i'm baffled by all the things i see where people say that their ultimate end goal for sansa is for her to be in a happy marriage with a nice boy her own age. like surely that cannot be all that you want for her... ? i'm not a huge fan of sansa qitn theories but i greatly prefer them to "sansa should end up with [x] because they're both so good and sweet it's what they deserve and they can have good and sweet babies together"
there has been much discussion on the dash of why "this character deserves xyz" is not a productive, interesting, or accurate way to approach the books by mutuals who have phrased it better than i but for me it's not even about "these books are not about what any of the characters deserve" it's more like... that's really all you want for her? that's it?
like. sansa was, in fact, betrothed to a nice boy her own age. it was joffrey.
sansa was the eldest daughter of a noble house. she was well bred nobility. she was courteous and clever and well mannered and well educated. her only goal and destiny in life was to be married to a lord and produce healthy viable heirs to continue her and his lineage. being engaged to prince joffrey baratheon, prince of all seven kingdoms, heir to the realm, was the best possible thing that ever could have happened to her. there is no higher social elevation. she would become queen. she would birth the next king.
i think we all saw how well that turned out, no? joffrey had her father's head chopped off. we spend about three books watching him order his kingsguard to beat and humiliate her.
like the point of sansa's storyline is to deconstruct the princess in a tower trope. sansa is a noble lady. when all her dreams come true and she is made a princess by her betrothal to the realm's most eligible and desirable bachelor, he tortures and debases her. he kills her father. once she become a princess, she is locked in a tower. there is no brave good pure hearted knight coming to save her. every time she depends on someone, anyone!! to come and rescue her, they end up locking her in another tower.
sansa getting everything she ever dreamed of with her engagement to joffrey is what begins her storyline and what spurs the many horror she endures.
does it really make sense to you that after starting this story with the marriage of her dreams turning out to be a horrifying hellscape, that sansa will end this story with... a niceys marriage of her dreams? a marriage of her dreams that works out super well this time?
this is also one of many ways that jeyne and sansa's storylines are in conversation with one another. they are both princesses locked in towers.
jeyne's storyline is not her own. it is a part of theon's story. theon is the brave knight who saves an innocent princess from the monster who locks her in a tower. jeyne's is not a story of jeyne being rescued, but rather a story of theon becoming the kind of person who can rescue her. he regains his personhood and his humanity and he becomes the hero of the songs to jeyne despite being a heartless child-killing turncloak pseudo-kinslayer to everyone else.
sansa's story is her own. she is the princess locked in the tower. there is no knight coming to save her. she'll have to climb out herself. (unless it's brienne but tbhwu i don't see brienne succeeding in her quest to find sansa it's not in the cards for me... well when twow comes out this summer perhaps it will prove me wrong!)
i know no one liked the deliberately glacial pacing of s2.1 but i miss it so bad... these past 4 episodes of s3 have felt like everything is on 2x speed. none of the significant moments have any time to breathe... i miss my slow dragging episodes that made the silences count. no one even really has time to Look Meaningfully this season.
gwayne got so normal between season btw what happened to gwayne. did they nerf him to make room for a real pederast?
ormund having short hair is a good character driven styling choice but selfishly i wish he had it longer like gwayne so i could find him attractive. but it is not to be. my appreciation for the new rape uncle in town will be purely platonic. collegial, even.
daeron's dragon being SO used to disposing of bodies btw. very good.
crazy that the new rape uncle on the block can so easily outmog our beloved and established rape uncle whose childbride contender to the throne is having a pretty easy time of it despite crawling into his bed every night like a child to avoid her father's
two freaks but one made the other that way
i rly hope s3 continues the thread of rhaenyra having no actual skills necessary to rule. a core failing of viserys to both his heirs is that he had no real interest in anything after aemma died and did nothing to prepare his declared heir rhaenyra nor his assumed heir aegon to take his place. instead, alicent — as groomed by otto — took their place and assumed their position. and viserys, happy to be relieved of the burden of responsibility, allowed it. in this way as in many others, otto and viserys were the absent father and the manchurian mother that raised rhaenyra and alicent.
ep 3 was so good tv is back for real this time
the dysfunctional duo
Hey. Listen. Sorry for calling you a fucking idiot loser and then touching your crotch inappropriately. I'm what's called a 'tsundere',
“besides, I have a sister.” top contender for one liner that makes me so emotional
i can’t explain why that last sentence always feels like a punch to the gut but if you get it, you get it
