i literally went back in my inbox to find this submission bc i was just thinking about how fucking pretty these are…..like dude idk where this was taken but yall have some INCREDIBLE lichen and bryophyte diversity….like i cant even like….individually decrypt all the species pictured here 

i WILL say that the fourth pic looks like a species of spagnum moss growing intertwined with some kind of foliose lichen; from the wrinkled look of the lobes it looks like some kind of lobaria, which are VERY cool lads, let me tell u. the most well known species of the genus is named lobaria pulmonaria, which is known for growing fast and large enough to cover whole ass trees:

all FANTASTIC lads (all lichens having a good crusty time) but i should also point out due to relevancy that the top pic is of a member of the cladonia genus which might be getting renamed. note how goddamn distinct that is, like it’s weird little sex arms reaching all the way up like that; the red bits on the ends are the sex bits themselves. she doesn’t need a new name shes perfect just how she is

idk how many lichen people follow this blog that will understand the power of this statement, but my lichen professor got an email from a colleague earlier this week saying that there’s serious talk of changing the name of the entire cladonia genus to something else because linnaeus apparently discovered it first. we have goddamn near an entire locker of cladonia samples in the herbarium. all of the lichen textbooks list cladonia as cladonia. all the cladonia in the national lichen consortium and databases are labelled as cladonia. all the papers on cladonia have them named as cladonia. when you say cladonia, people generally know that you mean cladonia, the large lichen family known for their weird fruiticose podecia. it’s not like its a small family.

Today I got curious about nutmeg and wound up learning something I never would have expected: it looks Incredibly Cursed™️ when raw!

The outside fruit is normal enough, but the nutmeg seed itself is encased in this strange scarlet webbing, called the aril, and looks exactly like the demon-infected heart of a video game monster. That haunted webbing is the source of mace, an apparently common spice that I have literally never heard of but which is the source of the classic doughnut flavor, among other things. (It’s not related to the self-defense aerosol.)

I think most people know you can also get balls high off freshly-ground nutmeg and possibly die after the absolute worst trip imaginable, potentially lasting several days.

So, that’s fun! Doughnuts are flavored with Deeply Cursed Monster Hearts and I find this utterly delightful.

anecdotal addition to this post: when teaching us about this my botany professor revealed that he actually had gotten high off of nutmeg before ‘for the scientific experience’. he reported that it was not at all a fun time and he would not recommend it
