You'd made a pit stop in Santa Carla, intending on grabbing a bite to eat before you swam into deeper waters. You sat on a rock, calling out your song. It didn't take long for you to catch a few potential meals in your net. You just didn't expect them to be creatures of the night.
You had nearly jumped back into the water the second you saw a platinum blonde drop from the sky, but he had caught your wrist. All it took was for you to look into those ocean blues, his eyes even had flecks of green, and you were hooked. David was more curious about you than anything, and the two of you talked as the night stretched on. When you admitted you had stopped for a bite to eat, he told you that dinner was on him. After the boys had fed, they dropped a straggler into the water. They'd watched him scream and struggle, and then how the water turned red. After that, the boys had to admit that you had caught their attention
You pretended to stay only because it was easy meals at first, not because of the four vampires walking along the boardwalk. They each took their time visiting you, getting to know you on the rocks and sometimes bringing you gifts.
Dwayne made you a bracelet, and he made sure to fasten it tight around your wrist so the current wouldn't steal it. He would bring books to read to you, since he'd heard once that mermaids used to let sailors have safe passage if they told them stories. Either way, you liked to rest your head on his shoulder and listen to him. The two of you would hold hands, and the only sound was his voice and the waves.
David gave you an earring, and it was only then that he realized you didn't have pierced ears. You let him pierce it for you, and you found yourself playing with it from time to time. You and David would trade stories, each talking about the events that had happened in your long, long lives. You told him about all the different places you'd been, and how they each looked in sunlight
Paul introduced you to cassette tapes, but he couldn't give you any because of where you lived. He still made you some, and he would bring his portable cassette player with him whenever he went to visit you. Eventually, he brought an acoustic guitar with him one night. The two of you jammed on the rocks, unintentionally bringing in a meal for the two of you to share
Marko introduced you to art. He made various drawings of you, but you could never keep them. Marko was the first to swim with you. He grabbed his board and swam out to see you. The others were still a little hesitant, given what they'd seen you do to other swimmers and surfers. You'd climbed on his board with him, and the two of you had talked for hours. Given his trust in you, you placed your trust in him. You kissed him, and, after that, their visits became dates
The boys wanted to spend more time with you, show you the boardwalk, the cave, and just land overall. When Dwayne found something, a way for mermaids to come onto land, they had to try it.
The first time you'd experienced having legs, it had been weird. You were wobbly and clumsy, and they took turns teaching you how to walk. They dressed you in their clothes, mainly because you didn't have any of your own. You'd wanted to explore the cave, but kept tripping. Eventually, you found that it was much more fun to have them carry you or to sit in their laps.
When they finally deemed you ready for the boardwalk, you were in awe. You'd only ever seen places like this from a distance. It was full of so many new sights, smells, and people. The boys had you try human food, and you discovered that perhaps it wasn't completely terrible. Still, it was weird for you to eat something that wasn't meat. Marko and Paul totally had you try gross foods on purpose. Rides were both amazing and terrifying. Going on the ferris wheel took you to a height you'd never been before, and that was when the boys suggested taking you flying
A boy kept a hand on you at all times, just to make sure that you didn't trip or didn't get lost. All it would take was one person to spill their drink on you and you'd have a tail again. You didn't mind, and you leaned into them as you walked down the boardwalk. They circled you like four guard dogs, mainly because they didn't want anyone to expose your secret
After that, you pretty much became amphibious. You'd spend a few days in the water, a few days on land. Just so you could get the best of both worlds. The boys knew that you'd never give up your aquatic half, and they would never ask you to. Still, they treasured the nights they got to have you sleep in the little nest they had made you instead of on a rock somewhere.
Still, their favorite thing to do is fly above you as you attack a surfer. They place bets on how quickly it'll take you to drown them
