Greetings from Motel 6, Atascadero.
So, as can be expected when typing on a mobile device, I wrote up a real detailed entry up until the show last night but it got erased when I pulled it up to resume typing. Suppose it wasn't meant to be! I am writing to you from a bed of mediocre comfort at a Motel 6 in the Paso Robles area. Wine country! This place has a special place in my heart because 1) I love wine, duh and 2) it was the first stop on my first ever solo road trip, the one that changed my life, and also the one of which is the subject of my first novel-in-progress. We didn't get to enjoy the scenery though as we came as fast as we could in the night (which is not very fast when you're pulling a trailer) with the sole purpose of sleeping. If you recall, I had said we had free places to stay at every stop, which is true, but I made an executive decision to not plague ourselves with fiery cabin fever by making the drive from Long Beach to Humboldt County in one day, and play a show that night. 12 hours is past that insanity point. 8, much more manageable. Everything has been excellent so far! Beyond excellent! We picked up Steve from LAX on Monday and went to Westwood to hang out with Joseph Lorge, formerly of The Wrong Trousers (my old band) who graciously hosted us for two days. Highlights/salient memories from that evening and next day include: Stumbling into a Salvi harp showroom by a stroke of fate, only to have the rep offer to LEND me a 30,000 electro-acoustic harp for the 2nd LA show. No big deal. Having to go in shifts to feed the meter(s) every two hours, at which our SUV and trailer stayed stagnantly parked until we had to go to the show. Hanging out in Joseph's apartment with his girlfriend, her roommate and her boyfriend, waiting until past midnight for a pizza that no one really wanted when it came but we ate anyway. ... Originally, Joseph couldn't make it to the show because he had Bluegrass rehearsal across the street (aka at UCLA, where he is an Ethnomusicology major, fancy schmancy!) and Wyatt (who played much of the session work you hear on my record) for the same reason. This was a bummer, but nothing anyone could do... Or was there? On our way out, Joseph said, maybe even jokingly, too bad we can't just open for you and we all said, "DO IT!" and so texts were sent, and in this crazy tech-speedy world we live in, we had an answer ASAP - The LA Bluegrass Hoppers were going to start the show, which meant Joe, Wyatt AND his girlfriend Nicolette (she's in the ensemble too) could come! It was perfect! And it was. The venue was wonderful, my favorite cozy kind of dive bar, with a pretty legit sound set-up for the size. The bluegrass band was AWESOME of course, and then it was time for our first set of the tour, which went great! We're still getting used to playing with no guitar, but everyone seemed to dig it. We packed up, got some food and played a few heated rounds of the board game Sequence with our new friends Jessica and Chris before once again invading their brand new comfy futon (thanks guys!!). More tomorrow on today in Long Beach, I'm typing in bed right now (it's 2:53 am) and I'm pretty sure Steve is getting annoyed with me, haha. I need to sleep anyway, I have two phone interviews for articles tomorrow, one for the Daily Bruin at UCLA and one for The SD Reader, and the first one is at 9am. Who needs sleep anyway?!
