god, there is so much to digest about we are all trying here's ending. and i will digest it, over the coming weeks, months, and maybe years, because this was never a drama meant to be watched in one sitting with you kicking your feet. it is a drama meant to be understood, deeply, and overall, a billboard sign from the writer park haeyoung to her own industry saying to protect art, protect our words, protect writers, protect poetry, protect what makes us human, no matter how much we remain failures, no matter if AI comes and erases us, no matter if we don't make $1 from it, that mark we leave will touch someone's heart.
these are not characters you make edits of. this is not a drama that'll land a subway CF in it. this is a drama that asks its audience to be smart and think about the dialogue and what each character represents.
hwang dongman may be the most complex male lead i have seen in a kdrama, perhaps ever. you root for him, you are embarrassed for him, you cry for him, you want to bang his head into the ground and stitch him right back up at the same time. and the three characters closest to his heart - eunah, jinman, and gyeongse, all represent each emotion within him. the anxiety of wanting to protect his brother, the unwavering support of eunah his soulmate, and the love/hate with him and gyeongse, who are somehow each other's muse and yet downfall, is just written so. goddamn. well.
at the end of the day, dongman's movie plot did not matter. we could gather it was something scifi, something melodramatic, something, something. but it moved those closest to him. he fought his worthlessness with his own words at the end, with his own humor. and i think that's what the drama was getting at; the scene between jinman and dongman, where he tells his brother i want to live humorously. i want to find HUMOR in the unrelenting pain and depression of our lives.......that is how we win. that is how we live, until the weather changes. like eunah's last dialogues say, how i wish i can live my whole life watching every terrible thing be comedic with you who makes it a comedy. weather maker hwang dongman's eternal spring; may it blossom over everyone who sat with this drama for these past weeks.
