Doing a Ted Lasso rewatch in preparation for the new season, and it's time I finally speak my truth. I hate the "Jamie quitting football to be a reality star" bit.
I know it's supposed to show how far he was willing to go to piss off his dad, but the idea of someone playing at his level, doing something he loves, throwing it all away is just so hard for me to suspend my disbelief for. It's one of those things they did that is just too silly for me to buy in. I just pretend that the whole thing never happened for the sake of my sanity.
I'm grateful it gave us that one shot of Phil Dunster semi-shirtless nonetheless.
This is not a critique of OP but I feel like there is an element of this that some people miss. I’m gonna explain my thoughts on it. Apologies that it’s gonna be wordy.

So, to me, the move isn’t truly to piss off his dad. That is what he tells Ted, but he keeps his protective armor up high around the coach. Makes sense that he’d sort of float near the real reason without giving it.
I believe the real reason ties into the Window of Tolerance. WoT is the zone where you feel safe, can navigate emotional distress well, can keep your thoughts in order. Everyone’s window is fairly unique to them. So two people can experience the same event but only one comes out of it still pretty normal.
Victims of child abuse often find their window not only changes size, but it also can slide along the line of the spectrum.
In Jamie’s case, I believe his window was warped by James, so that even if it narrowed, it was now that new size but moved well into the tolerating violence area.
But since our windows aren’t static, they can shift back into where they once were. (Often through therapy but that’s a rant for another day).
Jamie’s time in Richmond, away from his dad, let his window shift down from where it had been shoved. He could regulate better. Was learning to lower his defenses. He just wasn’t as braced for withstanding the violence his dad carried around with him.
So you might think, if James warped it once, surely he’d just warp it again.
Except Jamie now knew what it felt like to be free from that. When you’re a kid, you don’t have much to base your expectations on, so you don’t notice the warping as clearly. It can hit like a drug, that first time you realize how much better something can be.
And then he was being yanked back into that state again. But the tolerance for withstanding that chaos has lowered. You feel the loss of what you had only just begun to really experience very keenly.
Now we have a Jamie Tartt that is back in Manchester, with his dad being like Freddy Krueger and popping up unexpectedly, and with the knowledge of what it’s like to live without this ever present lowkey aura of danger. He can’t reawaken the apathy that protected him as before. The pressure is building up, he can’t regulate how his dad makes him feel, and he cracks.
He didn’t run to LCA. He was running from his dad. Leaving football was the sacrifice he gave up, because it seemed worth it to sever the tie that kept his father to him. However, those weeks away allowed him to reset again, to regulate his responses with a clearer mind.
And he realized that giving up football was not worth it actually. So he needed to rebuild his life, in a way that kept his father from him. And when did he learn to have that freedom? During his loan to AFC Richmond.
