“Thank you, Ki, you don’t understand how much it means for me to have your support. This is all so nerve wracking I feel like I’m going to puke or explode confetti,” Lia laughed, burying her face in her hands. She shook her head and then took a deep breath before lifting her gaze again. Her eyes widened to the size of saucer plates and she started jumping in place. “ Shut up! Are you for real right now? Yes! I’d be honored! Did you have something in mind? I’ll do it!”
The sight of Dahlia jumping in place only cause Kiera to break into a fit of giggles. She nodded in silence with a big smile on her face, assuring the other girl that she wasn’t joking. “I’m dead serious,” she managed to say through soft chuckles. “I haven’t really thought about it, but i do want something cute. Nothing too cliche though -- any ideas?”
Her mouth snapped shut at Kiera’s harsh tone. She knew that her sister was mad and she didn’t blame her. Grace would be livid if she found out Kiera had kept something like this from her. Instead of arguing, Grace stepped forward and pulled her sister into a tight hug. “Yeah, I did,” she murmured into the younger girl’s hair. “But I’m also right here and I’m fine.” Grace could feel Kiera shaking and she wasn’t sure if it was from anger or if she was trying not to cry. Either way, Grace knew she had no real words for her and a hug was the best comfort she could offer. The best reminder she could give that she was still here and she hadn’t gone anywhere.
Kiera felt too weak to even move away from Grace’s embrace. Despite it being days since she found out, through a stupid phone call from the hospital, the news of her sister’s heart condition still stung. It was too much for her to accept -- her older sister, someone she once and still look up to, dealing with a condition and wanting to keep it a secret to face it alone made no sense. It puzzled Kiera, and questioned her on their relationship. She was mad. She was mad, hurt, but she was too terrified. She stood there with her hands kept on her sides, and for a minute she wanted to wrap them around Grace; but her stubbornness took over. “You got lucky,” Kiera argued, taking a step back and pushing the other away so her hands were no long attempting to comfort her. She didn’t need comfort, she needed assurance. “You’re not fine, you just got fucking lucky.”
"How long?” Kiera demanded for an answer. “How long, Grace? How long have you kept this from us -- fuck, from me?”
She didn’t feel fireworks go off in her chest when she first met him. He didn’t fall for her at first sight. Love was never a part of the question. He gave her a shoulder to cry on when her boyfriend broke her heart. She stood by his side through every monster he was too scared to face. This was what they were. She knew his habits like the back of her hand. He could make her laugh even on her darkest nights. They were perfect. He began to hear her voice as a lullaby. She could no longer imagine anyone else by her side. They found love slowly.

So you might love him and it doesn’t hurt you and that scares you. And when he kisses you he doesn’t draw blood so sometimes you do it yourself Because you think love is supposed to hurt And you don’t recognize love when love looks like sunflowers dressed in their Sunday best. So sometimes when he’s asleep next to you, You’re looking for reasons to yell—for dishes to break—for a little piece of heartbreak to make the love taste more real Because the last boy swore pain was just another word for foreplay And you believed him, didn’t you? And you wanted to believe him, didn’t you? And that’s okay. But now, you need to unlearn the hurt. Unlearn the love you know and re-build it out of sunflowers— Let him kiss you softly and just hold you through the night. Let yourself be held through the night. Eventually, sunflowers. Eventually, love And only love.

I will remember your small room, the feel of you, the light in the window, your records, your books, our morning coffee, our noons, our nights, our bodies spilled together, sleeping, the tiny flowing currents, immediate and forever. Your leg, my leg, your arm, my arm, your smile and the warmth of you who made me laugh again.

We were lying in your bed; your arm around my waist, my fingers intertwining with yours, and in that moment, I swore we could have been more than what we downplayed ourselves to be. Maybe more than just good company, maybe more than friends, maybe closer to the road of could-be-lovers - just a little more than what don’t say.

“I don’t remember asking you,” Blake teased in a soft voice. He pressed a few more buttons before holding the camera back up, snapping a picture as Kiera rolled the hem of her shirt. “Got one. You know, I should’ve assumed I’d never get that shirt back. Do you ever sleep in your own clothing?” He smirked at her before looking down at the picture he’d taken. This was so normal for them that it was almost weird. No title had ever been established, but they’d never really needed one. Blake set his camera down next to him, laying down so that his head was in her lap. “And you’d think you study whining with how good you are at it.”
She scrunched her face and shot him a look, shaking her head in response to his smart rhetorical question. “I like your shirts better,” she beamed brightly, “plus, i look better in them. You put them to shame.” She straightened her legs and buried them under the sheets, smiling as she watched Blake climb back into bed. Lazy mornings, tossing and turning in bed was one of Kiera’s favourite things; and though she might not admit it out loud, being with Blake and doing all those things, as well as just his presence alone, were among them. “Shut up,” she muttered, a hand naturally finding itself locked and lost into the boy’s dark curls, while her eyes wandered directly into his. “You wouldn’t dare to shut me up.”
“I thought,” Blake paused, fingers fiddling with buttons on his new camera, “that the sales description for this camera said ‘easy to use’. Easy to use my ass.” He held the camera up, trying to focus it for a decent picture. “This shit is impossible.”
“Now, now,” Kiera began to tease with her head tilted to the side, a small amused smile playing on her lips as she gave out a soft chuckle, “don’t go blaming the camera for your own stupidity.” She buried and wiggled her toes deep into the sheets she stood on, fiddling and rolling the hem of the over-sized shirt with her hands, revealing her laced undergarment and long legs while she tried to occupy herself as Blake figured his new toy out. She eventually grew tired, and sat herself back down on their bed. “You’re impossible,” she whined, “how are you unable to operate a God damn camera? You study film!”
“You’re joking, right?” Dahlia raised an eyebrow at the other girl and crossed her arms over her chest. “Do you really think you’d be able to keep me away when that happens?” She laughed with her easily. The excitement filled every fiber of her being and it was noticeable from the way she was practically bouncing in place. “Can you believe this is actually happening? Also, you’re the best.”
"You worked so hard for this Lia, i’d be damned if all this isn’t real,” Kiera continued to laugh. She was excited for Dahlia’s success and the milestone she had took after her hard work and effort. “I’m so proud of you, you deserve all of this,” she encouraged, tilting her head as she look at Dahlia with nothing but admiration. “You know what, i think i may just let you be the first to ink me.”
“I wish everyone would stop looking at me like i’m about to fall apart … I just got out of the hospital, I’m not coming back from the grave or something,” Grace huffed as she fiddled with the ends of her still-pink hair. The color was fading and pretty soon she’d be faced with a decision – re-dye it or go back to being blonde. It was something silly to be focusing on, but she’d rather focus on that than all the hovering her mother and others had been doing since her minor heart attack and stay at the hospital. Secret was out: Grace Hudson has a heart defect.
“Grace, don’t you fucking dare.” Kiera didn’t know which angered her most: the part where her sister decides it’s a joke to play her incident off lightly, or the part where she failed to inform her about her heart condition. It made her wonder about a lot of things. In fact, it caused her to stay up the entire night during Grace’s first night of admission. How long did she hide from her? How long was she planing to? And what if she wasn’t lucky? "You had a heart attack.” Her words shook when she said it and she could her heart rate speeding up just slightly. Kiera didn’t know how to feel. Sure, she’s angry and it’s the only thing she could feel at the moment, but she too is worried sick and terrified under all that ball of anger.
“so my tattoo shop is finally opening up this weekend – am i gonna be seeing you there or what?”
"That depends,” Kiera teased with her head held high, “are you going to be at the launching event of my new clothing series in return?” She laughed it off. “I’ll drop by with food and make sure you’re all spoiled from working day and night.”
