Khan...Genghis Khan
1218: I am Genghis Khan, ruler of the Mongols and conqueror of the world. I am having my words transcribed so that those who come after me may remember all that has happened to the Mongols, a history of them and of me. As I speak, we are at war with my enemy Kuchlug. He is a Naiman and the only one who currently poses a threat to the new found peace of the United Mongolian tribes. He must die. All for now.
All I want to do is trade
1217: While at war with Kuchlug, my army came in contact with the soldiers of Sultan Muhammad of Khwarazm. He is one of the most powerful leaders of our part of the world. He rules the West while I rule the East. I have no ill intentions against the Sultan for there is no reason for it. I simply wish to trade. It would be advantageous for both empires to acquire the goods and services of the other. I will simply offer him peace. Perhaps it will grant me my own piece of mind in this tumultuous time.
Time for War
1219: It has been some time since I last spoke and I am furious. The peace treaty is at an end. I will no longer hold back from fighting.
I send an envoy, I send my caravaners, simply for peace and yet they are slaughtered mercilessly.
I don’t know who Sultan Muhammad thinks he is to kill my envoys and caravaners but he is in for a rude awakening. He is no king. Now he will know that no one insults me and hurts my people and gets away with it. I’m done trying to be peaceful. Better call in the squad, war is coming
The Khwarazm-shah is no king, he is a bandit! If he were a king he would not have killed my merchants and my envoys who went to Otrar. Kings do not kill envoys
Genghis Khan
Ogodei: My successor...
I can’t leave my empire without a rightful successor before I go to war. I want Jochi to hold my title after I’m gone but... the circumstances on his birth are too vague. They wish me to appoint Ogodei, my sure eldest, generous and good but... will he be strong enough? The empire was built on blood and violence. My son may be a military man but will he have the strength of will and heart to keep it together? Tolui, my youngest and most militaristic child, is wild. Would he uphold everything the Mongols stand for? Can I have the same assurance that I have with Ogodei? I suppose only death will tell. Although extremely reluctantly... I claim Ogodei as my next successor. After I am dead and gone there will hopefully be no confusion, no war. I worked too hard for my sons to destroy the empire I built for them.
Divide and conquer
A tactic I find most useful is flaming mistrust and betrayal. If Muhammad does not believe he can trust even those closest to him, how will he ever win a war? Paranoia will drive him to be reckless. That is how we will gain our advantage. From what my scouts tell me, his forces have been thinned. We can pick them off one by one easily. He will never know what hit him.
Fall of Otrar
February 1220: After a long and bitter struggle, Otrar has finally fallen. The soldiers who attempted to flee like shadows in the night have all been executed. They betrayed those who they were sworn to defend and the master they swore to yield to. It is not something I will forgive, even if their master was my enemy. The man, Inal-Khan, who killed my caravaners out of paranoia has been killed. He was wicked until the end. I am glad he is dead. It is revenge for my people who didn’t deserve the death they were given. It’s time to move on. They don’t realize it, but a storm is coming.
The Fall of Bokhara
This city was not as difficult to capture. Less than one thousand Turkish troops remained and the people surrendered to us quickly. They have gone into our service. The city regretfully was burned. May this be a reminder, I do not put up with those who struggle, those who cause me a great loss. Now the Sultan knows what we are capable of. We can no longer be held back by cities and walls. Our time of vengeance has come. Time for another road trip. Off to Samarkand!
Changing the tide of war
March 1220: It’s been a long and exhausting few weeks but they have admittedly paid off. After a ten-day siege, the golden city of Samarkand is finally ours...
Admittedly, it was difficult to take the city. It was heavily fortified and large armies of Turks and Tadzhiks were stationed solely for its protection. Luckily, I share similar interests with some of the upper class of the city and they surrendered to me. Other inhabitants, I gave to my many trusted leaders. The bloodshed of those who can work is often unnecessary. However, after five days on a siege, those remaining Turks were massacred. They were my enemies, they had to go.
Now, after the fall of such a city to me, Sultan Muhammad is on the run. I’ve sent Jebe and Subodei to find him. He too will have to die eventually. In a way, it is sad to see such a greater leader fall so far. I have slaughtered his children, potential enemies to my reign, but his wives remain with us. It was unnecessary to maim such beauty. They were distributed amongst my men, my victors. A worthy prize for such fighting. For now, I am glad the siege has ended. I fear this is not the end of the fight but I go into the future with confidence and heaven’s blessing.
The new successor
1221: You would think that after Muhammad’s death things would be at least a little easier for my forces. Alas, life cannot be kind to rulers such as I. A man by the name of Jalal-ad-Din was named the Sultan’s successor before he died and now he has become an even bigger nuisance than his predecessor. For now, the man has fled to Afghanistan, no doubt plotting his vengeance. No doubt I’ll have to deal with him to secure my conquest in Khwarazm. On another note, My adopted son Khutukhu proved mildly disappointing when Jalal defeated him and a unit of Mongol soldiers under his command at Parwan. Can life throw me one small bone here?
One Job Khutukhu
Jalal al-Din: Doing my own dirty work
1221: Today is a small note. I’m sick of Jalal al-Din. It is time to end this with him. I’m heading out to catch him myself. The boys, Chaghatai, Ogodei, and Jochi are in charge of my forces left in Khwarazm while I’m gone. One ruler down, one to go.
