The Virgin Suicides (1999) - dir. Sofia Coppola
What started off being an incredibly strong debut of a female filmmaker ended up being the true emergence of Kirsten Dunst as an actress and sex symbol. The film is, in its own way, perfect. Sure, it’s a little much of what it is, but the care and fastidiousness Coppola brings to the table eventually wins out.
Dunst, on the other hand, is breathtaking from the word go. The rest of the sisters really never stack up (proving to be the film’s biggest flaw), to the buxom Lux Lisbon. Also. the film has one of the greatest lines in any film ever - and I mean that sincerely - when Josh Hartnett leans over and says, “you’re a stone fox.”

We rip out so much of ourselves to be cured of things faster, that we go bankrupt by the age of thirty, and have less to offer each time we start with someone new. But, to make yourself feel nothing, so as not to feel anything… What a waste. Call Me By Your Name (2017) dir. Luca Guadagnino

under the silver lake (dir. david robert mitchell, 2018)
mining a noir tradition extending from “kiss me deadly” and “the long goodbye” to “chinatown'’ and ’‘mulholland drive”, mitchell uses the topography of los angeles as a backdrop for a deeper exploration into the hidden meaning and secret codes buried within the things we love.
We’re afraid that we will never escape our past. We’re afraid of what the future will bring. We’re afraid we won’t be loved, we won’t be liked. And we won’t succeed.
