Blue Nile Cafe, Woolwich, Greenwich, London, SE18

The new jewel in Woolwich's diverse food scene is Eritrean/Italian restaurant, Blue Nile Cafe. A former sausage-making shop, the aged interior has been restored to create something a little more Shoreditch than Woolwich. The menu has a mix of Italian and Eritrean classics, harking back to Eritrea’s colonial history, from Italian coffees, pasta and ice-creams to Eritrean ‘kemem’ tea, warm ‘ful’, meat stews and ‘himbasha’.

Greenwich Market, Greenwich, London, SE10 

Greenwich's covered market is full of treats and treasures, from antiques and art to food and drink. It's right in the centre of Greenwich, and open Tuesday to Sunday, 10.00-17.30.

Ride the front of the DLR

There aren't many enjoyable journeys you'll have on public transport in London but the DLR does have its perks. Running on ground level, the Docklands Light Railway is an automated metro rail service that offers spectacular views of east London, taking in the River Thames, Canary Wharf and The O2. As there's no driver, try and nab the front row for the best seats. There are two stations in Greenwich (Greenwich, Cutty Sark) and one at Woolwich Arsenal giving access to east London and the City.

Up at The O2, Greenwich Peninsular, Greenwich, London, SE10

Yet another thing to do if you visit the ever-expanding Greenwich Peninsular. Book into Base Camp and get kitted up for your attempt on the summit of The O2. Take the walkway over the top of the domed roof and pause on the top for a 360 degree viewing platform, offering spectacular views of the skyscrapers in Docklands and the Olympic Park across the Thames.

Emirates Air Line, Greenwich Peninsular, Greenwich, London, SE10

If you're at The O2 or ExCeL Centre, then take a trip on Emirates Air Line, a cable car crossing the River Thames in east London. The journey takes about five minutes and costs £3.20 for an adult and £1.60 for a child if you buy with a pay as you go Oyster Card. Nearest stations to the terminals are North Greenwich on the Jubilee Line or Royal Victoria on the DLR.

Oxlea Wood Cafe, Shooters Hill, Greenwich, London, SE18 Nestled in Oxlea Wood at the top of Shooters Hill, Oxlea Wood Cafe is a great place to go for breakfast at the weekend. Once you've refueled, you can walk it off by exploring the woods, a site of special scientific interest, that forms part of London's Green Chain walk.

Cutty Sark, Greenwich, London, SE10

Following an extensive refurb following a fire in 2007, the Cutty Sark, once the fastest tea clipper on the water reopened in 2012 and looks incredible.

Greenwich Foot Tunnel South Entrance, Greenwich, London, SE10 Sir Alexander Binnie's Greenwich Foot Tunnel crosses beneath the River Thames between the Isle of Dogs and Greenwich. The glass-domed southern entrance to the tunnel is located next to the refurbished Cutty Sark clipper in the centre of Greenwich, close to the Cutty Sark DLR station and next to Greenwich Pier where the Thames Clippers river buses stop.

St George's Chapel, Woolwich, Greenwich, London, SE18

This church was heavily bombed in WW2 but is still used today by the Royal Artillery Regiment for open air services. Thanks to £400K raised, it is soon to be restored, but is impressive even without the roof. Culture Minister Ed Vaizey said it had "magnificent mosaics" and who are we to argue. It's a short walk from Woolwich Arsenal Rail Station.

Woolwich Market is not the prettiest but has a certain charm and is always full of people and stuff.

Slice of Reality, Greenwich Peninsular, Greenwich, London, SE10

Richard Wilson (I don't think it's the same one) has sliced a boat into sections and moored the bridge part behind The O2 on the Greenwich Peninsular for this art installation.

The Victoria, Charlton, Greenwich, London, SE7

One of my favourite buildings in London, this derelict pub has seen better days but has a real charm and an incredible eagle above the front door. It's close to the Thames Barrier and Charlton Athletic's The Valley home.

Severndroog Castle, Shooters Hill, Greenwich, London, SE18

This eighteenth-century gothic tower was built by a heartbroken widow in a clearing, high on Shooters Hill, in Oxleas Wood. It's on London's Green Chain walk, close to Eltham and is an unexpected treat.

Royal Observatory, Greenwich, London, SE10

Home of Greenwich Mean Time and officially the centre of the World. The Royal Observatory is in Greenwich Park and is well worth the treck up the hill from Greenwich, or across the heath from Blackheath. It offers one of London's best views, looking over to Canary Wharf and the City.

Assembly, Woolwich Arsenal, Woolwich, Greenwich, London, SE18

There are some cool Anthony Gormley-style cast-iron figure sculptures by the Thames Clipper pier at Royal Woolwich Arsenal. They look even better at night with the lights of Canary Wharf in the background.

Woolwich Ferry, Woolwich, Greenwich, SE18

The Woolwich Ferry is a free car ferry which travels between North Woolwich and Woolwich. It links the north and south circular roads across the Thames and provides great views looking West towards the city.

Thames Barrier, Woolwich, Greenwich, London, SE18

The Thames Barrier is the world's second-largest movable flood barrier and despite being opened in 1984, still looks pretty futuristic and spectacular today. Try and catch it when the barrier is fully closed.
