Project 6: Open work. No deep thoughts, no comment on society, I just took the opportunity to do the bulletin boards for my Mom's classroom, and had a wonderful time creating woodland creatures. Perhaps more craftsy than artsy, but I had fun.

Happy first of Octobear
With this project, Painting with Laughter, my intentions were to create a somewhat obscene piece of work that caused a physical or emotion reaction from the audience, as well as give me a good laugh. I decided on laughter after over thinking the realities of the world around us. I wasn’t laughing. I felt that instead of creating a body of work containing sensitive subject matter, I would simply as the question, “What the fuck you laughing at?” Perhaps to entice the audience to stop for a moment and ask themselves, what is so funny, is it really that funny?
I found an archive of laughter, from the archive I edited the sound clips to create harmonies, melodies, percussion, and bass lines. In art terms layers of different patterns, textures and color frequencies. None of the sounds have been manipulated by any outside midi instruments.
What an interesting choice. I'm glad that I only have the lousy speakers of my tablet to listen to that. I think the surround sound of earphones might have left me a withering mess. How did you listen to that for the time it took to create? Out of all of the projects I think this one conveys the intended message best. Taken away from context laughter evokes a completely different emotion and takes on a surprisingly sinister tone. The only thing that took me out of it is recognizing one of the laughs towards the beginning, I can envision it with projections of mouths in a small, dark room that gives a little claustrophobia and forces the viewer to be immersed by the experience. Never do that, it will give me nightmares for weeks.
Artist Statement #2
My inspiration for this project was to essentially try and capture how love is fleeting, dark, and beautiful all at once. I chose to collect photos that depict the shape of a heart in unexpected places. I then made the choice to turn the heart black to emphasize how painful it can be to love and then to lose it. It was my goal to contrast a dark heart with the beautiful content of each photo.
I like the idea and the thought that went into it. Your attempt to show the light side of romance juxtaposed with the dark and pain that is so often apart of it is an incredibly ambitious one. Without your statement I read these as a heart that had been ripped or burned away. The stark black makes it look more like a void than a darkness, in my opinion. It certainly gives it a different meaning! Well done, well executed.
I couldn't get a good picture of my real "gallery wall" Hooray photoshop!
Project #2
Note - There are 5 more I just ran out of time and energy to color the rest. Tomorrow maybe, for now sleep is needed.
My favorite book! Thanks for showing your process. I can see why you were so exhausted. You did a great job in your text choices. They work remarkably well for the text page being chosen at random. Love these.
Project # 2
Good Golly, I love this. Your choice to use different emotions(as well as other characters of the same actor) make for some great contrasts. The plain background does a wonderful job to the same end. I agree that the top one is fuzzy but I certainly know how that goes with all these internet pictures being of different quality. I think it is your weakest of the pictures because of the choppy job on the selection. The rest of the pictures are finely done and look like you put a lot of time and effort into them. I guess, shouldn't have led with that one. The rest have much more refinement to them and would have been a better lead.
Selections
This group of pictures represents a few of my favorite artists, bands, and groups. When I listen to them I feel like this is what I hear, if it was in color. It kind of felt like I was hallucinating when I was making these pieces, but I assure you that no laws were broken during the making of these pieces.
Just to clarify: I live in the Caribbean and cannot print out the pictures (we don’t have a Staples or Officemax… There are not even postmen here, we have to go into town to pick up mail!) , so I had to improvise on my computer which means that I never drew on the pictures physically and I cannot take a picture of them “like they were in a gallery.” Tumblr is my gallery.
You made some incredible choices. I am amazed by your ability to use color as an accent that draws the eye further towards the black and white image. It truly conveys the feeling that music can achieve. Your choice to go with all black and white for Ray Charles made me smile. That said, I feel the Beetles is a little contrived: using imagery that is already connected with the band that does not so much show your feeling towards that music but the band's own feeling about themselves. All considered though, that is a small complaint. I'm impressed. Nice work.
I will do a gallery wall when I get home tomorrow. Until then, here are done individual pictures.
Selections Statement
My aim in life is medical illustration. Perhaps as far away on the spectrum from post contemporary as possible. I seek the cold definition that detail provides. My idea of creativity is abstraction to improve clarity. I have an incredibly difficult time when there are few boundaries. If I have rules, then I enjoy seeking out the weak point, testing, prodding, flexing until, inevitability, there is the satisfying crunch of the break. But, if there are no boundaries I don’t know where to begin. Free reign is the same thing as lost and alone. This class is difficult and maddening. I have used this project as an opportunity for a little personal growth in the matter. I started someplace comfortable: scientific illustration (thank you to the Smithsonian for their incredible archive). I then layered the pieces in the attempt to mask meaning and continuity: deny the delicious precision that I crave. I then chose the notoriously messy medium of soft pastels to add color which meant contending with dust and smearing on cheap paper. Rather than coloring objects (I began this way and realized that I didn’t have the time nor was I breaking from my comfort zone) I followed lines at will: ignoring the symbol in favor of the flow. An incredible thing happened. Rather than losing my objects to abstraction they reemerged. The fish were no longer specimen, they became bright eyed swimmers struggling through their complicated life. The mummy transformed into a distraught boy whose life came to an end tragically early and I have become enraptured in the million possibilities and stories that his life may have held. When I let go of control the work took up the reigns and I ended up with something that is so much more true to life than my hours of detailing could ever accomplish.
