The Little Things

If you asked Kiku to describe himself in three words, social would not be one of them. Even so, he often found himself in situations where communication was necessary.

     It wasn’t that he was shy, he just preferred not to engage in unneeded conversation.     A homebody, if you will.     Through his own volition, Kiku would seclude himself within his room, surrounded by only the walls, his cold futon, and blank pages of white paper.     That was how he liked it.     Of course, that was before he met Alfred, literally the embodiment of America.     He was loud and obnoxious. He talked for no reason, and spouted random things at an ear bleeding level.     He was blonde, wore glasses and prided himself on guns and baseball.     Yet, Kiku couldn’t help but be attracted to this rambunctious man.     And through years of hardships and miscommunication, Kiku believed he had finally figured Alfred out.     Sure, Alfred was loud, and yea, at times he was unbearably annoying. But in truth, he was rather insecure. Constantly worrying about the expectations of others.     Approval was what he wanted, perhaps recognition.     He helped others in ways that wouldn’t be perceived as kindness, but had the same effect.     Alfred always had intention behind his actions, whether he said it aloud or not.

     Though he was often misunderstood, he always made it his mission to do something to help.     Kiku realized this years after Alfred helped him.     Kiku had never really had “friends”. Of course, he had Ludwig and Felizono, but other than that, he never had made an effort to meet new people.     But after meeting Alfred, Kiku found himself looking forward to meetings that used to make him break into a cold sweat.     No longer did he shift around uncomfortably, wishing that the many eyes of different nations weren't completely on him.     Now when he spoke, he did so with confidence, ensuring his opinion was securely relayed and understood.     When the realization hit him, he felt a sense of dull guilt. In a way, he felt as though he had taken advantage of Alfred’s big personality.     So, Kiku paid him back quietly. First, by becoming an allie. Second, visiting despite his overwhelming travel anxiety. And third, appreciating Alfred for who he was.     Before, Kiku would zone out when Alfred was talking about something he used to label as 'nonsensical". Now, he made sure to listen to every little detail, remembering stuff Alfred himself would have forgotten he said.     It was the little things that made the most difference.     “Keeks, have you seen my sublime shirt anywhere? I could’ve sworn I put it in my top drawer of my dresser yesterday. I just cleaned it!” Alfred grumbled, searching their shared room.     Kiku sat on the edge of their bed, book in hand. He glanced around, his eyes tracing Alfred’s moves as he threw clothes left and right.     Without looking up from his novel, Kiku said, “You left it in the living room yesterday. You were going to put it in the dresser but you got sidetracked.”     “OHHH, now I remember! Thanks dude!” Alfred exclaimed, kissing Kiku Kiku softly on the cheek as thanks. The black haired boy couldn’t help the small smile that formed on his face.     From then on, Kiku found happiness when he assisted Alfred. Whether it be reminding him to do something, or remember small, unimportant things.     But never in the slightest did Kiku regret his decision.

Pochi

“I totally want a dog.” Alfred said from the floor, his back resting against the cool wooden planks.     Kiku raised a brow. “What has made you want a dog?” “I dunno. People say dogs are a mans best friend or somethin’ like that. So, it could be pretty sick to have one.” “Hm. What species?”     Alfred reached for his phone on the coffee table, and looked up local pounds, seeing if any breeds interested him.     With no luck, Alfred turned off his device and set it down. Sighing, he rolled onto his side. “No idea. Probably a small one, though a big one would be totally awesome…” He groaned. “This is hurting my fricken brain! It’s so hard to choose!”     Kiku smiled softly, watching the blonde roll around on the floor. But it also got him thinking as well. What kinda dog would he want if they so happened to get one?                                                   ***                                             (Timeskip)     The rain came down heavily, ruining Kiku’s walk. His hair was soaked, water ran down his face, and he was still a mile away from home!     Grumbling under his breath, Kiku continued to walk, hoping that the storm would soon pass over.     As he walked up a small slope in the sidewalk, Kiku’s eyes landed on a rather damp looking box ahead of him.     With his curiosity peaked, the black haired boy approached the object, his eyes landing on a small, white dog.     Its fur was soaked, and its little body shook with the rainy weather. Feeling sorry for the animal, Kiku gently picked it up, wrapping it in his coat.     When Kiku and his now furry friend made it back, they were greeted by Alfred opening the door.     Alfred blinked. “...Why are you wet?” “I was caught in the storm.”     Alfred looked down when the bundle in Kiku’s arms moved. Alfred raised an eyebrow, a bead of sweat ran down his cheek. “Keeks, why is your jacket moving..?”     Kiku only hesitated for a second before opening up the coat. A tiny white dog peeked out, his soaked fur clinging to its small frame. “Dude! You brought a dog home!? Why didn’t you just say that immediately!? Get in here!!”     Alfred guided Kiku in, his hand pressed firmly to the shorter's back.     Once they were all inside, Alfred went to the bathroom and brought out two towels. Kiku took one for the dog and started to dry the shivering creature, while Alfred used the other on Kiku’s hair. “Where did you find this little guy?” Alfred asked, his hands still moving the towel on Kiku’s head. “Looks like he doesn’t have a collar either…” “I found him on the side of the road in a box. When I looked inside, I felt very bad for him, so I brung him home.” “Well, at least he won’t have to survive in that kinda weather. It’s pouring out there!”     Kiku hummed in agreement, his back gently settling against Alfred’s chest, suddenly aware of his exhaustion.     The dog peeked its head out of the towel, his tongue gently hanging from its mouth.     Kiku found himself smiling at the creature that resembled a mochi, small and round.

"May we keep him?" Kiku asked.

"Sure." Kiku raised a brow, seemingly confused at Alfred's quick answer. "Are you positive?" "Yes." "Okay. Thank you." "You're welcome. So, waddya wanna name it?" Kiku thought for a moment. When he finally came to a conclusion, he looked back at Alfred. "Pochi." "Pochi it is then.

Rest now

“Aw, dude, I had the worst sleep last night!” Alfred yawned. “I assumed so. You kept tossing. Was it perhaps a bad dream?” Kiku responded. “Maybe,” Alfred said in return. “I can’t remember though.”     Alfred rubbed his eyes, and walked into the kitchen. He opened one of the cabinets and grabbed his mug.     While still fighting away his drowsyness, Alfred poured himself a cup of coffee, and then poured in his creamer, making it more of a warm, sweet drink rather than normal coffee. “Please make sure not to drink too much, Alfred. You always tend to drink more than you need and end up not being able to fall asleep.” Kiku said from the living room.     Alfred hummed in acknowledgement as he took a big swig, sighing contently when the warm contents satisfied his thirst.

Setting the cup down, Alfred yawned once more, blinking away the moisture that formed his eyes.

Eventually, he finished the remaining coffee and washed it, making sure to put it in the drying rack.     He turned the kitchen light off and made his way into the living space, and on the couch beside Kiku.     Yawning once more, Alfred moved his head to lay on Kiku’s thigh. He snuggled in closer, relishing in the warmth of his fiance.     Kiku smiled softly, and patted his head, leaving his hand to brush through the wheat field that was Alfred’s hair.     Moments later, soft snores erupted from the taller man, leaving Kiku to bask in the silence of the room.     He kept his pace of running his fingers through Alfred’s locks. He watched as the man slept, his features relaxed, making him appear younger.     Kiku was glad he could be the one to provide Alfred comfort, and he wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

I will always love you

“Dude, this totally fricken sucks! How did I gain 10 stupid pounds! I work out like a friggin champ!” Alfred complained while glaring down at the scale below him.     Kiku was down in the kitchen preparing dinner when he heard the groans of his fiance coming from their bedroom.     He washes his hands, and makes sure to dry them before beginning his descent up the stairs.     Kiku opened their bedroom door and saw Alfred standing in front the mirror sideways. “What is the matter, Alfred?” Kiku said approaching the pouting blonde. “I’m gettin’ fat dude! Look at my gut!” He said, grabbing it and squeezing.     Kiku couldn’t help but laugh at the taller man. “Why are you laughing?” Alfred whined. “Is it that bad!?” Kiku shook his head, a small smile laying on his lips. “Of course not. You just say the silliest things sometimes.”

“Nothing about this is silly! I’m being dead serious right now, man! What if I become obese! I could be featured on 1,000 lb life!”     Kiku suppressed a laugh with his hand as he moved closer to Alfred. “If it makes you feel any better, I think it is quiet cute.” Kiku said, suddenly rather shy.     Alfred cocked an eyebrow up. “Are you serious..?” “Why would I lie to you?” “Yea your right. Why would even ask?” Alfred whispered to himself. “But i’m like…10 pounds heavier than the guy that proposed to you!” “Size does not matter, Alfred. I will always love you for who you are, not your appearance.” Kiku replied, handing him a freshly laundred shirt. “Keeks, dude, that’s like the nicest thing anyone has said to me…” “I’m glad you feel that way.”     It’s not what on the outside that counts, but what lies within.

You don't have to ask

Kiku didn’t cuddle.

Key word: didn’t.

Because somehow, no matter the circumstances, Alfred always made him want to.

It didn’t matter how. Spooning. Kiku resting his head against Alfred’s chest. Alfred draping himself over Kiku like it was the most natural thing in the world.

It made him feel something he hadn’t allowed himself to feel in decades. Perhaps even centuries.

So when Kiku found himself unable to sleep without Alfred’s arm slung snugly around his waist, he truly didn’t know what to do with himself.

He turned over in bed, the sheets whispering softly, and was met with Alfred sprawled on his back, tiny snores filling the darkened room. The sound was… comforting. Annoyingly so. Hesitating, Kiku lifted a hand and gently shook Alfred’s arm.

“Alfred…?” he murmured. “Um, Alfred…”

How utterly embarrassing.

Alfred blinked awake, bleary and unfocused, before his gaze landed on Kiku. Whatever sleep still clung to him melted instantly. Kiku’s eyes were wide and uncertain, almost like a puppy asking for permission it didn’t think it deserved.

Cute. “You okay?” Alfred asked groggily, rolling onto his side so they were facing each other. Their faces a few inches apart now.

“Could we, uh…” Kiku gestured vaguely between them, hoping desperately that Alfred would understand without him having to say the words aloud.

Thankfully, Alfred caught on almost immediately.

Without a word, he slid closer and draped his arm over Kiku’s waist, his palm settling warmly against the small of his back.

Kiku exhaled a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding.

He tucked his head beneath Alfred’s chin, breathing in the faint scent of caramel and wood. (I was gonna put burgers but ya know😼)

Alfred nudged his foot between Kiku’s ankle, surrounding him completely.

“You know you don’t have to ask, Keeks,” Alfred murmured, already drifting back toward sleep.

Kiku huffed quietly, relaxing despite himself. “This is your fault.”

“I take full responsibility.”

The lost ring

“Dude, where is it!?” Alfred exclaimed rather loudly from the living room.     Kiku was out on the porch, sweeping fallen limbs and leaves off of the wooden surface. He sighed hearing Alfred’s booming complaints from across the house.     Reluctantly, Kiku set the broom aside and made his way back into the house.     Once back under the comfort of their roof, Kiku watched as Aflred frantically rummaged around the living space. He threw pillows and knocked off their quilt from the back of the couch.     He lifted cushions and checked under tables. Even went to unlikely places like the oven and even the sink.     Kiku picked up a pillow, lightly tossing it back on the couch before grabbing the back of Alfred’s jacket. “What are you looking for? You are making a mess.” Kiku said, slight annoyance behind his dark brown eyes.     Alfred visibly deflated as he felt the shorter man’s anger radiate towards him. Kiku watched as he mustered up the courage to say what’s provoked him to clutter the whole house. “I might have lost my..engagement..ring..?” Alfred said quietly, afraid of the wrath he might have to come to terms with.     Kiku stared at him, hoping that Alfred was only trying to be silly. But when Alfred’s gaze faltered, and he fiddled with the trim of his jacket, Kiku accepted that his fiance had truly lost his ring. “Where did you last have it, Alfred?” Kiku said through gritted teeth. “I don’t remember! I had it on this morning, I took a shower with it on, stared at it for awhile, ate with it on, and then it just…disappeared! Look, Keeks, I’m super duper sorry! Please help me find it…? You know what, i’ll even make dinner for the next month and i’ll do even more chores! And uh..i’ll-” “Alfred.” “Sorry…” “You look in the bedroom. I will look out here in the kitchen and living room.” Kiku said with finality, bending down to start looking under the couch. Alfred nodded, going his own way to the bedroom.     It was around half an hour before Alfred came out of their shared room, claiming he had no luck finding the missing ring. Kiku sighed, also claiming he had not found it either.     So they once again split up. Alfred took the den and laundry room, and Kiku tackled the bathroom and the garden.     It wasn’t until an hour later Alfred yelled victoriously from the den. Kiku set down a rock he had lifted and followed the blonde’s voice back inside.     Kiku was met with the sight of a silver ring shoved in his face, behind it was a beaming Alfred. “Dude you won’t believe where I found this sucker!” He said, sliding the ring back on his finger. “It was next to the coat rack! How weird is that?” “That is indeed odd.” It wasn’t. Kiku speculated that it probably slipped off when Alfred came home and took off his jacket. He smiled a bit, amused at how worried the taller man was. “Now, how about you get to making dinner.” “Aww, dang it!”

Bad day

The door slammed open, causing Kiku to jump. From the den, he heard shoes being tossed to the side and a jacket being thrown over the coat holder. He peeked around the corner to see Alfred running a hand through his unruly blonde hair.     He sighs loudly and his shoulders droop with exhaustion. Kiku cleared his throat, and Alfred looked up. He smiled softly at the sight of his boyfriend’s bangs tied up off of his face. “Welcome back.” Kiku said, walking over to the taller man and wiping the grime off his now warm cheek. “How was it?”     Alfred sighs, leaning into the hand caressing his face. He nods slowly, weighing out his response.  “Who knew a family reunion could turn to crap in just thirty minutes?” He laughed bitterly, his once clear eyes now coated with gloss. “I thought we’d all be able to talk. It’s just that Arthur never listens, while Francis is too soft on him, and Mattie… is just Mattie!”

    Alfred turned his head, covering his eyes with one hand, the other gripped Kiku arm sleeve. His shoulders tightened as tears threatened to spill.

“Why can’t he just listen..!?” His voice cracked, exhaustion laced every word he spoke. Kiku watched as this once loud, obnoxious boy, trembled in his arms, and fought back unwanted emotions.

    He pulled Alfred closer, gently removing the hand that covered his eyes. His eyes were round like a puppy’s, filled to the brim with unshed tears.  For a moment there was only silence as Alfred’s gaze searched Kiku’s face for any judgment, which of course, he found none. “I believe that you care too much.” Kiku said, wiping away a tear that escaped Alfred’s eye. “I am not saying you should stop, but what I am saying is the fact you care so much is going to be your downfall. You need to understand that not everybody feels as much as you do.”     Alfred nods as Kiku speaks, his ears drinking in every word pouring from his lips. “You are so lively. I do not wish to see that spark fade. Understand that you are human too, and have your own needs and emotions. Do not berate yourself for not receiving the bare minimum. In fact, the next time you see your family, I request to go with. If you do not mind my presence of course.”     Alfred sniffles, leaning his throbbing head on his boyfriend’s shoulder. He nods in confirmation. “Yea, I want you to be there. Thanks Keeks, this..this really means a lot. I didn’t mean to dump all that on you, man.” “You need not thank me. You have only shared your feelings like anyone should.” Kiku replied, his hand resting in between Alfred’s shoulder blades.

“Love you Keeks.”

“I love you too, Alfred.”

Late...again

“Alfred, you need to wake up.” Kiku said for the hundredth time, gently shaking the taller man’s arm. All he got in response was a groan as Aflred buried his face back into the cotten pillow.       Kiku sighed and slumped onto the bed, the bedframe swaying with the sudden movement. The reason for his distress was the fact that the couple had to attend a meeting in an hour.

       And simply knowing his boyfriend, Kiku knew for a fact it would take about 30 minutes for the American to get up, and based on the pace Alfred was going right now, they would most definitely be late.

    If the asian was being completely honest, he would rather not have Ludwig lecture him about “time management”.

    “If you do not wake up, I will refuse to give you any physical affection.” That did the trick. Alfred shot up sleepily, rubbing his eyes with a clenched fist.

“Dude, unfair!” The blonde complained groggily, pushing the rest of the blankets off of his body. “Why do we even have to go Keeks? It’s not like anything important happens at those meetings anyways!”

    Kiku listened to his complaints and handed his boyfriend his clothes and turned his gaze to the nightstand before Alfred stripped himself naked. No shame that man has. The boy slipped on his pants, and began to look for his missing glasses.

“Put your shirt on.” Kiku said while finding his glasses on the bathroom counter. Alfred threw on his shirt and placed his glasses on, blinking as his gaze adjusted.

    After Alfred had finished getting dressed, Kiku fixed his hair, and then guided him out to the kitchen. Alfred ate the food offered to him, and pecked Kiku’s lips as a thank you. Even after being rushed, they still ended up being late. Kiku groaned internally as the German reprimanded them for their tardiness. Next time, he’ll just leave Alfred at home.

Snow day

Bright soft snow fell gently from the sky and landed gracefully on the ground only to dissolve. Alfred watched giddly as the powder piled up, covering the roads and decorating the slim trees with white. He sat by the window, protected by a blanket and warm cocoa. “Keeks’ look at how much snow there is now!” He exclaimed like a child on Christmas.     Kiku made his way to the window where his boyfriend, Aflred, was occupying. He hummed in agreement as he noticed the once green landscape was now littered with frost and snow. “You are correct. There is quite the amount of it.” Kiku replied, amused to see how incredibly happy his partner was. “I must ask though, how are you not cold? I can feel the air coming through the window from where I am standing.”     Alfred grinned, pulling his rather warm mug closer to his body. “Oh, I’m freezing! But who would wanna miss out on watching this?” He shivered slightly, but exclaimed happily when the snow began to fall quicker. “Dude, it’s coming down so fast! This is friggin’ sick!”     Kiku rubbed his hands together, backing away from the cold air spilling from the crevice of the glass. He walked back into the kitchen, grabbing his own cup of his favorite tea. After settling back down on the couch, Kiku draped a quilt he had found resting on the back of the couch over his legs.       He observed as Alfred shivered again, finally giving into the low temperature, and hobbled to the couch and placed himself beside Kiku and also under the quilt. His shoulders relaxed as the warmth of the shorter boy greeted him.     The blonde shifted, and laid his head on the asian’s chest, and felt his slender fingers comb through his messy bed head. He sighed happily, and basked in the affection that was being granted to him.     Cocoa and tea left forgotten on the coffee table, Kiku and Alfred enjoyed the presence of one another, soon forgetting the snow that fell outside.
