Switzerland's entry is so fucking annoying to me as a Ukrainian. Bruh you're not standing on no front lines, please stop embarrassing yourself for the love of God and shut the fuck up. You don't want to be a soldier? Well guess what Ukrainians don't either but we have no fucking choice because we literally protect our right to exist as country and an ethnic group. Him being all like 'let's just stop fighting and war-ing🥺' is so fucking annoying I can't even put it into words. If Ukraine stops fighting it'll cease to exist! Go fucking write a song about not being genocidal maniacs and send it to russia or something. But wait, Croatia already did and they were fucking amazing🔥

If this turns out to be true, it still won’t undermine the liturgies of the tankie left, which believes that there can be no greater evil than NATO and American imperialism. However, it turns out that you can both mount criticisms of US/NATO/capitalist oppression and at the same time observe that in the context of this war the Russians are by far the worse offender.
One socialist tankie told me when I inquired as to why Russian imperialism wasn’t also a problem, that (close paraphrase) Russians will solve their own problems. How does he account for the fact that Russian problems are now Ukrainian problems? I don’t think he thought that far ahead.
Westerners waving peace signs won’t end this war, and even when it ends and peace reigns, it will be because the only route available right now to bring about peace is the elimination of the Russian military in Ukraine.
I finally watched today Komarov's documentary YEAR about the year of war in my country. It came out a month ago, but only now I gathered the courage to see it. And just. How much have we suffered since, yeah? We, in Kyiv are so so lucky to have a relatively calm and relatively safe life here.
Dmytro Komarov was a travel journalist whos project World Inside Out has been insanely popular for years, showing different cultures and worlds not from a tourist POV, but trying to show cultures from within. During his documentary YEAR he says a phrase 'I never expected to become a war journalist in my own city' and yeah, it hit home. There is a segment, also, dedicated to how at the beginning so many of use tried to make our russian family and friends understand, to make them do something to stop this war, and were met with coldness at best and happiness at our suffering at worst. These are typical reactions to this day. For my part, my moscow cousin contacted me only once, and after me sending him a video with the siren blaring, didn't write, once, since.
Anyway, here is the documentary, it has english subtitles available.
I know I write a lot here about my emotions and feelings, about how painful it all is but I really can’t describe you this pain. Your heart hurts, eyes are burning from tears, hands are shaking. You delude yourself into thinking that everything is fine. But it isn’t and probably will never be. When you go to sleep thinking that you should really consider learning tactical medicine and join the army because you feel guilty. Guilty that people that were so much better than you are dead. They were killed by russians. You hate being surrounded only by negative emotions, you hate thinking about daily life problems when your people are dying. You hate choking on tears every day. You hate seeing symbols when they are not there. You hate russians being all happy in Europe not feeling the guilt you feel. It’s not my country that attacked another country, it’s not my soldiers raping and slaughtering civilians - why I feel worse than they do?
Taras Shevchenko and Ira Aldridge by Heorhiy Melikhov, 1963
Famous Ukrainian poet and artist Taras Shevchenko befriended the African-American Shakespearean actor Ira Aldridge, while the latter was on tour to the Russian Empire in 1858. Shevchenko did his portrait in pastel. It is recounted that the two men got along very well. While posing for the portrait, Aldridge sang African-American songs to Shevchenko and in return, the artist taught him Ukrainian songs.
I want to live to this song, fall in love to this song, I want to laugh and cry, run across the summer fields and see off the sun in the evening, I want to smell the salty air at that seaside, become friends with stray cats and follow the birds in the sky, pick will flowers and plant my own at home, I want to be adored as much as this song proclaims, I want to live and die to this song
This song is my revenge and my soulmate story.
It's 6 am. It seems like the whole country is awake. Sometimes it becomes unbearable to read and hear, and to live.
My heart is trembling behind my ribcage. This is a nightmare, here, a real fucking nightmare, fucking apocalypse that never stops. You cant wake up from it. Every day a new death, nothing can stop it... FUCKFUCKFUCK
Even your own death can't stop it. You'll be just a number or, if lucky, a photo to be used as evidence against trolls. Or a fucking meme. And I don't even think it'll make it to the International Criminal Court.
Nothing can stop all these deaths. We are all alone here, fighting this fucking evil empire... fuck
Every single day is a nightmare. I hate it every single piece of shit that glorifies ruzzia. Fuck it.

I want to be him 🥲
What fresh hell is this?!?
That man on some of the covers of “The Brothers Karamazov” is Taras Shevchenko, and he’s THE Ukrainian author. If you remember any Ukrainian author, he is the one to know about. His most well known work is the Kobzar [Kobzars were traveling bards (typically blind) who would sing and play the bandura].
I went looking for an edition with his face as soon as I heard from Dr. Olesya Khromeychuk mentioned it in a keynote lecture from April 8th.
