Have you heard of MOJO? No, I'm not talking about when Austin Powers lost his mojo to Dr. Evil, I'm talking about MOJO.
MOJO or Mobile journalism has become a new way to release media content to the world. Mobile journalism is an emerging form of storytelling where reporters use portable electronic devices to gather, edit and distribute news from his or her community. Simply put, MOJO, is a combination of digital storytelling skills and tools used to capture and transform raw user-generated content into complete user-generated stories.
Who is considered the journalist? Your innocent bystander who watched said event or the traditional news outlet who also reported the story. Considering, MOJO is all done right in your hand, anyone can be a "journalist".
Glen Mulcahy a mobile journalist/blogger and Innovations chief at Ireland’s RTE network, calls this form of journalism the “purist view.”
“Mobile journalism is about empowering the individual storyteller to use whatever consumer technology they have available to them to make the best possible visual story that they can…” said Mulcahy.
When starting out MOJO's must decide where they chose to release their stories and pictures. Without a traditional news outlet, it is harder to push the story and promote it, but by building a social media following it helps to get your stories out in the world.
With technology on the rise, people have access to certain tools to tell a good story. People use their iPhones and Androids for their user-friendly-feel. There are also, microphone and camera extensions available for your phone to help for better images and audio quality, you can also get editing software's straight to your phone for easy access. Although all these can add to a MOJO's success, does your phone and all these extra gadgets really do the trick?
A journalist first job is to be a modern-day storyteller. As a reporter it is our duty to seek and report the truth and to be balanced. While studying to become a journalist you learn many things, how to write, tell stories, record video and how to properly make an image. Key elements in making the modern story teller.
MOJO's can be anyone, meaning some people may not have the education others do, meaning sometimes we are laying the "truth" in the hands of under qualified people.
