Who Am I?
I am a first generation Canadian who was born in North York but mainly raised in brampton. My cultural background is Indian. Both my parents were raised in Punjab, India but travelled to Canada with their own families at the ages of 7 and 20. I am going to be focusing my discussion on governance and technology between the years 2015 and 1984.
Technology in Punjab now vs. Technology in India in 1984
In Punjab technology is still very much developing. Punjab is a farming state many people live either in little towns surrounded by farm land or live on their own land where they farm for a living. With this being said electricity is on and off in the state of Punjab even today. In the past there was not any internet usage that was being used in the state of Punjab. In many places computers were just in bigger towns if there were any. Today technology isn’t just used with the government of punjab but is in every middle class families home in Punjab. The internet is the main source of where most of the news travels around Punjab and the rest of India making news a nation wide spread of information that may or may not be true
Khalsa Aid - Focus On Punjab
Khalsa Aid is a non-profit organization that was launched by founder Ravinder Singh Sidhu. Khalsa Aid provides support and relieve to areas who have been affected by natural disasters, and other unfortunate events. The Focus on Punjab Project is also another one of their locations that they work in. The Focus on Punjab project is for affected families of the 1984 battle between the indian government and Sikhs in Punjab. From the result of the battle many families were left with just the women and the men (who were the main bread winners) of their families were taken away or died in 1984 as a result. Khalsa Aid is helping families who are in need of new homes, educational support, and power inverters that will help provide electricity when power goes out in their village. Currently Khalsa Aid’s Focus on Punjab project has 250 affected families that they support.

So what exactly happened in 1984?
- On June 3rd, 1984 the Indian government had imposed a 36 hour strict crew few on the state of punjab. No one was to leave or enter the state. All buses from states around were told to avoid the Amritsar area completely and avoid leaving and entering punjab. Many were already suspicious of what will happen since riots and army men had been patrolling the outer grounds of the Golden Temple (Sikh’s holiest temple) for the past few days
- June 5, 1984: the morning of June 5th 1984 Sir Mark Tully (2014) writes “all journalists were moved out of the state of Punjab”. At about 10:30 pm the Indian Army goes in to attack the “Akal Takht” (stands opposite to the Golden Temple) This is where many committee members would stay and all other visitors who were staying the night would sleep.
- during the fight many Sikh’s who were in the Indian Army had rebelled to the demands that came from prime minister Indira Gandhi to get rid of all Sikhs.
- June 6, 1984: the 9 hour long battle between the Indian government and the Sikhs finally came to an end on the ground of the Golden Temple.
- June 12, 1984: reports stated that over 1000 people died during the 9 hour battle.

Khalsa Aid Today
Today Khalsa Aid has been acknowledged and spread world wide. Being a charity that started in the UK most of the advertising and promotion for the charity is done in the UK from posters, charity events, and even being acknowledged by the Prime Minister in the UK. Globally their charity is seen online from their website, youtube channel, or Instagram page.
UK based NGO Khalsa Aid’s extension Langar Aid has been set up in Pesh Harbour area, around 10km from the Syrian border and nearly 35km ..
If Social Media was used in 1984
As we saw in this module President Obama used Facebook to his advantage in his 2008 election campaign. In a Nielsen study “candidates most frequently mentioned in social media win elections 75% of the time.” In this case many people where actually very interested in watching the first African American person stand up and run for the President of the United States. For some social media users this was a platform to bring out all his negative qualities or things they didn’t approve of. For others President Obama was who they were idolizing at that very moment. Regardless Obama was all over social media. Now if we go back to 1984 and think about if social media was used then would the events of June 1984 happen? would the battle be done online? The even bigger question that could be asked was if the soldiers who switched sides during the battle leak information on social media? These are things that all could’ve happened if social media was used at the time. Although news reporters were taken out of the state of punjab could a simple tweet from a news reporter shut down the entire plan of the prime minister. Indira Ghandi was planning on running for prime minister in 1985 but if social media existed would people still vote for her if her name was being put out in a negative manner on social media?
