My Website!
Contact Card:
Another small thing I worked on was a contact card with all my socials as this was asked for in an application.
Becoming recognised on google:
At the beginning of the year I had a group discussion regarding our discoverability via google which got me to work.
The main thing I did to boost my google presence was my website. Adding all my social media links to my website, creating a domain name, and delving onto SEO tools helped me climb up the google search page.
And something interesting happened! A "Knowledge Graph" was created for me because of my film awards, and I was able to edit and add to this so now my website and social media is right at the top!
The job hunt begins:
Over the past month I've been regularly checking for job listings and applying to ones relevant to me. While many don't respond and other send a rejection email, I have had one success thus far and will be interviewed.
While it's good to have high hopes, I'm also open to simply having a learning experience which I can take foward to another job interview.
Cover Letter Template:
Another thing I encountered during my job hunt is the need of a cover letter, so to make it more convenient I created a template for myself in which I would only change the company’s name and address as well as the last paragraph explaining my knowledge and interest in that specific role.
CV Update:
I decided to make my simplistic CV stand out and be more professional, taking advice from careerset.
Website Update:
I decided to update my websites home page to showcase all the works I’ve done rather than just my illustration work as many jobs I’ve looked into are more Graphic Design based.
With this addition I also made each clickable image change to black and white as well as stating what page it will lead to. This makes my website that bit more interactive and stand out to employers.
I definitely prefer this update as its both simplistic yet holds more information than previously.
Final thoughts:
With my project complete for hand in, what have I learnt?
The main thing I learnt was how long it takes to create on fully coloured and lined comic page, for me it took 4-7 hours per page which is significantly more than I expected. I’m glad I now know this as I can more appropriately plan my schedule if I were to continue creating comics in the future, and creating so many pages has given me the ability to draw faster.
I also learnt how to format comics both in the panels and the speech, this is a skill I got from my LinkedIn learning courses.
I also developed my graphic design and photoshop skills through my main comic cover and promotional images I created.
So, what’s next?
For my career path I initially plan to work a Illustrator or Graphic Design job to build my cv and gain experience. Also for now I would like to have a stable job and income. This said, I would like to continue working on my webcomic in my free time and hopefully build an audience which can lead to Webtoons AD Revenue Sharing Program.
Webcomic thumbnails:
To Intrigue viewers to read my webtoon I have created a square thumbnail showing my two main characters, where as the vertical thumbnail will be my cover I have previously painted.
Promo Images:
A quick photoshoot and a little editing in both photoshop and lightroom has produced these promotional images of my webcomic “Love You, Love Me” showing viewers that it is a digital comic accessible on multiple devices.
Final cover:
I have finished my comic cover which shows my two main character while incorporating the yellow and purple theme.
Graphic novel mock-up:
I finished my book cover and created a mock-up to see what it would look like.
Final stages of the project:
I have decided I will be focusing on a webcomic as I realistically don’t have the time to print and bind a physical copy.
What’s next?:
Although I won’t be creating a physical copy for my hand in, I still planning on creating one after my hand in.
I also plan to submit half of my comic fully rendered, and the other half sketched so you can still grasp the story. However after the hand in I want to continue working on this comic, completing the remaining pages which will be printed into a book and shown for my graduation show.
Physical book:
Throughout this project I’ve been inspired by the graphic novel “heartstopper” by Alice Oseman. One thing I particularly liked what the size and formatting, so I took the dimensions to use for my own.
I will use a3 120gsm matt paper for the internal pages, folding them in half and cutting down to size. And for the cover I will use a3 300gms matte photo paper, using gloss acrylic varnish spray with a stencil to add sections of gloss.
I also made a mock book so I could figure out the order of printing as I will be folding paper in half.
Comments on final stages:
The main change during this project was the format it would be in. In my proposal, I planned on creating an interactive graphic novel that when scanned, would link to an online webcomic. I decided to focus on just the webcomic portion for my major project, the main reason for this being the time limit I was under.
I am surprised at the time and dedication it takes to create just one page of a fully coloured comic, previously assuming it would take me under a month to complete the illustration portion. However I found out each page takes me 3 - 6 hours to fully line, colour, and add text. This knowledge is beneficial to me now with my intention of pursuing webcomics as a career as I can better determine how long a project will take me to complete without facing the threat of burnout.
Here shows my process of the initial page sketch, lineart, and the fully coloured comic page.
Accordion Book:
I worked on a accordion style book, creating a long illustration and adding it to my hardback cover bound with book cloth with a sleeve as a final touch.
Book binding:
I joined a book binding tutorial at The University Of Portsmouth! Here are my results!
Curiosity Zine:
I worked on a joint zine, scanning ink drawings and collages into a printer. Combining two images into one, they were then monochrome printed in red and blue.
