Hey guys - sorry it’s been a while. I’ve been busy with life and running the other blog. So much so that I’ve only been jamming and not writing to Albany music. This brings me to casette-culturey PineSheets, an Albany-based lo-fi synth multi-intrumentalist with Mac Demarco’s vibez combined with Ariel Pink’s ear. If I were to describe it, I would consider Pinesheets the local How To Dress Well of the weirdo synth scene.
Hi. Sorry for the radio silence the past week. I was out looking at things in California. Anyways, this past week a couple of gems popped up while I was taking a much needed computer break. The first I’ll talk about is The Creepy Club, an experimental minimalist project spearheaded by Albany-based musician, Liz Hammond.
Creepy Culture’s debut release, Dirty Future, is one of those releases that you can get lost in with a very cinematic feel. My personal favorite track is the very pretty title track “Dirty Future” which is a very sparse instrumental track and the tones reminds me a bit of the early Love of Everything stuff. Check err out.
It’s been almost a week since my last post. As I mentioned in the “about” section, I’m really not expecting to update this all of the time, only when I find a jammer. With that being said, Albany’s Laugh Line’s definitely has a jammer.
Formerly of Portland, Maine Laugh Lines (aka Leticia Monroe and Ryan Kilgallon) has an electro-pop / indietronica instrumentation, paired with strong hypnotic female vocals. if you are fan of Grimes, MS MR, or Bats for Lashes, you would probably be into Laugh Lines. Keep your eyes pealed for the duo’s EP set to drop this August.
Albany-based two-piece Dankwolf released a new five song EP last week that has been pretty top notch. Consisting of Sean Hill (guitars/vocals) and Eric Segerstrom (drums/vocals), Dankwolf is a doodling mathrock duo whose sound dabbles somewhere in the middle of Minus the Bear, Bear vs. Shark, and Thursday.
The band recorded Wolves Can’t Fuck With Me in a vague basement in New Paltz with plans to release the album via tape on Bee Side Cassettes out of NYC. This seems to be the first release by the label, but if you manage to land Dankwolf as your first signee, you are probably going to be pretty promising.
Albany-based shoegaze trio, slowshine, are a band that seem to be on a legit lineup at least every other week, which to be honest is pretty rare for the area. The track “July” is more than a year old, but it’s vibez are legit. Below the surface, the song is about a break-up, the breakee not taking the time to take a time out and reevaluate the situation, and then heading off into some FUCKING LOSER’S bed. Fuck that guy.
slowshine are a mix of The Cure, early days of indiemo (Promise Ring, Sunny Day) and Dinosaur Jr. They are playing this Thursday at The Low Beat with Home Body and Eternal Crimes. Rad.
Quad To Can’s EpB three-song EP came out yesterday and it is rather pleasant, or else I would not be wasting my time writing about it. The three-piece recorded the EP between Ithaca and Delmar. Side note: There are cool places to record in Delmar? The coolest place I thought in Delmar was Perfect Blend Espresso Bar & Cafe. Their sandwiches are tha bomb. No offense Make A Cake Next Door. Just not super into desserts.
Back on track, the first song on the EP, “Rain Spout” starts off a little more lo-fi than the rest of the EP, with sunny West Coast vibes vox paired with fuzzy drum machine beats reminiscent of The Kills. The second track, which I believe is the strongest track is “Cold Creator,” which gives me more low key Metric vibes. “La La Onion” is the chillest, where lead singer Emily Ryan can really showcase her dreamy lullaby-vocals.
I’ll have to pop in their first EP, EpA, to get more from this group but it’s 3:54 on a Friday on a July 4th weekend I want to go home and take my shirt off and get pink.
Charmboy is a band that has undoubtedly been around forever, but I just heard about them this week. As a newcomer to Albany, I have not went very in-depth with the scene’s history and the who’s who, as I’m sure in the future will be called out on.
Charmboy is three-piece fronted by Eric Halder (not Craig Finn, who I initially thought). The band has that whole rust-belt Americana thing that I admire a lot about The Hold Steady, but I don’t think Albany is considered part of the rust belt. Is it? Regardless, Charmboy has that whole guy-standing-against-the-wall-taking-it-all-in and making songs about it with obvious classic rock undertones, but not in like an out-of-touch way. It’s more of an all-knowing vibe.
I’m excited to catch them tomorrow night for the first time at the Built4BBQ event (along with a bunch of other bands that I’ll probably post about).
Off Hours, the experimental post-rock project by August Rosa, first grabbed a my attention last week when he released a two-song concept EP about the two prisoners escaping from the Clinton Correctional Facility in the sleepy upstate New York town, Dannemora. "Have a Nice Day” and “A Sophisticated Plan” are both uncomfortable and disjointing, but in a loveable Liars / A Place to Bury Strangers-type way.
I originally was just going to talk more about these two songs, but it seems as though Off Hours has no off hours (see what I did there?), and within the last week, the project released a music video for “All Over,” a song that is not on the David Sweat and Richard Matt album.
Directed by Patrick Dodson and featuring dancer Robert Williams-Taylor, the video showcases the post-rock instrumentation dubbed over a lonely dance routine in locations that I am not knowledgeable about Albany enough to know where exactly. “All Over” is prettier and the vocals are more haunting than on EP 2. Fans of Mono, Caspain, and Mogwai would dig.
Another Albany-based musician I have been listening to lately is a hip-hop-sampler aka Brandon Stewart. The track “Color of your Heart” is a trip-hop beat that could easily be on the next Caribou album.
Now, I’m not sure if this is him singing or not, that would require me doing more investigation work and it already took me five minutes to figure out that “Color of Your Heart” is a re-work of Sarah Barielle’s 2010 song “Kaleidoscope Heart.” If it is his voice then DAMN. A mix of DJ Shadow, Madlib, and Alt-J makes Stew an artist that I will be definitely be keeping tabs on in the future.
Albany-based bedroom-postrock musician, Bare Mattress, released a very charming two song demo, titled ‘Tapa Boca’ in June, and I am just getting around to it now because I started this blog this morning. The two songs, “Nice Life” and “Morning You” are endearing yet sleepy all in the same. The song “Nice Life” crawls with just six sentences worth of lyrics, all about getting away from everything, and starting a new life.
“Morning You” continues the motif of wanting to get away from it all. “Will I Always Be Alone?” sings Bare Mattress with a desperation that only Saddle Creek all-stars have perfected.
Overall this is a strong two-song EP that will give you the saddies, but you won’t be able to turn it off because it’s very pleasant.
