OverDope interviews Jay Park
[TRANS]
1. Is this Jay Park’s first time in Taiwan? How do you feel? I was first here in 2010 and this time the feeling was good. Actually I left Kpop for a period of time but there were a lot of fans welcoming me at the airport. I was touched.
2. We know that you grew up in America, in your opinion, do you feel that there are any differences between American and Asian music?
I feel that no matter what there will be some differences. After all, hip hop originated from America. I feel that the main difference is the use of language in expression, thus resulting in some differences in music expression.
3. Kpop is very popular around the world and just like you, you have many fans in Taiwan too. Do you know the reason why so?
Actually I’m not sure, but I think it started from being an idol. On the music aspect, they used music that are of high complexity and dances of the same standard, using a method close to brainwashing that makes people gradually accept them; in addition to the popularity of K-dramas, the world is able to see the charms of the Kpop idols. People started liking Korean music and dance, slowly we see the growing acceptance of Korea and understanding of Korean culture. Just like, from good first impression to gradually liking it, so I think it started from idols.
4. What is your status? What is your goal in your (performing) career?
I don’t want to be a typical singer. I want to do things that I like and things that I deem right and slowly open my own career path.
5. Rapping and B-boying are two major components of hiphop and they are your weapons as well, you are good at them. We are very curious, when did u start getting into hiphop?
Actually I started getting into hiphop because of my cousin. He has always been playing things like this. I have always been listening to hiphop and was influenced by the hiphop culture since I was young.
6. When you went back to America, because you covered B.o.B & Bruno Mars’ song <Nothin on You>, you rose to fame. We wish to know why you covered that song at that point of time?
Actually I have always liked these type of songs. I remembered at that time that not many people had heard the song yet and I heard this song on the radio when I was driving home; I felt that this song was not bad and had the intention to do a cover of the song.
7. Musicians that you admire?
The musicians I admire are categorised into two stages. When I was young, I liked Tu-pac, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, The Notorious B.I.G, Nas, etc. As I grew older, I started listening to music by Jay-z, Kanye West, J.Cole, Big Sean, Kendrick Lamar, etc. These people are hip hop musicians that I truly respect.
8. Jay Park, do you have any Taiwanese singers that you want to collaborate with?
I’m not familiar with Taiwanese pop music, but if there’s a chance, I’m willing to work with singers of a different language and culture. I hope to interact with others through music.
9. Currently there are many Korean stars expanding their career in Japan, how about you? Do you wish to go to Japan?
Indeed, currently there are many Korean celebrities expanding their career in Japan, however I don’t have the opportunity to go there at this point in time. If there’s a chance to go into Japan, I wish to perform with a different style from others, bringing a fresh new experience to Japan with my unique style of music.
10. Briefly introduce your fashion style and favourite brand.
I have many tattoos, each of them have a meaning - like trust, dance, loyalty, etc. Some represent places like my hometown Seattle and Seoul.
11. Luxy, Taipei is the most renowned night club in Taipei and coincidentally your day of performance is on Valentine’s Day, did Jay Park prepare anything special for your fans?
Of course I will bring the best Jay Park to everyone. And also if I’m able to, I wish to date a Taiwanese girlfriend.
12. We are looking forward to your future performances in Taiwan. Lastly, some words for your fans!
I haven’t gotten the chance to meet my Taiwanese fans, even so, they have been constantly supporting me. I’m very happy and extremely grateful. Hopefully in the future, I will have more time to meet you all and hope that everyone will continue to support me, support Jay Park.
