His arms wrap themselves around her, loose, but they cover her.  He wishes he were alive, wishes he could be warm for her in this moment. He supposes it would all be the same to her. “Fuck off,” he snorts, nose wrinkling at the thought. “My French Maid says are behind me,” he shoots back. He gets it, if anyone would, wanting not to shoot words too close to the source of the pain. So he doesn’t, not unless she goes there first.

          ember lets her head fall to his shoulder , heavily lidded eyes almost shut beneath the smeared remnants of her eye makeup , as a laugh ripples from her throat. it’s hoarser than normal , but not as terrible as it has been.     “  c’mooooon. not even for me?  ”     tongue slicking over teeth , she walks chipped nails along the hard line of his collarbone.     “  what a rip off. i’m taking you back to ghost walmart and exchanging you.  ”

         she wouldn’t be here , wouldn’t be out waaaaay past her curfew with billy hargrove of all people , if she didn’t want to be here. if she didn’t want to be around him. if she didn’t like spending her time with him. there’s a half dozen other if statements to go along with those       a half dozen statements that say the same thing in different ways. he’s all impulse , all go go go , to her overly cautious stand-still sort of life. he does what makes him feel good without considering what sort of trouble it could , and would inevitably , get him into. get them into because she’s here with him rather than tucked into bed like her parents , like everyone who so much as knows her , think she is. 

he’s seen her naked , but a wave of heat still creeps up the pale column of her throat and into her cheeks beneath the weight of his stare. it makes her look away , throat working and teeth chewing her lower lip against the nervous grin tugging there. her fingers trace the neckline of her sundress , curling over it and tugging at it as she drags her gaze back to billy ; half naked , belt dangling while he fiddles with the zipper. 

“  one of us has to worry.  ”     it’s lame , but it’s true. she makes up for it in the dip of a shoulder that sends a strap slipping down her arm. the other follows suit , dress slipping lower while arms keep her covered. she backs away from him , kicking one loosely tied converse off and then the other       dress easing down her body until its pooled around her ankles.     “  for instance , i’m worried about why you’re still not naked.  ”
