My 5⭐️ review of We Will Not Be Saved by Nemonte Nenquimo.

This is harrowing, but don’t be fooled by the title, it’s also a hopeful and inspiring memoir. The opening chapters were pretty hard to read because it confronts you with the pure, multi-faceted evil of the Christian missionaries. Contrasting this are the descriptions of Nemonte’s early life in Toñampare, which are rich, beautiful and incredibly well written. I did feel a bit conflicted about Mitch (her gringo husband) being the one who wrote the book in English, as it’s written in first person prose and this is partly why it feels so powerful, but Nemonte dictated it to him in Spanish so I trust that it’s as authentic to her words as possible. You couldn’t make up a more compelling story. I found this hugely emotionally and spiritally affecting.

This book is healing, and you forget it's a memoir, it feels like a classic novel. Bonkers good.
