1. Take a clipboard to school. You have to be prepared to do homework ANYWHERE at ANYTIME. Carry it in your hand with some paper and your homework clipped onto it and get work done whenever you can. Don’t keep the clipboard in your bag.
2. USE YOUR PLANNER EVERY DAY. Keeping track of assignments and important dates helps clear your mind. You don’t have to worry about remembering everything because all of it is written down. If you have a lot going on at once, start a bullet journal. If you can, divide your planner into sections based on different activities. For example, my bullet journal has 4 major sections: school work, extracurricular activities, community service, and general life issues. This creates order in the midst of chaos and also enforces the idea of taking everything one at a time. Your planner shouldn’t overwhelm you.
3. Get the biggest calendar you can find and hang it on the wall. The purpose of the calendar is to allow you to establish a general time frame for everything you need to do. PLAN AHEAD. Make sure EVERYTHING is on that calendar. Being overwhelmed by your planner is bad because it leads to a stressful day; your calendar takes on the role of allowing you to see the big picture. Having everything written down on a calendar creates a sense of urgency that’ll decrease the likelihood or duration of procrastination.
4. If you’re taking multiple AP classes, dedicate at least one day of the week to each subject. I had 7 AP’s so I studied a different subject each day. For example, every Monday was Macroeconomics day. I took my econ review book to school on Mondays and studied whenever I had some extra time. Start doing this 3 or 4 months before the exams in May to avoid cramming and excessive stress.
5. Sleep whenever you can but avoid sleeping on the way home from school. If you enter your home feeling sleepy the bed is going to be extra enticing.
6. If you NEED to pull an all-nighter (try to avoid them), drink a cup of straight up black coffee (no sugar) and take a 20 minute nap. It takes some time for the caffeine to kick in so you might as well get some sleep. You’ll eventually get used to the bitterness.
7. Sometimes you need to skip school but don’t skip unless you absolutely have to. If you do, you better not sleep in! Wake up normally and get to work ASAP. Do the makeup work and turn it in the next day, even if you don’t have to.
8. Study smarter, not harder. Figure out which study methods work for you. Note-taking is time-consuming so try to find alternatives. You don’t have to make everything aesthetically pleasing to post it on tumblr. In fact, if you’re compelled to take pretty notes just to post it on tumblr, LEAVE NOW. DO NOT WASTE TIME.
9. Do homework for the learning experience instead of the grade. Don’t copy work from your friends. If you use homework as a study resource, you won’t have to worry about long review sessions before a test. I have never studied for a Spanish test but the lowest score I’ve ever gotten on one is a 93. How? I did my homework.
10. STOP TRYING TO BE PERFECT. STOP IT RIGHT NOW. Perfection = waste of time. Don’t spend 10 hours writing an essay if you know you can get the same grade by only spending 2. I used to believe that the most important thing was being proud of everything you put your name on but none of that matters when you haven’t slept in 48 hours.
11. Complete the difficult tasks first. One of the many reasons people procrastinate is to avoid difficult tasks. If you save the hardest assignment for last, you’re more vulnerable to wasting time.
12. This one is very bad because it involves lying but it saved my grade a couple of times: ALWAYS turn in your homework. Why? Rarely missing an assignment gives you a good reputation and teachers tend to trust hardworking students. If you ever forget to do an assignment and you’re known to be a good student, your teacher is more likely to believe your excuse. Or, if you really left it at home, he/she/they might give you an extra day.
13. GOOGLE DRIVE IS YOUR BEST FRIEND. Can’t turn in your essay because you told yourself you’d print it in the morning and forgot? No worries! It’s in google drive! Need a past assignment for reference but have the copy at home? No worries! It’s in google drive!
14. Your study space significantly impacts productivity. Organize your room/space to maximize concentration/productivity.
15. MOST IMPORTANTLY, give yourself some time off. If you don’t, you’ll eventually burn out and nothing will be able to motivate you again. I like to go watch a movie alone once in a while because it clears my mind for 2 hours. Being constantly bombarded with due dates can lead to massive anxiety issues. And guess what? You can’t get anything done if you’re having multiple panic attacks or if you’re in bed all day because you’re depressed. Take care of yourself. School can wait but your physical and mental health can’t.

TIPS ON HOW TO WRITE AN OPINION
So there’s this technique that one our our teachers taught us before the school year ends and, I do not know if you guys already know it but I thought I wanted to share it with you guys.
It’s called the PREP method:
POSITION - State your opinion. Whether you’re pro, against, or anything.
REASON - State the reason, pretty simple.
EXAMPLE - Do some research, state examples, and, if possible, give real-life experiences.
POSITION - As a conclusion, restate your position on the given situation.
FOR EXAMPLE: Stand on death penalty
As a Catholic, I am not in favor with the passing of the death penalty. One of the main reasons being we have the power to change our own lives. By taking away the lives of criminals, we are also taking away their chance to change. For example, an ex-convict may experience metanoia just by serving in prison for a period of time.Take Jean Valjean from Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables for example. Who knew that an ex-convict like him, rejected by society, would be their selfless mayor that everyone admires in the future. Now imagine if he was sentenced to death because of his crime, he would not have the chance to change his ways and be selfless. I do believe that people can still change if they want to, and that is why I am against the implementation of death penalty.
I hope this post helped some!
Back to School
- organize your room and study area before you go back to school
- take thirty minutes a week to do a bit of cleaning so that you aren’t overwhelmed by stuff
- have space in your study area for the papers/stuff that you know will be soon piling up everywhere (if it is part of the plan then it isn’t mess)
- buy extra pens, white out, highlighters etc. because then when you need them you will have them
- keep your sheets/notes in folders so that you can easily refer to them
- try to focus on one thing at a time because it will result in you getting more stuff done overall even if you feel like you have less free time
- spend time during the term revising so that when exams come around you don’t feel too rushed
- remember to choose what you spend your time on wisely
tips for science majors (and all college students)
hey everyone! i decided to compile a list of tips for college students, specifically science majors because a lot of people are starting college soon. a lot of these could apply to any majors in general, but i’m simply speaking from my own experience.
handwrite your notes! I know it can be tempting to type them on your laptop because so many science classes are so heavy with information and lectures move so fast, but handwriting notes is super helpful and a lot of times an easier option, especially when drawing diagrams and writing reactions
make at least 2 friends in every class to study and share notes with. chances are you won’t understand everything perfectly and getting a different perspective might make things clearer. also helpful if you miss a lecture!
practice questions are your best friend! this is true for most classes, but they’re absolutely necessary when it comes to classes like organic chemistry. look up practice questions and tests online and use them.
if you don’t already know any statistics, learn the basics. stats is ESSENTIAL and has come in handy for almost every science class i’ve taken. knowing what a t-test is, p value, alpha value, etc. beforehand is super helpful for labs and reading papers.
practice reading scientific journal articles as much as you can. this is a skill that i’ve yet to master and can be really frustrating but knowing how to process and understand those dense articles is really important no matter what you want to do in your life. most school libraries have subscriptions to most major databases like pubmed and journals like nature and science, so dedicate some time once or twice a month to read an article that’s interesting to you. focus on trying to interpret the figures and summarizing the data.
youtube is great for explaining scientific concepts you don’t understand. because certain processes and molecules etc. are so complex and may be hard to understand from a textbook with words and 2-D pictures, videos on youtube might explain and help visualize things better. there are some good ones out there but googling the topic you’re looking for usually brings up some helpful material!
khanacademy (my all-time fave i would literally die for khan academy guy he can have my firstborn)
crash course
interactive biology
bozeman science (also has videos for ap bio/chem/physics/environmental science!)
minute physics
get involved in research as early as possible. even if you don’t think you’ll like it, getting involved in research is a great experience for anyone. research professors and their work and email as many as you can before the semester starts to see if you can work in their labs. not only does it look great on your resume but you’ll also learn so much about the scientific process.
get a chalkboard/whiteboard for your room. it’s a great study tool to practice drawing mechanisms, reactions, processes, figures, etc. it literally saved my butt in organic chem last year.
don’t get stressed if you don’t know what you want to do with your major. try different things. do research in different labs on varying topics, talk to your professors and advisors, do some shadowing, talk to people in different industries.
rewrite your notes and redraw diagrams. rewriting notes is a good tip for anyone, but redrawing diagrams in a different way than they’re presented in your textbook or lecture in a way that you understand better is super helpful.
don’t put lab reports off until the last minute. lab reports are the bane of my existence, but there’s nothing more stressful than doing one at the last minute before it’s due and realizing your results made NO sense. start them as soon as you finish the lab and don’t be afraid to ask for help from your lab instructor or other students.
those are all the ones i could think of at the moment! hopefully some of these are helpful for some of you :-)
SHS PLANNER SETUP
Hey everyone! It’s been a while since I last posted here, but I’m back! Since here in the Philippines, school is starting in a few weeks, I’ve decided to do a planner setup post. Please note that this will be my first time to try actually using a planner (I’ve tried before but I keep on being lazy and not use it by like, after a few weeks) and I’m actually pretty excited. I am an incoming Senior High School student and I will be taking up STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) So anyways, here’s my planner setup:
So this is my planner, apparently Filofax is not available in my country, but I bought this A5 binder a few years ago and decided to make it my planner.
My dashboard is a simple geometric print that I’ve printed on a normal paper, and I’ve just cut a piece of acetate sheet on top of it to keep it protected. I also have a chili keychain on top just for decoration.
So next, I have this pocket where I keep my sticky tabs.
Next I have these pieces of paper I have punched holes on to so I could write down some short notes and insert them on my weekly spreads or wherever I want them to. I also have some lined paper which originally came from the binder for some lists which then I put on another tab.
And now onto the first tab: the monthly/weekly spreads. My tabs were made from a plastic folder which I have cut down to size and punched holes on to.
Before my monthly/weekly spreads, I have this pocket which holds some important school stuff. Right now I have this card which we were supposed to submit on our first day of classes.
I also printed this bible verse before the start of the monthly spread.
And here is my monthly spread! I’ve made all my inserts on my own using Microsoft Publisher and it actually took me a few attempts before I got it to how I want it to look like. I also have this tab at the bottom made with acetate sheet as well to serve as a bookmark to the current month.
And here is my weekly spread, which I decided to keep not dated so I would not take too much time editing the inserts. I have this tab on top which takes me to the current week.
Now you might probably be wondering what that green tab on top is for. Well, It’s a divider so I could easily go to where my monthly spreads are. I’ve printed them on the back of a weekly spread so I could just insert them in between my weekly spreads easily.
Now my second tab takes me to where I keep my notes and other stuff such as this ink bleed test as you can see above.
My third tab consists of blank pages just so I can doodle stuff whenever I feel bored and I have nothing to do.
Currently, I do not have anything yet for my fourth tab, but I keep this pocket at the back where I keep some other papers which I might be needing in the future as reference.
And that’s it for this post! I hope you guys found it helpful, oh, and if you have any suggestions on what I could keep on the fourth tab, or any suggestions on my planner in general, do not be shy to message me, it would be very much appreciated!
