As they made their way to one of the rooms for dancing, he looked across the room and, as though being led by an arrow, he made eye contact with one Miss Melissa King.

She looked more like herself, beautiful and bashful, and all of the feelings he’d repressed over the past five years came rushing back in full force. He watched the way she wrung her gloved hands together and wished he was there to calm her nerves. He saw a gold curl fall in her eyes and wanted to be the one to brush it away. He wanted to ask her to dance. He wanted to ask her to marry him. He wanted a lot of impossible things.

It was painful to witness Miss King’s expression at the sight of him. For a brief moment, she looked at him like she used to—eyes lit, cheeks rosy, a bright smile on her lips—before the present caught up with her, and it was like watching water being thrown on a fire as her expression noticeably cooled. Her nod was deep enough to be civil but not warm, and when she turned away, Langdon felt his insides turn to ice.

“I… I didn’t care,” Mel finally said. She locked her index and middle fingers together, squeezing her hands in a tight fist. She looked up at him, making brief eye contact, before looking away. Frank leaned harder against the door at his back, as if it could hold him in place. He wanted to go to her, wrap Mel in his arms, hold her tightly and never let her go again. He wasn’t going to do it unless she asked, though. He was already afraid he’d done too much as it was. “I don’t understand,” he admitted. Mel didn’t leave him hanging, thankfully. She squeezed her hands so hard, her knuckles turned white. “It was getting to the point that I didn’t really care what your whole plan was. I just… all I wanted was you.”
