itsangass:
For someone afraid of fire, Angus thought it strange how quick she was to take his offer up. He figured it was blind enthusiasm she’d adopted to cope, but it still baffled him. Kendall was hard to keep up with in new and different way than the people he had already managed to convince about him being somewhat decent to be around. He didn’t have the time to analyse intentions because it had changed by the time he started. “We’re not aiming at it?” He asked, stepping past her and squatting down to do his best mimic of the setup he’d seen before. “If you want to…” Angus quickly trailed off, second guessing the slightly morbid humor he found in the idea out of anger as something that probably would’ve been found funnier by other company. “Joking. Come light the fuse.”
“Oh--” Kendall let out a nervous laugh, shaking her head. “No, no, no. I don’t really want to blow up our ride, or our friends. I mean-- I’m not really sure they’re actually my friends, but either way, they’re humans that I don’t really feel like going to jail for.” She hesitated for a second, the reality of the situation setting in again, but she couldn’t back down now. Kendall gingerly walked towards the firework, afraid that any jostling of a leaf around it could mess it up, finally squatting down to inspect her job. She slipped the lighter from his hand, gave him a look that said ‘here goes nothing’ and flicked it a couple of times before she got it to hold the flame, then set the fuse ablaze. She let out a yelp as she rushed to stand and run back. “Come on, come on! Are we far enough away?”
itsangass:
Kendall’s rebuttal of his point panged in his chest and forced a raised brow from Angus. It wasn’t because she’d questioned him, it was that she was right. To him, things like that which felt like a challenge, but what was there to argue against in her point? He reminded himself that now wasn’t the time again. His gaze moved between the firework in his hand and Kendall while he rolled his lighter between his fingers. “Face it then,” Angus held the lighter back out to her, swallowing back questions about what she meant and just running with a safer thought, “If I set this up and you light it, that counts, no? The fire and everything.” It felt like facing a fear of his own even offering to let some kind of the control to her. The option was there for him to direct her and the situation in a way that he would’ve liked, but he didn’t want to do that nor did he know if he could. People like her weren’t exactly ones he’d taken the time to understand before.
Kendall’s entire face lit up at his suggestion as she grabbed the lighter back from him. That seemed like a good trade-off. What could possibly go wrong? She just needed to do one little thing, and that would be enough to cross it off her list. “That totally counts,” she said, potentially a little too upbeat for someone who was about to be trusted with handling flammables, but she couldn’t contain herself. For some reason, this felt like exactly what she needed. “Besides, what’s the worst that could happen? We aim it wrong and the RV goes boom? We’ll live, right?”
itsangass:
Angus found himself in a predicament. Anger lurking beneath the surface and somehow wondering how his reaction would be perceived. He was sure the last thing someone thought of when they saw him was comfort, that wasn’t an accident. Rarely would he do something unintentionally. He’d ended up here somehow when earlier there’d been a clear image of his night, then later a clearer image of a more abrupt end to the arguing that involved his fist in an action worlds away from wrapped around Kendalls. It made him uneasy - She made him uneasy, but his responses didn’t stray from the outward image he’d built for himself. “Another choice is you do it. Risk it,” He explained, just for clarity’s sake, quickly backtracking to make sure she didn’t think he was advocating it. “Logic doesn’t scream that right now is the best time for facing fears, so maybe it’s best that–” Angus trailed off and dropped her hand to pull one of the sticks from Wes’s stash from his jacket. Continuing after clearing his throat and holding out an open palm again while he let his eyes fall on her, “Lighter.”
“I should probably see how it’s done first,” Kendall said with a giggle, taking his challenge as almost a friendly flirt. He held out his hand again and she looked at it, wondering if he wanted to hold her hand again after just dropping it moments before, but before she could act, he specified what he was looking for, and she delivered with a whispered ‘oh’. “There’s no good time to face a fear, right? I mean, why not tonight? Maybe it would lighten up my memory of this day.”
itsangass:
A hand taking his was entirely unexpected. Angus had to quickly consider that now was not the time to make Kendall feel worse by pulling away, even if holding hands wasn’t something he was prepared for or something he thought was hardcore. If wasn’t the first time he’d been caught off guard by her, but he did his best not to make the surprise obvious. She’d been through enough tonight, he figured. It wasn’t even that bad, being honest with himself. “Um, yeah,” Angus replied with no real expression as he turned on his heels and started towards the clearing they’d set up at before. “It’s easy stuff, really,” He assured her, really having no clue about setting them up, “Don’t worry about fire. We’ll be good.”
“I trust you,” Kendall shrugged a shoulder and let out a chuckle. She eyed the open space, trying not to think about how she’d been sitting on Sam’s lap the last time they’d been around here with fireworks. Things had been so nice and perfect hours ago, and now it just seemed like a dream. She glanced at Angus, trying to find footing back in her new reality. It wasn’t so bad, anyway. “What other choice do I have, right?”
itsangass:
Kendall was gone faster than he could give her any more instruction, her energy leaving him always a little more on his toes than he was comfortable with. Angus took a second to blink and let his mind catch up before he entered the RV. Face expressionless as he ignored the eavesdropping he would’ve enjoyed at another time to focus on locating Wes’s stash, bending down to retrieve the leftover fireworks and shove the into the interior pocket of his jacket before anyone could say anything. Leaving just as quickly as he entered to the sight of the blonde dashing back towards him. His brow furrowed in the centre, taking a quick glance down at his hand which held the sticks steady under the black fabric. “Big hands? Okay,” What came next was either a laugh or a scoff, even Angus couldn’t tell. “Let’s just–” he moved on with a gesture of his head away from the RV and offering his free hand out towards her with a flattened palm.
“After you,” she started, eyes trailing down to his outstretched hand. Without thinking, she grinned and grabbed his hand with hers. She didn’t interlock their fingers (though she considered it for half a second), she had just had her heart broken, for shit’s sake, but she was happy that he had made any move and didn’t want to shoot him down just yet. “I hope this stuff works. You know how to set it up, right? Because I totally don’t. Fire honestly scares me a little bit.”
samwoodrow:
“God no. If you’re using the dog filter post past 2016, someone needs to delete Snapchat for you.” She swiped through her phone a few times until she found the selfie she was talking about, and handed it over to Kendall. “See, it’s just the golden butterfly filter. I posted it to Instagram, and my brother tried to call me out for being basic.” She took the phone back, scrolled down a bit until she found her brother’s comment, and handed it back. “In the comments! Can you believe?”
Kendall let out a laugh, making a mental note to delete the dog filter selfies she’d taken a few days ago so she wouldn’t be tempted to post them later. “Um, this is so cute. Basic or not, you’re killing it. I don’t think it counts when you’re killing it.” She grabbed the phone from Sam and read through the rest of the comments, rolling her eyes. “You just have to delete his comment, he’s clearly just mad you got the better genes,” she shrugged, hoping she wouldn’t remember when Kendall had asked if he was single like, less than an hour ago. “Poor guy.”
samwoodrow:
“Okay, I need your opinion.” Sam took a final sip of her drink and set it down, reaching for her phone. It had a case that was completely over the top, bejeweled in pink plastic ribbons and large, fake pearls. As a girl that was practically glued to her phone, it made sense that it was just as ridiculous as she was. “Snapchat filter selfies – tacky or still cute?”
“Depends on which one,” Kendall said after a moment, pursing her lips around the green straw of her usual Venti Pink Drink, though she’d finished it a few minutes ago. The aesthetic of using a straw could last ages. “Like, some of them make you look so ugly now. I don’t understand the marketing behind that. And like, dog? Totally overused. But some are still totally story-worthy. Why? Did someone come at you for using ‘em? Oh my god, I’d be so mad.”
itsangass:
Firm grip on the handle to RV, which he thought would’ve fallen off by now with the way everyone seemed to slam through it considering the singular screw holding it in place, Angus kept his voice down to keep from rousing any attention from inside. It wouldn’t be strange for Angus to walk in and walk out without a word or glance given to anyone, it happened more often than he cared to admit. Not that he ever cared to admit much. Just as he wouldn’t admit how easy it was to see through the eagerness. Angus kept restraining himself from speaking words of his finest wisdom when that wasn’t what she needed. Putting more than his two cents in was a habit he didn’t want to break, but it wasn’t the time, so his voice returned to a cautious monotone rather than the sympathetic one he’d been offering her. “I think you should go get it. It’s, uh–” He furrowed his brow, struggling with giving away that secret to anyone, “It’s down the side of the drivers seat. At least your hands are small, it’s easier that me getting it. Keep that between us. It’s the biggest secret I have. Go, it’s unlocked.”
“Gotcha,” Kendall said as casually as possible, sending a (strained) smile his way before spinning off towards his car. She nearly ran, head down in case someone was waiting in an unchecked corner for their chance at taking a shot, until she got to her destination. She quickly pulled the door open, eyes wild, brain completely focused on the task. She would find this lighter if it killed her, and nothing else. Her eyes locked on a pastel pink one resting amidst the wreckage of trash and other less interesting colored lighters, and she snatched it up without a second thought, slamming the door and actually running back, holding it up triumphantly. “Your big hands would never have been able to grab this gem.”
itsangass:
Angus swayed back on his heels, arms folded across his torso as he started the slow but long strides towards the RV after Kendall took towards it like a whirlwind. Picking up his pace when she started talking so he could keep up and sparing a moment to tug the tear soaked patch on his shirt away from his skin. She seemed hyperfocused, which gave him the impression that this idea of hers was at least helping her cope for now. “From what I’ve gathered, he’s not someone who’d really think that through,” Angus offered his opinion, leaning down to snatch up a beer from the cooler as he passed. “Do you want me to grab them then or-?” He offered, trying to offer her an out of interacting with anyone inside, “My lighter’s in my car. If I leave those things out, they vanish around these people.”
This was good. This was helpful. Making Angus smile-- or, rather, do anything aside from the permanent scowl etched into his features had just become her number one goal, and certainly her number one coping mechanism. She was 0.2 seconds from opening the door before she jerked her hand down, remembering that a good chunk of the people who’d just kicked her heart around like a soccer ball were on half-time in there, rehydrating and strategizing how to kick it into the fading fire and winning once and for all. Angus’ offer was a godsend, and she nodded once, small and quick. “Yeah, yeah, I should probably....be on lookout,” she said, a bit too brightly. She had just sobbed into his shirt, so faking happy was pretty useless at this point, but she didn’t want to be a Beth. “Or, uh, I could go get your lighter? If you tell me where it is, I promise I won’t let it spill. I’d hate for you to lose any of your babies.”
