Wakeboarding: the most fun you can have in a wetsuit
Dazzled by the annual Red Bull Harbour Reach wakeboarding competition, Theo Merz tries out a young, challenging sport that combines the thrills of waterskiing and snowboarding.
It is nine o’clock on a Sunday morning and a wire is pulling me across the water of the Albert Docks, Liverpool.
This is my first attempt at wakeboarding. My feet are strapped into what looks like a snowboard and, as I start moving, I pull this under me and bring my body into a crouching position.

What can you expect from your first kitesurf lesson?
Firstly you have to learn to fly a kite and this is surprisingly more complicated than an afternoon in the park with Dick van Dyke.
You will learn about wind windows, the source of power collection for the kite, how to control it and crucially, how to stay safe. Essentially, kitesurfing is a professional’s dream as planning and preparation are critical – something many watersports historically overlook, but nevertheless not to be smirked at.
This is evident when it comes to setting up the kite, a process about as complicated as rigging a racing dingy. Basically, coloured nautical demarcation exists on the two directional lines, along with two power lines, which act as a very impressive safety feature.
All of these lines connect into a bar that you can power up and power down as you navigate and this, in turn, is connected to your harness. For added peace of mind, there is typically a two-tiered safety release too. There is a lot of kit and as you plod down the beach, believe me, doubt can set in.
Surprise bonuses are that your harness will keep you very warm and few of these other water users could ever reach the 55 knots achieved by the world kitesurfing speed champ. Next you are going to get to experiment in the shallows and this is where the fun begins. At this point you learn to respect and appreciate the power of the wind, as you experience a body drag.
The next stage is learning to connect your new kite skills with the board. For anyone that has wake boarded this will be easier than you expect, as the boards are similar, yet it will really test you kite control – a moment’s shift of your concentration and the kite can lose or gain power and you are going head first into the sand (or so I hear).

2014 Maiden by Raimi Merritt
Hyperlite Womens Maiden Wakeboard 2014
Sizes: 134cm, 138cm
RAIMI MERRITT INSPIRED MODEL
With the help of Raimi Merritt we have created just the board. The Maiden series features a continuous rocker that lays the foundation for a fast board that carves and edges with ease. The Maiden features innovative Tapered Channels narrow at the tip and tail aligning the Dual Fin Configuration to increase the board's edge hold on approach to the wake. This helps to deliver a pop off the wake like no other for any approach style. The thinner profile of the board and reduced tip and tail width minimize swing weight for simple rotation on fl at and inverted spins. Combine all of this with our women's specific Satin flex and Dual Molded Landing features and you have a deck perfect for a female ripper.
