Isabella was angry, or a more proper word for how she was feeling was livid. It was mostly at herself for allowing a stupid mutt get close enough to even scratch her let alone get a large gash across her stomach. But not one to show weakness, she gritted her teeth as the healers poked and prodded and drank to replace the blood that she had lost.
At a sharp stab from a healer that did not understand how easily her wrath could come upon them, she was distracted by a few of the human servants that were helping her own servants bow towards someone coming into the room.Â
Isabella rubbed her temple, resisting the need to murder someone before turning her head towards the human King who came to stand by her.Â
“I must say, your majesty, that I thought I would grow bored in your Kingdom but by tonight’s events, my opinion has changed.” Her tone was light and she smiled.
“Learning that it was a common enemy who poisoned the wine must put your mind somewhat at ease though, because if it was I, I’d fear retribution for putting so many royals at risk for it seeming that security was not the utmost importance at such an important ball.” Her tone became a little darker, making sure he heard the threat.
“I assure you, I feel absolutely terrible that anyone could be injured in my kingdom, especially visiting royals.” it was already causing him great stress, and he knew that his wife would be desperate to get him to relax and stop blaming himself. But guilty as he felt, he knew the poisoned wine came through no fault of his or his security, and the thinly-veiled threat made his jaw tighten. “I have the utmost faith in my guards. That bottle looked just like any other, and despite the awful events, I struggle to see how anyone else’s security could have spotted it.”
He would not be cowed into submission by the vampire queen and her venomous words. “If you wish to place blame on anyone, then it should be on our common enemy. Direct your wrath towards them, and we will have a stronger chance of winning this upcoming war. Together we stand or divided we fall.” They would get nowhere by threatening each other, and he would not retaliate to her threat with one of his own, just his warning that they had to be allied for this fight. But allies or not, he had heard all the stories about Queen Isabella, and knew he could not trust her.
