A new “golden age” in journalism.
Storyteller’s new MOJO
Have you heard of MOJO? No, I'm not talking about when Austin Powers lost his mojo to Dr. Evil, I'm talking about MOJO.
MOJO or Mobile journalism has become a new way to release media content to the world. Mobile journalism is an emerging form of storytelling where reporters use portable electronic devices to gather, edit and distribute news from his or her community. Simply put, MOJO, is a combination of digital storytelling skills and tools used to capture and transform raw user-generated content into complete user-generated stories.
Who is considered the journalist? Your innocent bystander who watched said event or the traditional news outlet who also reported the story. Considering, MOJO is all done right in your hand, anyone can be a "journalist".
Glen Mulcahy a mobile journalist/blogger and Innovations chief at Ireland’s RTE network, calls this form of journalism the “purist view.”
“Mobile journalism is about empowering the individual storyteller to use whatever consumer technology they have available to them to make the best possible visual story that they can…” said Mulcahy.
When starting out MOJO's must decide where they chose to release their stories and pictures. Without a traditional news outlet, it is harder to push the story and promote it, but by building a social media following it helps to get your stories out in the world.
With technology on the rise, people have access to certain tools to tell a good story. People use their iPhones and Androids for their user-friendly-feel. There are also, microphone and camera extensions available for your phone to help for better images and audio quality, you can also get editing software's straight to your phone for easy access. Although all these can add to a MOJO's success, does your phone and all these extra gadgets really do the trick?
A journalist first job is to be a modern-day storyteller. As a reporter it is our duty to seek and report the truth and to be balanced. While studying to become a journalist you learn many things, how to write, tell stories, record video and how to properly make an image. Key elements in making the modern story teller.
MOJO's can be anyone, meaning some people may not have the education others do, meaning sometimes we are laying the "truth" in the hands of under qualified people.
Twitter and Journalism
At one point, people had laughed at it, they said be careful of all the bogus information spread out on that platform. Now they use it every day.
Twitter has changed the way people get and view our news. Founded in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, it has now become one of the largest social media platforms in the world. Twitter has given people a way to connect by tweeting, following people from all around the world and making it easy to share with multiple people. It isn't just for tweeting and sending funny videos to your friends, Twitter has become a successful tool to a journalist.
Virtually the whole world uses Twitter, celebrities, political figures, and ordinary people all sharing personal and helpful updates. Social media has helped to transform newsrooms, giving them access to easy news-gathering, and a wide range of sources. Some would suggest it is "lazy" for a journalist to rely on Twitter for news, but it has insightful information. Giving us access to breaking news and the different things that happens in the community, the people who witnessed it, tweet about it. It's up to the journalist to follow people and dig deeper into the situation to uncover the truth, Twitter is becoming a new source for developing new stories.
By listening to the community conversation.
Following people and important organizations of the community, update you quickly on what's happening. When you're checking your tweets, you might see one that presents a good story idea or multiple tweets of something becoming a hot topic. Following important government and political figures on Twitter is good for gathering quotes; although a downside of social media is you must watch how people perceive themselves, they often try and bring out their better self. It is a good way to search for sources and help to continue the conversation.
Yes, it may be another social media platform with downsides of people who distribute fake news and fake personas on the web. You may also find yourself getting lost through different tweets, and articles but Twitter has still become crucial in the world of online journalism.
Journalist have recognized the value of Twitter by sharing stories with followers, and it helping to bump up their traffic. Making it easy to distribute content, respond to follower's questions, and share news, it is a fun place. Twitter has truly marked its place within the journalism community.
Social Media; it isn’t the worst thing
They say it is making us anti-social, for most it is their main source of news. Social media has grown bigger than anyone had imagined, and is it really that bad?
Social media has become part of our everyday lives, without us even knowing. It slowly slipped into our fingertips and connected us with the world. Making it easier to communicate and share information with people and keeping us up to date with society.
It was meant to connect us; human beings are social creatures and thrive off one and other. With such a large platform there is no telling who you might reach, these outlets were made to help people create a voice for themselves and help build relationships. Pew Research Center released a "Social Media Fact Sheet" on February 5, 2018. The sheet showed that 88% of people ages, 18-29 used at least one social media page.
The youth demographic has the largest exposure to social media.
It has become the easiest way to gather information and knowledge about your community. For young people, it is considered a "helpful source", exposing people to news at a young age will help benefit them in the future to make good conscious decisions about their everyday lives. Social media has given us access to the world at our fingertips making it easier for people to be exposed to the news. To be aware and informed of what is going on, no matter where you are, is very important and social media has made itself the easiest way to obtain that information.
Although it may have downsides, once people start reading they fall into a "rabbit hole" where they cannot stop, and hours pass without them noticing. Also, the fake news epidemic has risen, and many people cannot tell the difference between real and fake. Many different sites are looking to enforce consequence for fake news but for now it will continue to play its part.
Whether you like it, or not social media is on the rise and here to stay. Giving us the biggest platform to express ourselves and share information with endless people, it is the best source to help you stay aware of the world and what exactly is going on around you.
