, June 21, 2007
This article was the comeback of hippie trends in the summer of 2007. It is interesting because it goes back to the idea that the look was related to music such as bob Dylan, to what their mothers wore, and an era that “promoted the upending of conventions, improvisation, a frugal, laid-back way of life and an appropriation of he influences of a rapidly globalizing society”. This article goes into depth of how this trend is currently being seen in retail although with a modern touch to it such as leather. A customer described it as a “flowing sensual, kind of sexy acid trip”.
Megan Buerger, “Retracing the Steps of Fashion’s Long, Strage Trip,” Wall Street Journal, July 13, 2013
This articles goes into depth of how the hippie culture impacted fashion in a way that was not just a trend but also in the fashion industry today. The hippie of our modern day is the hipster. It is a way of expressing someone that might be “daring and avant-garde and liberating”. A point in my research I wanted to note on was how this article specifically said that fashion choices affect political views. This also goes with my archive visit. I noticed I did not see a lot of hippie fashion although even this article quotes that “hippies often made their own clothing”. I find this the most interesting because everyone was partially a fashion designer. And being a fashion designer contributed a lot to making a statement. Therefore, I think that fashion designers have a big role in a culture.
Shelby H. McIntyre and Christopher M. Miller, ”Social Utility and Fashion Behavior,” Marketing Letters , Vol. 3, No. 4 (Oct., 1992) , pp. 371-382
This article explores the outcome of behavioral simulation that studies the rold of social utility in fashion behavior from the results of a computer. “Social utility is defined as those benefits of a product or service that satisfy interpersonal needs. These exploratory results suggest that social utility is a prime determinate of fashion behavior, and that selected personality traints moderate behavioral responses to social influce in the fashion domain”. I thought this article could help my research paper go into detail about why certain social groups dress similar and if their personalities had any importance of it. Even the article agrees that social identity is made through what individuals buy.
