Continuing to listen to Asahi, Oikawa nodded.

“Yeah…you were scared of a lot to begin with. You’re getting better though, you did so well!” The smaller werewolf said with pride, as if he had raised the other himself.

“If someone had tried to pet me when I had just shifted for the first time, I’d probably have bitten them.” He laughed.

“Well I, ah, I knew it was you so…I didn’t want to hurt you, I was pretty scared to.” He admitted quietly, cheeks a bit flushed a the other’s compliments, feeling a little better knowing he thought he’d done good, that he was even proud of him for such a simple thing.

“Besides i-it felt nice.” He added after a moment. “It startled me a little at first, when you did that, but then it helped me relax a little easier.”

"I mean," he started, thinking of whether to word his sentences in such a way to make it a question, or a statement; "we could always go outside when you feel more comfortable with it. I mean, it's your choice." He said with a little shrug, furrowing his brows a little, "I won't force you, so don't worry."

“Yep” Oikawa smiled, “I learned a lot about you from observing you like that.”

He continued to listen to Asahi’s flustered-sounding speech, deciding to make some other remarks on how cute the larger wolf was, “The cutest I’ve seen…you really like that toy rabbit a lot? You’d barely let me touch it.” He said, laughing softly and gripping Asahi’s hand to hopefully assure him that he wasn’t mocking the other’s behaviour.

“Ah, w-well yeah, I really like it actually, it…it helped me feel a little more relaxed.” He admitted a little sheepishly, glancing around and seeking the little toy out without even realizing it, tugging it out from between the sheets where it’d ended up at some point. He hadn’t even realized how defensive he’d gotten over it, but was honestly relieved that Oikawa wasn’t mocking him for it.

“I knew you weren’t going to take it, obviously.” He added after a moment, flashing him a soft smile. “I didn’t even know I could be playful like that, I guess, I was always too scared to do a lot on my own.”

“Oh?” Oikawa paused briefly before eventually fully processing what the other werewolf had said, “I don’t mind at all, I hope you didn’t feel forced into anything, and you were much braver than I was when I was in your position”.

The smaller wolf tensed slightly at Asahi gently squeezing his hand, but soon relaxed when he was fully aware of the situation. He smiled, hoping to calm the timid other down, even if just a little, and he spoke quietly;

“You got playful, it was cute.”

“Cute, really? Even…even though I was like that, you thought I was?” He remarked, admittedly surprised that Oikawa even considered him ‘cute’ in that form, especially with how negatively he’d always perceived it himself. He gave him a small smile, fidgeting with the other’s fingers a little nervously.

“I didn’t feel very brave, I was nervous most of that time.” He admitted softly. “I-I’ve never been very comfortable like that, I guess, but it felt okay this time, it was kind of nice

“Yep” Oikawa smiled, “I learned a lot about you from observing you like that.”

“It’s okay, Asahi. You did so well!” Oikawa chimed, looking up at the other werewolf with a little smile. He’d been proud of Asahi for just turning, let alone staying in such a form he found daunting for so long. He knew exactly how frightened Asahi had been at the initial mention of shifting into his canine form, and so the smaller werewolf’s pride only grew from the moment he witnessed Asahi in such a way. “You don’t need to apologise,” he said gently, reaching out to Asahi, “it can be pretty tiring, you know, sustaining that form.”

“It was, a little, mostly I’ve just…never really done it like that, at least on my own.” He murmured quietly, climbing back onto the bed when Oikawa reached out to him, nervously taking his hand in an attempt to calm himself a little more. It was a little nerve wracking, staying like that so long, but the other’s support was helping at least, it was making it easier to come to terms with it.

He peeked back up at him after a moment, giving him a little smile. “It was okay, though? I know you wanted me to go outside, I’m jut…not ready for that quite yet.”

Beware of the dog

Oikawa shook his head no, he wasn’t too hungry and his nerves were causing a cramping sensation in the pit of his stomach.

“Although, some water would be nice…” He decided at last, wagging his tail slightly and sticking by his new owner’s side.

“Yeah…wasn’t nice and I don’t want to go back. Can I stay with you? You won’t take me back will you?”

“Of course I won’t,” he assured him. Suga stepped toward the kitchen, motioning for Oikawa to follow him inside. “I know what those places are like - well, not in the same experience you’ve had to deal with, but I know that they are unsafe and unfair and I will not subject you to that again.”

He opened a cabinet, pulling out a bowl and a plastic cup, looking between the two uncertainly.

“Um….”

He glanced back at the dogboy, unsure what his preference would be, so he held both up for him to choose.

Oikawa flinched slightly when Suga held the objects up , before realising that his owner wasn't going to hurt him, and pointing to the cup. The dogboy's tail was wagging contently as he glanced around the kitchen.

He'd begun to calm down a little now with the reassurance that Suga was committed to looking after him- concerned for the pup's wellbeing after rescuing him from the awful place where he'd been living.

"...thank you." He said quietly.

Slowly, as if he were cautious of something, Oikawa reached out to grasp the cup of water with both hands. His ears flattened themselves bashfully and his tail wagged only at the tip. He sat beside Suga, and rested against his legs, looking up from his water with the slightest little smile, accompanied by a short whine.

“I can see your tail wagging~” Oikawa said encouragingly, reaching out to ruffle Asahi’s thick mane of fur.

The larger of the pair was what could only be described as unsure as to what was outside if he were to adventure out in such a form. Many wolves, whether shifters or not, were hunted for their luxurious pelts, dappled with rich colour, so it was only reasonable for Asahi to be worried.

“We’ll go at your pace, okay?” The brunette said soothingly, scritching behind the wolf’s velvety ear, “you’re doing so good so far!”

Asahi let out a grateful little whine at the gentle touch, glad that Oikawa wasn’t forcing him to go outside, or even out of this room. It was making this a little easier to handle, he’d even managed to be comfortably turned for so long and he was actually doing pretty okay.

After a moment he gave him a little nudge, however, leaping down off the bed and into the bathroom, stepping out in his normal form, blanket wrapped around his shoulders.

“Sorry, I, ah, I wanted…sorry.” He mumbled softly, stepping back over to him, biting down on his lip. “Is it okay? That I turned back?”

Oikawa rejoined Suga’s side enthusiastically, his tail wagging a little quicker than before as his ears perked up and he nodded.

“It just smells a bit strange to me…but not in a bad way.”

In fact, it was quite the opposite to bad, the scents of cinnamon and vanilla made their way into the hybrid’s nose, though he was able to pick up on scents much less clear to a standard human nose.

“I’m not surprised. A new place will always smell different, especially after that place.”

Suga’s nose crinkled in distaste at the thought of the poor excuse of a “shelter.” He let his eyes wander around the room, trying to decide whether anything would need dogboy-proofing, but he shrugged off the idea. He would trust Oikawa until there was a reason given to him to not.

He glanced toward the kitchen next.

“Do you want something to eat? Some water?”

“Awh you~” Oikawa cooed, ruffling the wolf’s fur again, “it’s okay, you don’t need to be scared.”

He saw how shy Asahi was being, and tried to lighten his spirits by ruffling the blankets playfully, trying to tug them away from the nervous werewolf. Oikawa knew that Asahi would play when he wanted to, and so this time it was an attempt to distract him from the daunting outside.

“You’re so good Asahi! So brave!” He said gleefully, exciting the worried wolf, “I’m so proud!”

Asahi let out a soft noise when Oikawa tried to tug the blankets away from him, lifting his head so he could bite on the end of the blanket and tug back on them, the other’s encouragement helping to ease his nerves a little more.

He let out a little bark when he successfully tugged the blankets out of the other’s hand, falling back onto the bed and curling back up on top of them, tail wagging a bit now he’d managed to get a little more excited, not quite so worried about the suggestion the other had made.

“…no?” Oikawa soothed, running his fingers through the wolf’s soft fur in a comforting manner, “Shh shh.”

Asahi seemed terrified at just the concept of leaving the house in a canine form, so Oikawa decided not to push him. Instead, he tried to comfort the other wolf by picking up the little plush bunny he knew Asahi so adored, squishing it gently between his fingers to produce a shrill squeak.

He hoped he hadn’t frightened Asahi more with the sound, and Tooru let out a little whine himself in what could only be shock at the volume of the squeaker.

Asahi gave another little shake of his head, insisting that he was definitely not okay trying to go outside, there was just too much that could go wrong, too much to be afraid of out there, he wanted to be in here where he was safe, where nothing would happen to him-

He started a bit at the squeak, already a bit worked up just at the thought of being outside and vulnerable, burrowing under the blanket a bit. Once he recognized what it was he poked his head back up, hesitantly reaching for it.

Oikawa’s tail lifted upwards at the thought of never having to go back to where he had lived for years. The dogboy’s tail wagged softly from side to side gently as he trotted into the house on Suga’s command, before it sunk low again, tucking itself between Oikawa’s legs.

“N-no..I’ll stay here..”

The hybrid attempted to stifle his curiosity, the house smelt new and it was rather exciting, if not nerve-wracking and Oikawa wanted a chance to investigate every nook and cranny.

The leash holding him back was still there of course, Suga may want to show his new dogboy around himself, rather than risking damage.

Oikawa patiently waited for Suga to prepare himself, taking off his shoes and such. It was in a dogboy’s nature to often have a short attention span, but shepherd dogs like himself have an incredible ability to learn, and an unshakeable instinct to protect their handlers and possessions.

“I like you.” The canine hybrid mumbled, glad of his new owner who seemed extremely loving and caring towards Oikawa. “You’re nice.”

A grunt of the “that’s what I thought” variety was given in response to the quiet and unsteady words. The following comments were what caught Suga off guard - almost to the point of losing his balance while he set his shoes on the floor. He did not quite know what to say right away to the declaration of approval, but he appreciated it deeply.

“I’m very glad to hear that!” is what he eventually decided. He looked up in the direction of the living area and nodded toward it. “Are you ready for a little tour or do you want a moment to relax first?” he offered.

“…Do you want to go outside?” he asked with a little grin, fussing around Asahi’s ears, and talking to him softly, “You’ve been so brave!”

Asahi immediately grew alarmed at the question, the thought of going outside more than a little frightening. He didn’t know who might be out there, and what if someone saw him, what if someone tried to hurt him-

He shrunk back a bit, giving a little shake of his head as he sunk back onto the bed a bit more. He knew Oikawa wouldn’t let anything happen to him, knew he’d probably be safe, but it was still so terrifying thinking he could be seen, he’d never even left his room when he’d turned let alone gone outside.

The dogboy’s tail stopped wagging and he let out another shaky whine, going quiet again once Sugawara placed a gentle hand atop his head, petting between his ears.

“Never again?”

At the sound of those words, he retracted his hand, eyebrows raised in surprise. It made sense to Suga that he would be intimidated by entering a new house, but he seemed just a shade past skeptical.

“Are you saying you would like to go back there? Because I could take you back if you so desired, but I thought you would be glad to be away from them.”

He was entirely not serious, of course, but he would keep the option open, should he say he wanted out. Not that he would actually take Oikawa back there, but it was not impossible to be respectful of a hybrid’s wishes just as one could respect the comfort of a normal dog or speak with a normal human being.

Once he was sure his point was made, he looked back up at his front door and tugged very gently on the leash, encouraging Oikawa forward with a pat to the back of his head to move forward.

“If you please.”

Each time these whimpers arose, Suga would look at Oikawa and put his hand gently on the dogboy’s head.

“Shh, it’s okay. We’ll be home soon. I know things are scary right now, but you won’t ever have to see that awful place again. I hope that is a comforting thought.”

He looked from the dogboy up to the world around him and tried to put himself in the place of the other. Of course he would be terrified. Being sharp to others was a defense mechanism, and Suga was no stranger to the sharpness of halfbreed-owners in general. He frowned as he led Oikawa quietly around a corner to a much less busy street.

“We’re almost there. Just down here a little way.”
