I’ve been waiting for you
To come around and tell me the truth
‘Bout everything that you’re going through
My girl you’ve got nothing to lose
“Baby?” Calum said gently as he entered your dark bedroom. The house was quiet when he came home other than Duke’s paws softly pittering to meet him at the door. You usually greeted Calum when he walked in but tonight the lights were off except for the hall light and it concerned him. He stepped up the stairs and found an empty, unmade bed. He looked around the room before seeing the bathroom door shut, light peering from the space between the bottom of the door and the floor. Calum shed his jacket and changed into more casual clothes, giving you a minute of space before he said anything else. You’ve had nights like these before—locking yourself away and not talking to Calum about what’s wrong. Not because of anything he did, you were just too fragile and hurting to let him in to see any of it. So instead you’d lock the bathroom door and cry or stare up at the ceiling while sitting on the cool tile floor. You could be in there for any amount of time but every minute that passed felt like hours to Calum. He hated knowing you were in pain and not being able to help, but nonetheless he’d sit and be patient. He’d wait for you to come out and kiss him goodnight before you curled up in bed and fell asleep. After almost 20 minutes he softly knocked on the door, knuckles barely grazing the wood as to not startle you, “Hi doll, I love you. I’ll be out here waiting whenever you’re ready, okay?” he said in the most elegant and calm voice you’d ever heard. When he got no response, he slipped under the covers and waited. Not too long after, you emerged from the bathroom and climbed in next to him, pushing yourself into his warm body and closing your eyes. He stroked your hair and filled the silence, “Do you want to talk about it?” he whispered. You mumbled a ‘no, but I love you’ and kissed his chest. Calum’s heart was aching but he didn’t want to push you. He just wanted you to know he was there if you needed him.
Cold nights and the Sunday mornings
On your way and out of the grey
The light beamed through the blinds the next morning, you were still snuggled up to Calum but now into his side instead of his chest. You opened your eyes and found him still fast asleep. You crawled carefully out of bed to go downstairs to let Duke out and feed him. You caught your reflection in the glass sliding door, rubbing your eyes to try and wipe away the leftover mascara you cried off. Your eyes were slightly puffy which reminded you of your episode last night but you shook the thoughts away. You watched Duke run around the yard and smiled to yourself, admiring how cute he was. You heard Calum’s footsteps as he came down the stairs, turning to see him stretch at the last step, muscles flexing and tattos covering his arms and chest. “Enjoying the view my love?” he said and you rolled your eyes playfully. “Good morning to you too,” He walked over to you and kissed your temple, running his palms up and down your arms. He followed your gaze to Duke, who started rolling around in the dirt. “He’s so damn cute, but such a pain in the ass to bathe” he said. You both laughed and walked to the kitchen to make yourselves some breakfast. Sunday mornings for you and Cal were typically relaxed days, early breakfast and various naps throughout the day. As you and him sat at the table and ate, he nudged your knee with his, “Feeling better?” he asked, genuinely hopeful. You nodded and smiled, “Yes. Thank you Cal.”
Crowded town or silent bed
Pick a place to rest your head
Give me a minute to hold my girl
The following Saturday night the boys had a special performance for an awards show and it was a great time. You danced with Crystal and Sierra when the boys performed, you went absolutely crazy when they won two awards and you drank tons with your friends. At the after party you stuck by Calum’s side, talking with him and a bunch of other celebrities they had made friends with. You were having such a blast until the night drew to a close. You were drunk and exhausted, the night washing over you like a thousand pounds of weight on your shoulders. As you walked out of the venue you felt yourself start to become uneasy. You felt sad and so many thoughts were racing in your head, you just wanted to sleep. You all huddled outside a bar down the street from the party and the boys debating going in. “We’re all going in for a little, Cal, Y/N, you coming?” Michael asked. Calum looked at you and he just knew. You didn’t know how but he just knew you couldn’t right now. “I think we’re just gonna head back to the hotel, we’ll see you guys when you get back.” Michael nodded and you guys waved goodbye before Calum called an Uber. It was cold and you were shivering in the dress you wore, so Calum opened his jacket and tucked you under it, your back flush to his chest. When the Uber came Calum let him know where you were headed and you leaned your head on his shoulder. He rubbed soft circles on your thigh and you closed your eyes, wanting so badly to get out of your head.
I’ve got time, I’ve got love
Got confidence you’ll rise above
Give me a minute to hold my girl
Once you arrived back to your hotel room, you went to your suitcase to grab clothes and change. You went to the bathroom go take off your makeup but before you could Calum stopped you, “Y/N wait. I don’t like to push and I don’t want to make you uncomfortable but baby, I hate seeing you like this and not being able to do something. I just want to help you. You can tell me anything, absolutely anything and it won’t change a thing. I don’t know what you’re scared of but I can’t help ease your fears if you don’t tell me anything,” he said. You saw the desperation in his eyes, silently pleading for you to open up, to let him help. You sighed and took his hand. You sat down on the bed side by side and you started playing with the rings on his fingers, “I hope you’re not tired because it’s a lot” you mumbled. Calum pushed your hair behind your ear, “I have all the time in the world, love.” So you did it. You spilled everything to Calum—your fears, your demons, what you were going through. For at least an hour, pushing two, you opened up to him about everything that was going on with you behind those bathroom doors and closed eyelids. And he sat. He listened intently. He rubbed your back when your voice started to break and he wiped stray tears from your cheeks before wiping his own. You felt so free yet so afraid he’d want to turn and run away from all the darkness you were carrying, but he didn’t. Calum told you that you’d be okay, and that he’d help you get there. That you could always lean on him for support and love, that he would make it better as best he could. After you calmed down, he let you go wash your face and you two got into bed. You were laying side by side but then he grabbed you, pulling you into his chest. Calum locked his arms around your waist and nuzzled his head into your hair, “I promise I’m not going anywhere, so let me lay here and hold you, because I love you.” he said with complete certainty. You let your body relax into his and you closed your eyes, “I love you more than you know, Calum.”
