For my contribution to @crablorday, I present to you my Magnum Opus:

"Crablor at the Council of Elrond"

This is my first animation longer than a few seconds. It was very much a learning-by-doing experience.

I worked very hard on this, and even if it's far from perfect, I'm very, very proud of myself.

FAQ:

Why is Crablor not scuttling sideways?

Because the animation was too complicated

Because he used to be an elf and is used to walking forward.

before this post by @eilinelsghost I somehow never realised that I could use MY ACTUAL REAL-LIFE WORK for something more fun??

so I threw the official maps into a geographic information system and aligned them as best I could (grid in km)

And I very roughly vectorised some of the woods and rivers of Beleriand so I could measure them more easily:

Looks like I managed to get the size reasonably accurate. We're told in the Quenta that the length of Sirion from the Pass to the Mouths is 121 leagues (= 584.2 km) and that it's 40 leagues (= 193.1 km) from the confluence of Little & Greater Gelion to the confluence of Ascar and Gelion.

Only Narog should be 80 leagues (= 386.2 km) long but is >50 km longer than that for some reason …

(ignore the ellipsoidal lengths. we cannot use a map projection of course)

SO NOW I can tell you fun things like that the Isle of Balar is almost as large as Mallorca (3109 km²) and the Forest of Region is about the size (and shape) of South East England (19 144 km²)!

today I learned that in 2008, the city council of florence overturned dante’s sentence of execution if he returned from exile. yes, dante’s inferno dante, who died in 1321.

but the funniest part of this is not that they were debating the exile of a man who has been dead for over 500 years.

the funniest part is that the vote was 19-5. five people voted to uphold dante’s exile.

The objectively funniest part of this is actually that the city that holds his remains, Ravenna, refused to give his remains back. This was a ploy from florence to have his remains moved back for the tourist money and its been ongoing for a long time. Florence had a fake tomb built in the city to trick people into visiting, and have tried to force the return of the remains.

His actual caretakers have been very steadfast in keeping them hidden, moved, or generally out of reach to respect his choice in life to never, ever, ever return to florence, even when he was first offered the chance to return. This is at this point an almost millenium long feud that florence is really, really mad about losing

Maeglin in Nan Elmoth. I decided that Nan Elmoth is so creepy to everybody cause its the same forest from hungarian folktales. I believe Nan Elmoth is made out of every rich metal/material and the "sun light" is just reflection, which is not as strong of light thus why Maeglins eyes hurt so much in Gondolin.

I might do a fanfic of this au, don't know yet tho
