What is Earth Science?

Earth science is the study of everything the earth is composed of specifically our atmosphere, water forms, land forms and the cycles that occur in those particular surroundings. Earth science is composed of three main branches mainly oceonography, geology and meteorology which is about everything that is in land, water, in our atmosphere, biosphere and other terms related to “earth”. It about the climate of the earth, the soil on the ground, the waters on the oceans and seas, the ice on the glaciers in the north and south pole and basically everything that you see in this earth that is natural and non-living and some of the living things too like plants and trees.

Share about the worst weather-related experience you've had in your life (i.e. storms, tornados, blizzards, lightning, etc). Blog about what happened, how you felt and your after-thoughts.

The worst experience related to weather in my life was actually the typhoon Yolanda I think. It was the strongest typhoon I have ever witnessed in my whole life even though it was stronger in Tacloban, it was still very strong here in Cebu. If I remember correctly, we had no electricity and water for almost a week. We had to stay in our houses because the typhoon was so strong. Trees fell down near our house and the streets were so flooded. It was always pitch black at night without flash lights and candles and there was also thunder but I didn’t really see a lightning light up in the sky because I had to stay inside the house. It was also really really boring because I had nothing to do. No TV, no internet, no computer, and no charging places.

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

During construction, the strength and stability of our building was not really that strong until we finally stabilized the first floor of our building. We had to go through some issues like straws that are not that strong enough to withstand a large amount of weight. The strongest part of our building was probably the sides of the first floor and the weakest part of it was the sides of the second floor. We used the string to tie up or support some straws in the middle and sides. We used the pins to pin some straws together so that it would be stronger compared to tying it with a string. If we had 5 more straws, we would probably place it in the base to make the base more firm or in the middle of the second floor so that the straws in the middle wont bed if something heavy is placed on top of it.

“Water Contamination”

   There are a lot of aquifers in the map. Those are river 1 and river 3 because groundwater can easily flow in slopes from a mountaintop going downwards to ground streams that create rivers. The area near well P could also be an aquifer due to its high elevation. This is advantageous in a way that it replenishes water supply.  Well H's contamination is coming from from "Metal Works" due to the minerals being extracted and used and then flows down to the well affecting it. Well H also affects well D. For Well M, the contamination is coming from several large coal mines  located in the "Cornhead Coal Mine."  River 7 have benn affected slightly by Well N with a decreasing amount of contamination to 5mg/L, slightly affecting river 8 and with the same amount of contamination.  Well I holds 30mg/L at 130 as it's elevation while Well E holds 10mg/L at 120 as it's elevation. I believe that the contamination is from "Earls fuel depot". Well E is less contaminated because the location of well E is a little lower causing the contamination to spread, although not really as much as Well I. Well I is more contaminated due to it's slightly higher elevation which contains more.

Racing Extinction

One thing that I would change in my lifestyle is not being so mindful of our surroundings, our environment, about nature, about animals and plants. Most of the time, I can't really see and care for plants and animals because of the benefits that they give to us. It's like I'm blinded by my pleasures and interests but after watching the video in our science class about race extinction, it made me realize that animals are just as important as human beings. There's alot of reasons why people kill animals but one main reason for this is because of money. As they say, money is the root of all evil. I believe that saying is true because people kill animals no matter what the cost just to earn money. And to earn money with that cost is not worth it because there will come a time that endangered species will be erased from this world if they keep on killing them. I feel sad for the next generation of humans because they can't experience, feel, or see the species that the incompetent people in this world kill just to earn money. Just like incidents that were shown in the video, the people are killing manta rays and sharks just to earn money and to earn money by killing sharks so that they could make medicine doesn't make any sense because they believe somethin in them cures cancer but in fact it, it was not scientifically proven.

Weekly Challenge #8

For three days, limit your water consumption during your bath time. It can either be:

a. Keeping your number of scoops/“kabo” at or below 15. b. Limiting your shower time to 5 minutes. c. If you naturally use less than 15 scoops, count your usual number of scoops and divide it by two. After the three days, answer the following questions: 1. How does it feel to have your water consumption limited to a minimal amount? 2. Is this something you can do long-term? 3. In the future, with the amount of shortages we have when it comes to water, limiting your water consumption may be inevitable. What are your thoughts on this?

       It feels like I’m saving mother earth by contributing to small things in our community like this experiment. Before I did this experiment, I didn’t think I can bathe in fifteen or less than 15 scoops of “kabo” because normally, I bathe around 20 minutes but that already includes taking a dump of contemplating about life. It also feels good because I can save water and lessen the expenses that my parents are paying. This is really something you can do in a long-term basis because now that you think about it, it is really possible and also beneficial to you, your parents, and mother earth. We never know what will happen in the future so practicing this can help you in the long run because you already know and have experienced it. I think other people should do this too because even though 2/3 or 70% of this earth is H20 or water, only 2.5% of it is fresh and just 1% of the freshwater in this world is easily accessible because most of the freshwater are currently trapped in glaciers or snowfields.

Take a look around the campus. Try to identify certain areas/slopes that are showing signs of instability and have the tendency to fail. Take a picture of these areas and explain why they are unstable using the Assessment tools we are going to discuss throughout the week.

I took this picture at the back side of the RH building. I chose this part because here, it is very prone to landslide due of soil erosion. Whenever it rains hard, this part of the school will be flooded thus looking like a waterfall. For me, this part is really unstable and have a really high tendency to fail whenever there are really strong calamities like storms. typhoons, floods, sinkholes or earthquakes. But the foundation of the building is somewhat strong that’s what it can support the building despite the circumstance.

You were given a sizeable piece of land by your wealthy uncle (~20 Hectares). Upon checking, you realized that the land had the following features: It is highly arable (good for agriculture,  It is rich in mineral deposits,  It is found in a prime area (good for commercial use), and It has a fresh, clean river running through it.

Most of the people encountering a circumstance of receiving this kind of opportunity would just probably sell it for a really really high price. Smart people would make the most of all of it. I would prefer doing the second one. I would start small by using one of the given specifically the ones involving minerals. I would make a mining site and gain as much profit in order for me to move on to my plan. After I gain as much money for me to choose from the three left, I would then proceed to agriculture, which I would then build a farm and everything. After that, I would make use of the river by making a business that sells drinkable water to the people. Lastly, I would commercialize the remaining land for others to buy it or make a building out of it if it is located near or in an urban area or sell it if it is in a rural area.

Use your creativity to come up with a fictional mineral. Then make up a corresponding mineral profile about it. Use the properties we discussed/will discuss to help you with this. Also, include how this material can be used if mined/gathered, etc.

If i were to create a fictional mineral, I would probably name it zeus, like the greek god. It would be a naturally occurring mineral and have a hardness of 10. This mineral would be very metallic and have a streak number of 10. The cleavage of this mineral would be cubic, meaning  when a mineral breaks in three directions and the cleavage planes form right angles (90 degrees to each other). Results in pieces in the shape of a cube. The fracture of this would be conchoidal and does not effervescence.This is a mineral than can generate a high amount of mechanical electricity enough to give electricity to all the people in the world for decades if properly used. This can be gathered by the use of a metal with a very low conductivity to electricity due to the very high power of this mineral.

Looking at the qualities and properties of rocks and minerals, which one of these can you relate to? Which ones do not describe who you are as a person?

If I were to compare myself to a rock, I would probably say I’m a clastic sedimentary rock. The reason behind this why I can say I’m a clastic sedimentary rock is that a clastic rock has many different components and parts combined together to form one mineral or thing. Me on the other hand also has many different personalities in many different situations and I always don’t act the same way. Another thing is sedimentary rocks are type of rocks that are formed by deposition and subsequent cementation, meaning it is broken down into many parts and formed into one over time. Just like my attitudes and personalities, I didn’t have those traits back when I was born. It was developed when I was growing up. So I can really say that I’m not like a non clastic rock and it doesn’t really describe me as a person because it’s very opposite to me.

My thoughts and adventures during my first month of Senior High life

In the first month of my senior high school life, it was really all about making adjustments in terms of education, school, studying, schedules although it isn’t that much different from the junior high school life, I still had to adjuts because I transferred to another campus of USC. The first month was all about discovering and trying new things like not going in class just so yo could make an assignment or project, studying late and things like that. The experience was really new cause’ whenever you leave the campus, temptations start to fill your sight like internet cafes, food shops or places to chill. I always thought that going into this campus would always be fun but as I’ve reached the second month of the semester, it is moslty the same as the junior high.

List down the positive and negative things you do towards each sphere

Positive: I help other people who are in need. Helping other with just small things can make a big difference to the society. It maybe a small thing but remember, you can become a good example for others to follow and so that they could also help other people. I also encourage people to pick up the trash or litter that they throw everywhere because they are destroying mother earth with it

Negative : Sometimes, I can become a bad example to other people by being lazy. Whenever I see trash or litter on the ground, I tell other people to pick it up instead of picking it up myself.

"Who am I in the midst of the universe?" Figuratively speaking, I am just like a spec of dust in the universe but in the eyes of God, I am an instrument of Him who will spread goodness in this world and will always be ready to lend a helping hand to those who are in need.
