@kickabel
you have to be kinder to people with memory issues.
you have to be kinder to people who are slow processors.
you have to be kinder to people who don't understand your jokes.
you have to be kinder to people who forget important dates.
you have to be kinder to people with cognitive decline.
you have to be kinder to people who were always this way, too.
you have to be kind. you have to be kind.
drug addicts deserve housing, food, water, and healthcare btw
this is what healthcare is like as a disabled person
speaking of r slur shit i see people using the word then backtracking saying “i can reclaim it because i’m autistic :)” like i don’t think you can actually. because the r slur directly targets people with intellectual disabilities not someone who took the raads-r online and scored slightly within range of being on the spectrum SORRY
As far as I'm concerned the r slur can never be reclaimed. My little sisters were diagnosed with "profound mental retardation" in 2003 and 2007 respectively, and they cannot speak. They're still here, they're alive and young. This was not long ago. It's true that a lot of people with autism were also diagnosed as retarded in the past before doctors discovered/created autism, but they aren't the only people diagnosed retarded. A good amount of the people who are? They can't speak for themselves. They have no say.
When it comes to reclaiming slurs among black and LGBT folks, they may not all agree, but they all get a say. That cannot be and will never be the case with "retard." A lot of people with intellectual disabilities do not speak or comprehend language.
Back in the early days of special education here in the United States, children deemed retarded were sorted into two different groups in schools and institutions and were treated accordingly: "educable" and "trainable." These autistic folks reclaiming the r word? They'd be "educable." They have no business speaking for the trainables.
people hate it when i say "black people getting cancer is racist" but im literally fucking right because systemic racism has led to chemical dumping being acceptable in black/brown neighborhoods and black people have higher rates of cancer as a result
"we have to accept the fact that the r word is coming back" NO WE DONTTTT NO WE DONT

health isn't a virtue.
people still go around acting like they've done something good in order to be able bodied and healthy. that they worked for it, that it's due to their moral fibre or good upbringing or self control. they genuinely, on some level, believe that they are a good person solely based on the strength of their physical abilities. they will resist the fact that it is largely down to chance that they were able to maintain such health. whatever they think they've built from scratch, the building blocks were already handed to them. not because they're more worthy of it, just by luck. and they really think they're worth more based on that sheer luck. i've met disabled people worth a hundred of the healthiest ableds alive.
Ignoring luck is dumb, but claiming that health is entirely based on sheer luck is an extremely corrosive worldview. There are dozens of choices you make every day, every week, every month that contribute to your overall health and functioning. It's good to be healthy and it's good to make healthy choices and you do in fact have a lot of control over whether you are able bodied.
Health being up to luck entirely may be too far, but it's pretty fucking close.
Just some, but certainly not all, of the factors on health outside of one's control:
• Your genes (what illnesses/conditions run in your family)
• Whether you have an "addictive personality" (goes hand in hand with the above)
• Whether you are fat (many factors beyond daily habits go into weight such as your genes, and if you happen to be fat, medical fatphobia will supersede any other health issue you have, far more likely to be misdiagnosed, missed, or neglected)
• The country you live in (what resources are available to you, what viruses are in your area, etc.)
• The precise area you live in (environmental racism, are you in a low income area where environmental toxins threaten your health? Are the only jobs in your area the local mine?)
• The insurance you have
• The wealth to afford healthy food, gym memberships, supplements, treatment, etc. (do you live in a food desert? do you even have time to cook your meals?)
• The job you have (do you work in a factory where you are more likely to be injured? Exposed to chemicals, work in a mine, etc. situation that gradually poisons you?)
• Whether you happen to bounce back from illnesses or end up disabled by them, like the case of long COVID?
• Minority status (are you a woman who is seemed hysterical by doctors? Are you a woman with a condition that mostly affects women and is therefore understudied? Are you black, where racist medical myths like higher pain tolerance still exist? Are you a black woman, much more likely to die during childbirth?)
• Are there abusive people in your life? Sometimes this is in your control (an adult that can cut people off), sometimes you're a child with an abusive parent. Sometimes parents make decisions that disable you as early as pregnancy.
To say you have a lot of control over whether you are able-bodied is pretty fucking delusional, to be honest. There's incredible athletes that you would consider the pinnacle of health that go to the gym one day, make a small equipment mistake, and suddenly they're disabled for life. We're incredibly fragile beings. All it takes is a split second and you can become paralyzed.
This isn't about trying to say you have no control over your health or that it isn't worth making healthy choices. It's about how judging others is fucking ridiculous.
imma make posts introducing each of my sisters with their lore and stats eventually
once I went to give sammy (nonverbal autistic sister) a snack and I looked at what she was watching on her tablet expecting her usual yo gabba gabba or sesame street comfort shows but she was actually watching body count (ice-t's metal band) play "cop killa" live

submissive anti-ableist bus
auto immune disorders happen when the immune system ignores regulatory factors and begins attacking healthy bodily tissues, due to what scientists refer to as "sheer love of the game"
tiktok I made that didn't do that good but I think this is the right audience
sexism in medicine kills people. racism in medicine kills people. fatphobia in medicine kills people. queerphobia in medicine kills people. classism in medicine kills people. ableism in medicine kills people.
do not downplay people’s fears about being mistreated because they are a part of a marginalised group. it is a matter of life and death and you should be angry about it.
One of my most radical and alienating takes is that doctors are just health cops. I've pissed people off saying this before. The Hippocratic oath is fucking bullshit. The ethical standard is garbage. Doctors are just folks who get to arbitrate which bodies are or are not normative, worthy of treatment, and/or worthy of study (how little do we know about women's health?).
And if my daring to do anything other than mindlessly glaze this cruel establishment touted as our supposed saviors offends you? I don't fucking care anymore.
How many plugs have to be pulled? How many insurance claims denied? How many women accused of faking? Munchausens? How many Tuskeegee experiments? How many racial myths (like black people not feeling pain)? How many disabled folks abandoned? How much medical neglect? How many more black mothers have to die in child birth?
Fuck doctors. I'll say it with my whole chest. I'm a caretaker. I nurse people through seizures and change diapers every day. I'm considered low skill labor. Yet some fuckface doctor who walks from hospital room to hospital room, without ever getting his hands dirty, giving people a once over and making split second calls that alter entire lives with little second thought is touted and glorified as a hero.
