Ms. Clark, I truly hate to bother you over summer break and I wouldn't if I truly didn't need your advice. If you could get my ph. number from school and give me a call I promise to make it brief. Thank You Professor Clark for a wonderful semester!! I believe between you and the other students in this class has truly made it a joy for me. Our fun disagreements, who would ever want to do without them. I have truly enjoyed this class, when I signed up I was so unsure, but you helped me make it through, and for that I will forever be grateful. It is you that kept us together, and I am sure that my classmates would feel the same. I hope you have a wonderful summer. Again thank you for the best semester!

Kelly I too ended up liking this class. I went in a bit wary, I just didn’t know what to expect with post modern writing. I found some to be completely nonsense but some really hit me hard. Books like The Things They Carried , ELIC, and The Road were all writings that had lessons to learn. I enjoyed some of the readings also and plan to find more of their works to read this summer. As for Ms. Clark I loved her last semester for 1102 and my feelings haven,t changed. I tell everyone who really wants to learn and do well in their writing to sigh up for her class. I think the discussions and differences we had are normal. I would not want to live in a world where everyone agreed with me, and besides, I love a good debate( could you tell?) Good luck everybody!
I agree Mrs. Clark is awesome and so is the class. I too have enjoyed all of the debates it would have been boring without them.
As I’ve read this book it does make me wonder if something like this could actually happen. With the technology available today it would only take one extreme personality to cause a worldwide catastrophe. Scary thought. Maybe this is why writers pen these types of novels, as a type of wake-up…
I was wondering the same exact question while reading this novel. It’s scary to think that one day everyone is going about their normal routines, and then the next day the world is destroyed. I believe something like this could actually happen, expecially with the events we have seen lately such as 9/11, the Boston Marathon Bombing, and threats against North Korea. There have been many movies/shows and books about the world ending like “Independence Day,” “2012,” “The Book of Eli,” “The Walking Dead,” and many more. Many people believe the world will end someday, but for now they are unsure of how it will happen.
I can honestly say I do not spend a lot of time thinking about the world coming to an end, but what I can say when I watch movies like the ones you discussed I do think to myself what if. I agree that with all the technology you would think it would take one heck of an extreme personality like you said, but at the same time we really do not know. So many bad things happen in the world we live in and then the media puts it on air and replays it over and over, so that people that may actually think that way as to destroy or do terrorist attacks can see where our weaknesses are and how the terrorists went through with bad things to hurt our world. I believe as society we deserve to know what is going on, but does the media really need to repeatably replay the bad acts over and over not to mention the families that are trying to heal have to continue to watch it on television over and over. This keeps it fresh in their minds and not the allotted time they need to begin to heal. It also gives too many people ideas of how to move forward with something they intend on doing to hurt our world and just maybe if they did not see it televised so much it might stop that one person from reacting to do harm. I would like to say though there are so many good things that happen daily in this world and that is what I like to focus on I just wish the media could show a little more love instead of the bad. Maybe one day it will get better, but for now we just have to set it to our own minds to know what is good verses evil.

Final Blog
I would like to say to all of my classmates that I have really enjoyed this class this semester. If it were not for all of you and Professor Clark I think that this class would not have been as much fun. Although I do enjoy reading, I truly believe this class made it so much more. I have really enjoyed the discussions we have had about the novels and short stories we read during this semester. I am not sure which one is my favorite, but what I can say is I did enjoy reading them. Sometimes our discussions in class got a little heated and there were some disagreements as we all know. But what I do believe is that we have all enjoyed this class. Feel free to disagree if you like..lol.. Each novel had a different meaning to me and for different reasons. Some of the novels like The Things They Carried, touched my heart and brought up some emotions about life and death. I guess in a different way The Road did the same, but at the same time it was completely different. With A Visit From The Goon Squad, I believe at first I was a little confused but ultimately ended up enjoying the reading. In Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, I think we all became attached to Oscar and his journey to find where the key belonged after his fathers death on 9/11. I know I did. This was the novel that really reminded me of loss in life. Anyhow I just wanted to say thank you to everyone and that I have truly enjoyed our discussions and this class, and I hope all of you did as well. Have a great and safe summer!

Well this is my second try to post this text. I gave this movie a ‘C’ . The actors were cast well although in my mind the boy was a bit younger. I thought too much artistic license was taken in the making of this movie. To me some major incidents were changed combined or completely eliminated...
Yeah I agree the movie to me was not near as good as the book. I did take notes today and I found a lot of differences; however, I did not count them yet and I still have to compare for Monday's portion of the movie. I was most disappointed in the end of the movie. I thought in my own mind that they would at least portray the end of the book the same in the movie. I understand that some stuff has to be compressed and changed, but they should have left that part alone. Due to the fact that it was a major part of the movie. But then again most everything that was different were key points in my mind. So like you I loved the book and wished I had not seen the movie, but it is good to compare sometimes. What I will do is remember the book more, because it was so much better to me. I am glad you have finally figured out tumblr. See you in class on Monday. Movie vs. Book
I sent an e-mail to the class through Angel about the differences between the movie and the novel. I only posted a few off the top of my head. I will think about some more and post them later. The Road, Movie
I was not sure what I would make of this book being turned into a movie. I know we have only watched part of it thus far, but I feel a stronger connection to the book than the movie so far. I did notice several differences in the movie from the book. Just to name a few the scene about the bunker is definitely different in a couple of ways. The boy goes to the bathroom before they eat in the book, but in the movie he does not. The father goes back to a shed or barn to get something to break the bunker open. I believe it was a shovel but in the movie he uses a big rock that was there. Also there is a piano the papa plays a few keys on in one of the houses the boy and him go into, which is not in the book. There are many differences another may be in the book I think they may stop and eat a little more often than what the movie portrayed. Also there is something different about the scene with the semi truck on the bridge I cannot exactly remember what. I think that the father takes the credit cards and picture out of his wallet and puts them on the road in the book, but in the movie he throws them over the bridge. I cannot say I remember the wedding ring.. I will have to go back and look at the book to see what has changed so far in comparison. Anyhow I am waiting to watch the rest of the movie on Wednesday to tell you how I really feel about the movie.

Movie vs. Book

POST 12
Since everybody was probably hit by the terrible thunderstorm we had tonight I figured I would try to incorporate this thunderstorm into the book we are reading now called The Road. While the storm was going on my dog seemed to be really scarred and was completely cuddled up against me making it seem as if I was its protection. While this was happening it made me think about the boy and the father. This made me think of how young the boy was and how scarred he must have been during this terrible part of his life. The boy only has his father and sees his father as protection, kind of like my dog saw me as protection during the storm. Overall I felt as if my dog was acted like the boy portrayed in the story because they were both scared and seeked protection.
Cute Puppy. I am sure that your puppy was happy to have you protecting him during the thunderstorms. You are right, it worked incorporating your puppy into the reading. It fits with the storyline.

I would like to say I agree the novel has been very different from most everything I have read in the past. I also think the novel has been very interesting to read as well. In the beginning I was unsure and thought it dragged out a little to much. However, when I sat down and just started reading it I found I became very attached to the father and son. You are correct about feeling the compassion for the two of them hoping that they find some form of hope when they reach the coast. Although, it ends with the father dying so not much hope there. But the son is all the much wiser due to the love and bond his father has taught him. The little boy to me really shows he cares for people and sometimes in life that is all one needs.

The Road
In The Road, by McCarthy we read about a little boy and his father who are traveling the roads headed to the South. It appears that they are living in some form of post apocalyptic time in America. While reading the novel we are not sure what kind of tragedy has occurred. We only know that the father is really caring for his son's concerns. The little boy always wants to help other people especially since they do not run into very many people. It seems as if the father knows what the son is going to say before he says it. This only shows he really knows his son. It is kind of weird that the little boy always seems to have a sick sense when there is trouble. He tells his father many times they should not do certain things like going into the house where there were people that were being held captive just awaiting the time to be eaten. The little boy feels the horror when it is near, but yet he wants to trust most of the living people that are still standing. He tells his dad repeatably "I'm scared," the dad says I know. Ultimately the two definitely show their love for one another. In the beginning of this novel I was unsure of my thoughts about it, and now I feel the connection that the two main characters have made me feel. The boy and his father draw me in and make me want to continue reading. I think the key to reading this book is to get past the first 40 pages and then not to put it down until you are finished reading it so that your connection remains strong with the characters in the novel. If you can do this it makes the novel a lot stronger. At points yes it feels continuous, but putting that aside if you read it in one or close to one sitting it draws you in.

I agree that the story takes place in the future from where all the other stories in the book are at. And yes it appears to be from Alex's point of view. I like the fact that Bennie in this later date is finally promoting a concert for Scotty. When reading the other chapter earlier on that had Bennie and Scotty in it, I thought that would be the last of what we would hear from the two of them. It just goes to show while reading a book you never know what to expect. Finally Scotty is having his own concert, and surprisingly enough it is Bennie who promotes it. Also I liked what you said about the future generation of what the past used to be.

Pure Language
This particular chapter was all in all pretty good. The part I particularly liked was that Lulu was the only one able to calm Scotty before the concert. Bennie and Alex were unable to get Scotty where he needed to be. The crowd was getting a little wild awaiting him. For some reason when he saw Lulu and she said "I'm Lulu," and then a few seconds later she asked Scotty, "Can I walk with you?" Scotty was able to put his fears and emotions in check and he says to Lulu "Only if you'll take my arm, darling." During this time in this chapter it also reads "and the young woman who might have been his daughter." Who knows maybe she was. Lulu never knew her father and the only thing known was that he used to be famous. Maybe this feeling that Scotty has looking at her is a closeness that they did not understand. Maybe Lulu was in fact his daughter and somewhere inside maybe he felt something towards her that was similar to a daughter/ father relationship, and her pure innocence of looking down at her just made him want to be calm and go with her not even knowing why.

I am not sure how I feel about this chapter, In the beginning it seems to be a bunch of teenage kids dealing with the things teenagers deal with; however, I did not think young teenagers had to deal with things such as quaaludes. Maybe I do not understand the hippie error. The part of this…
You know, I’ve been reading some articles about Quaaludes, and most of them say that they were used recreationally in America during the late 60’s and early 70’s, which would be close to the time for chapter 3. I think that it is more regulated now.
I would like to say that I understand what you mean about the uncomfortable image in this chapter because what Lou does is totally inappropriate, immoral, and disgusting in my opinion. I do however disagree with you on one thing. I do not think that what Lou or Jocelyn do is concurrent with any single generation, even Jocelyn or Rhea’s generation which would be the 70’s and 80’s generation. I mean, if we look back through time, we could find all kinds of evil things that people have done. (This may sound stupid but my feeling is that to assume that today’s generation is bad [lazy or immoral] is to assume that the past generation is any better, and, I’m sorry, but I read my history textbook and I do not believe for one moment that any generation is “better” than another. I feel that we are all screwed up.)
I do agree that Lou is a sleazebag and I don’t feel that sorry for him later in chapter 5. I would pay money to watch you kick his ass! ;-) I saw an article on CNN about a former Italian Prime Minister who not only has been involved in his fair share of sex scandals, but also plans to marry a woman 49 years younger than him.
I finished the book, and, I have to say that I really enjoyed it. I felt that by the end many (not all) of the characters are redeemed and that the book ends on a positive note, so I hope that you grow to like the book.
Hey I do not think our generation is any better, I am just saying that that is not the way I lived. I definitely get what you are saying though our generation is just as screwed up if not worse. I just did not live that way, nor have I raised my son in those regards, but hey ya never know. I do enjoy the book, I just do not care for that particular chapter, and how Lou is portrayed, to me it is disgusting. But overall I have enjoyed reading the book.
I am finding A Visit from the Goon Squad to be a very difficult read. The way that the book is set up jumping around the way it does and the weird story line makes it near about impossible for me to enjoy the book. What I think my ultimate issue is is the sex, drugs, stealing, violence, and...
I completely understand where you are coming from and agree with most of what you are saying. The parts I find my self troubled over are the sex, drugs, and I guess one could say the rock n roll life style. Some of the stories I start to understand and then they end, so for that reason it does jump around a lot, and therefore makes the stories difficult to understand. There have been a couple of the chapters this far where I would have liked to know what happens in the end, but they are just not there for us to read. I do have to say chapter three I really had a hard time with. The sex between a young girl and a much older man just surprised me. I guess in that sense even though I am older I feel sheltered as well, and I still find it disgusting. We hear about this kind of stuff on television, at least parts about older women with younger men and older men with younger women, but I do not believe we hear about young teenagers doing this sort of thing, or maybe I just do not watch that kind of stuff, and I definitely do not read about it until now while reading this book. Any way I see your point I was sheltered as a child, so I understand. I also shelter my own son from this type of stuff, we do discuss sex, drugs, and many other things I just pray that what I have done is raise him properly and he chooses all the right paths as he has done thus far. Hopefully he continues to stay on the right track. As a parent one can only hope we have done the right things for our children and they end up safe, happy, and successful, and not perverts like Lou...
