“Planned Parenthood overwhelmed me with the ability to make my own choices, without having to ask my Congressman 😱”
An abstinence-focused sex education class in East Lansing, Michigan recently received a shock when one student’s sex-positive mother sat in on the proceedings — and hilariously live-tweeted them.
Alice Dreger, a professor of medical humanities and bioethics at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, was invited by her son to join his abstinence-only sex education class, to see, in her words, “how bad it is.”
Dreger has a fair amount of experience in the sexuality arena — she’s written prominently about the value of pleasure, given a TED talk on the power of anatomy and regularly tweets about the importance of sex positivity — so she knows what she’s talking about when it comes to sex.
Unfortunately for her son’s sex education instructor, this meant that the class was ripe for public shaming.

What triggers my anger is when that person who happens to be a female says: “I don’t need feminism. I don’t need to be liberated.”
How about you tell that to:
that Moroccan girl who killed herself after being forcibly married to her rapist (x)
that 11-year-old Texan girl who got raped by 18 men while the New York Times said she “dressed older than her age.” (x)
Reyhaneh Jabari, an Iranian woman who was tortured in jail then hanged after killing the man who was going to rape her. (x)
Nojood Al-Ali from Yemen who got divorced when she was 10. (x)
the 16-year-old girl from Ohio who got raped and filmed at a party by 2 boys, while CNN reporters talked about the bright futures of the rapists as athletes. (x)
the 94 women in Jordan who were legally married to their rapists, only in 2014. (x)
the 8-year-old girl who was married to a man 5 times her age, and died on the day of her wedding because she suffered from bleeding and uterine rupture after intercourse. (x)
the 25 Palestinian women who were killed by either their brother or father, in order to “protect their honor” only in 2013. (x)
the 99% of Egyptian women and 90% of Yemeni women who have experienced sexual harassment (x) (x)
You still don’t need feminism?
Pro-Abstinence Sex Ed
A male presenter came up and started talking about how virginity was a beautiful gift and should be treasured. He showed a rose to the class and asked who wanted the flower. Everyone raised their hands. He plucked a petal off and asked how many people would still want the flower. Most people raised their hands. He asked someone to pull a petal off and repeated the question. This continued until the flower was bare. He said “Don’t you see that the flower isn’t as valuable because it’s been touched by so many people? How many of you would still want the flower?”
One guy raised his hand up and shouted out:
“I would. It doesn’t matter who touched the flower before I did. If you think that, you are a moron. And your metaphor is sexist.”
To this day, I don’t know who that guy was, but he’s still my hero.
I like this story. I like it a lot.
And remember: you are a human being, not a flower or a piece of tape or any of the bullshit they use for these demonstrations. Being touched by other people doesn’t make you worthless. Having sex doesn’t make you unworthy of love. Being a virgin is not your lone function in this world. There is nothing, NOTHING wrong with abstinence or celibacy, but you shouldn’t be shamed into doing it.

I think men overall just don’t understand that we cannot stop the blood. If there’s nothing to collect it, it’s going everywhere. Everyone can hold a shit, can hold a piss, and can hold back sex, until it’s convenient. When we bleed there is just no stopping it. It doesn’t matter if there’s nothing to catch the blood, it will keep coming.
That’s why this free-tampon discussion is over your heads. You don’t get it. You can compare it to toilet paper or condoms all you want but we all have control over those things. When we bleed, we keep bleeding until it’s done. There’s no clenching or muscle training that will keep us from bleeding everywhere.
So stop talking about what you don’t understand. If condoms can be free, so can tampons.
Also, toilet paper is free in public restrooms. Everyone would lose their shit if they had to buy toilet paper at work.
