The sudden sensation over his shoulder made him stiffen a little, but Goro relaxed once he saw that she didn’t seem to mean any aggression. She also seemed somebody reliable and capable of combat, and with that her intentions weren’t too hard to decipher.
“O-Oh! …Handsome?” Goro tried – and ultimately failed – not to sound a bit too flustered. It probably didn’t mean anything, but the compliment still took him off guard. As a celebrity such notions were given out to him like free candy. This status wasn’t something that came along with him in this city though, and that meant such words here wouldn’t be said in order to suck up to him.
He coughed. Now was not the time for this.
“Were you planning to find your way in, as well? It might be wise for us to cooperate. We can split the fragments between us.” A shame he wouldn’t be able to obtain the full amount, but half is better than nothing. Safety was important, too. It would be a shame to plunge straight towards injury or death just because he was being too greedy.
“I’ll make sure not to become too much of a burden.”
His reaction was contained, but still more honest than she had expected from someone who had such a serious look on her face only moments before her little intrusion. Luckily though, it seemed the boy was quick enough on the upkeep for her to speak frankly.
“I had definitely considered it to be a challenge course, however an extra set of hands could lower the set difficulty just enough for us to both have a little fun.”
“Feel free to call me Max, handsome. I’d suggest we move quickly though before the unsuspecting citizens get ever more rowdy.”
She pulled a single stone from her pocket with a small sigil inscribed on it and moved closer to the ledge. A quick flick of the wrist sent the stone plummeting to the mob of infected below. She doubted that any of them noticed the small thing in their frenzy, so the small explosion triggered by a tap at the hilt of her sword likely came as quite a shock to them.
“Shall we?”
arquemie:
He doesn’t take kindly to her mocking but his pointed looks hold steadfast. He’s irked, yes, but he’s not about to fly off the handle over a few cheeky quips. Not when her introduction reveals so much.
“Not particularly.” Still, he can’t help but be obstinate. Coy banter will earn neither points nor trust from him. Allen’s tried that before and rescuing Julian from near-death worked out much better for both parties. “I’d much rather waste my breath shouting ‘Maximillia Penelope Augusta Eustald’ in its entirety. With any luck, we’ll both be dead before I get the chance to warn you of our impending doom.”
But considering she’s shown her hand, he releases a sigh and fans out his own against the table: “Julian Albert Desmond. We’re practically twinsies, Max.” He hates himself a little, for saying it like that, but she started it!
She had to admire the fact that he hadn’t completely lost his composure by now. It almost made her want to try harder to prod at him to see if his mask would crumble entirely, but he was such a good sport that she had no choice but to concede.
“Oh! Julian is a rather smart name. It reminds me of my sister.”
“With any luck you’ll turn out to be nothing like her.”
Max walked just a few steps past Julian with her eyes seemingly fixed on something farther ahead. She raised a gloved hand with the other fixed on her hip and spread a grin on her face that was nothing short of a sneer.
“Tell me, twinsie.” She started. “In the place you called home before you were pulled here, did they have anything in the way of ‘magic’ to your knowledge?”

“Uh? No, no, ma’am. I’m just the guard taking care of the cells here.” The man replies in a rather embarrassed tone. He’s indeed the only guard taking care of the cells today, as most of the remaining police force in the city has been mobilized to take care of the infection problem. It’s unlikely that they’ll have good results, however. As time passes, the situation worsens to a collapsing degree.
“Y-Your attorney is waiting on the glass room, I’ve come to take you to him, as our protocol dictates.” Holding a bundle of keys, the guard opens Max’s cells while keeping her handcuffed. Without more people to help him, he can’t risk her going around destroying things (even if, in truth, they turn out to be useless to stop the mage).
Just as the guard mentioned, Phoenix is waiting for Max’s arrival in front of the familiar looking glass panel through which he’s spoken to several clients in the past. Sure, it’s not this specific glass panel, but you get the comparison. There doesn’t seem to have anyone else interested in talking to prisoners at the detention center today, which means that he’s currently waiting in loneliness.
(Are there even other prisoners besides Miss Eustald currently at this place? It feels so… empty.) Wouldn’t surprise him if that’s the case. Most people who’d at this moment qualify as criminals are probably the infectees, who must be too aggressive to be kept in common prisons like this.
“Well aren’t you a character.”
Max laughed quietly to herself at the sight of the young attorney. His physical features or appearance had little to do with her continued amusement at her situation, but his presence there was more than enough to get a chuckle or two out of her. The fact that she seemed to be undergoing due process was one thing, but this gentlemen added another layer entirely.
She sat down on the other side of the panel without resistance, still mindful of her restraints and how little use they’d ultimately end up being. The young man seemed to be a professional, which made it all the sillier that he’d end up tangled in something like this. Max almost felt sorry for him for having such a rotten stroke of luck.
Almost.
“Hello there, dear. I’m assuming you have your fair share of questions and terms, and your most certainly free to ask while I’m still on my best behavior.”
“All on the condition that I get to learn why a Servant is planning on representing me in a court of law, of course.”
Headcanon: Magic
This is a fun one. The flow of magic has always been something that’s come easily to her. That said, she’s always been more on the impulsive side, so being born into a family and society that considers magic to be an art, she needed a lot of coaching to learn to use it with some delicacy. Max could produce all sorts of results from a young age, but most fell in the category of ‘explosive’.
She’s still a magus, so to her magic is another part of her life, but she’s hardly picky on how she does things as long as it gets her results. She can worry about being tasteful and elegant when she’s trying to show off, which is half the time anyway. Through several years of rigorous study and several....stern lectures, her use on it has been refined from something less like dynamite and more like C4. still bombs but yeah

46: have you ever felt like you weren’t good enough?
“Who shall inherit the seat? Who will surpass that devil-woman? What sort of beast could possibly succeed the Spectre?”
“Of course, my darling sister told me time and again that I have no need to feel inferior to her given our positions...”
“But the constant whispering never truly seemed to quiet down, and it was rather hard to ignore for long...”

12: is there something you would like to say to someone?
“Aha sis...! The sword? Naturally I have it for training purposes! Training!”
“I promise it’s in good hands, B. I’d never do something reckless with one of your prized possessions...though I suppose I should have told you I was borrowing it.”
24: you receive £60 without any reason, what do you spend it on?
“Limits my options a bit, but I’m actually quite creative when I put my mind to it.”
“What would you do? Dinner sounds lovely right about now, and I imagine this could disappear rather quickly between the two of us.”

18: ever liked someone you thought you didn’t stand a chance with?
“Well, that’s quite the maidenly question. I suppose certain expectations can do damage to romance even in the smallest sense.”
“I prefer to be a bit more pragmatic. All the time spent placing someone on a pedestal could easily be spent on careless small talk, you know?”
21: have you ever wasted your time on someone?
“Targets, marks, recommended assignments...”
“You can’t even call it practice if it hardly poses a challenge...”
34: are you a patient person?
“Oh but of course..!”
Not.

The crease of his brows deepens.
Sensible as she thinks she may be, he’s not looking to join in any mind games. The fact that she presents it to him with a neat little ribbon does nothing to endear her to him. Had she been straight with him, had she simply stated her terms, he might have lowered his guard. But no, she’s masking her every step.
“An ally,” he echoes, incredulous in tone and expression. “I could use more of those, couldn’t I? And what exactly do I call my new ally?”
It’s unfair of him to expect her name before he gives his own, he’s aware, but it’s one of the safest olive branches anyone could yield. If she can’t give him even that, then they can run circles around each other like dazed ants.
“Now there’s the sound of pragmatic thinking. Always music to the ears.”
Despite her own hums, she never expected the man to dance to her tune just because she whistled around him. He seemed the professional sort, and the smallest bit irritated by how lightly she was taking him. It made her want to play around more, but she’d answer pragmatism with pragmatism.
“Maximillia Penelope Augusta Eustald. The last name means very little to you here, and those two in the middle mean nothing in casual conversation.”
“For simplicity’s sake and to sound the slightest bit friendlier, you can call me Max. Something like that almost makes it sound like we’re friends, don’t you think?”
arquemie:
Fumbling things is a sign of exhaustion, not clumsiness. Or at least, that’s what he’d argue if ever asked at gunpoint. But that’s neither here nor there. He chases after the tumbling device, praying for it not to meet an untimely demise beneath one’s boot or a passing vehicle. Lady Luck must fancy him for she’s nothing short of a tease: He follows the motion of the hand that retrieves his Triplicata off the ground.
Well, she’s a lovely thing. That’s what his mum would say.
He’s working at a response when she tosses his Triplicata at him. Thankfully, his grip is much more reliable this time, even if he has to resort to cradling the device against his chest. Julian huffs.
“Is this the part where I thank you?” he asks, curt with distrust.
“That’s all up to you.”
A shrug of the shoulders was all she’d offer along with her words. It was clear with both her words and mannerisms that she was giving the man an opportunity. For what, he’d certainly figure out one way or the other.
“Look at it in gains and losses. What do you stand to lose by thanking me? Moreover, what do you stand to gain?”
“A friend? An ally? Merely a conversation partner? Personally I’d opt for the slight endearment of a darling young lass while she’s still pretending to be a generous sort.”
Of course she’s speaking entirely objectively. Nothing but cold facts and numbers. Gains and losses.
✌
Karna presents a very interesting opportunity for Max as a person with a rather warped sense of self. She could present him with any one of her masks or facades and he’d likely see her as empty. She’d likely remind him of a certain someone else as someone who’s a slave to the expectations of her family even if she’s much less torn by it. She’d do her best to keep up her jovial and amiable face in casual conversations but she’d be wholly unnerved by how easy he can see through her.
They definitely wouldn’t get off on the wrong foot though since she can respect someone who lived trying to do right by their family, or at least what family they had.
✌
Terribly. Absolutely terribly, and it’d be all her fault. She’d do everything she could to push his buttons it’s what she does when she sees a grump up until she learns why he’s so sour, and even then she’d be hard pressed to take any of his bitterness personally. She’d think he’s too cute to be anything other than a softie underneath it all and she’d definitely challenge him to prove her wrong for better or worse.
✌
God she’d remind her of teacher and “mother” who was also loud and quite the heavy drinker despite being a magus and thief. Honest and straightforward people are oddly refreshing to Max who’s constantly surrounded by duplicitous types. Though she’d definitely keep her wits about her, even if the urge to start a fight in the name of good fun would be hard for her to fight off.
@arquemie
“Rather unfortunate time for butterfingers, don’t you think dear?”
She toyed with the blue cube in her hand for a moment with careful fingers, toying just as much with the idea of dropping it. It was the last thing she expected to find on her hunt for fragments, but strange times always have a habit of bringing out the carelessness in others. She wouldn’t fault him for neglecting to notice one small thing in the midst of all the madness, but she certainly would have her fun.
“I suppose you’d need this more than me if things got hairy soon.”
“Or do you fancy yourself a quick thinker?”
A flick of the wrist, and the cube was tossed gently in his direction despite her jokes.

It all began at 8:40 AM on a Monday, when Phoenix was going down the stairs to have breakfast. After so many agitated days collecting Fragments non stop, he’d rather rest and recharge his energies by just being lazy and watching some TV, maybe playing a couple Triplicata games too. Noctis had prepared the coffee earlier, which he took some of and drank while holding the remote control.
The news were showcasing the usual affairs of the virus epidemic. The number of infected was already being estimated at 5 million by the authorities, a crisis like never seen before in Utopia. It’s of course an upsetting outcome, but Phoenix can’t avoid wondering why the reporter speaks as if this place has existed for far longer than just a couple weeks. Could it simply be NPC programming?
In any case, this whole thing was highly depressing, so Phoenix was about to change channels when, all of a sudden, they began telling a story about a tragedy, yet mysterious case. Yesterday, at 4:28 PM, three people were killed in a shopping explosion. The event also hurt 13 people, 2 of them severely wounded. The peculiar thing was that no trait of a bomb device was found by the police, but they found a curious drawing on the floor, leading them to believe it was an improper use of magic.
The thing that caught Phoenix’s attention the most, however… was that they had already arresed a suspect. Max Eustald, a young woman identified as a Master thanks to a characteristic tattoo. A witness claims to have spotted her close to the crime scene minutes before the incident.
This, of course, smelled wrong for Phoenix. How can the police determine a suspect that quickly? With an agency or not, his pride as a defense attorney calls him to duty. He leaves a note to Noctis and teleports to the Business District, where he knows the police and detention center are.
A strange turn of events on what was easily the longest day she’s had in the city led her to a jail cell. The situation was as surprising as it was amusing to her, so she had no qualms submitting to the justice system imposed in the city. She behaved and remained in her cell despite her apparent displeasure at having her precious weapons confiscated.
Still she was quieter than normal. A silence that only came to those privileged with connections. In the past, if events ever conspired to see her imprisoned, she needed only to wait for her doting and impossibly powerful older sister to pull the necessary strings. However, with Beatrice nowhere to be seen, her silent confidence was almost unfounded. But curiosity was a dangerous thing.
There was a game afoot, and the only reason she had yet to destroy the cell she found herself in was because she was dying to see how it would play out. So she waited patiently until a young man strode through the doors leading to her cell. A cordial wave of her fingers beneath handcuffs was her first instinct.
“Good morning, love.”
“Are you my lawyer? I certainly hope you’re good at what you do. This would be painfully boring otherwise.”
