On Your Doorstep || Jack and Kinsley
She used to love weddings. Parties, filled with love and champagne, celebrating happiness and life and love and everything she lived for in life. She used to be the one half in tears while the bride and groom said their vows, shrieking with delight as she ran to tacklehug the happy couple, one of the first on the dance floor, usually the first to the drinks, the one that kept the party on it's high until it was time to say goodbye to the bride and groom.
But tonight was different. Instead of basking in the glow of love, all she could remember was saying goodbye to Jack before he left; instead of twirling around on the dance floor, she remembered the way he'd laughed like a good sport when she'd met him at the airport and thrown herself at him in delight; instead of floating around the party drinking just enough champagne to make her happy and tipsy, she'd crossed that line a good three glasses ago and was officially drunk.
And maybe that was why she found herself in a cab, reciting an address she shouldn't remember but did anyway, why she found herself tossing bills she didn't bother to look at at the driver, tripping over her gown on her way up to the door, and ringing the doorbell a few times.
She tried to seem steady as the door opened and the boy she couldn't get out of her head stood in front of her. "Minnie's wedding was tonight, she's my mom's cousin remember?" he wouldn't, she rarely talked about her mom's family or interests, and it was likely she'd never mentioned Minnie, or the fact that she was engaged, "And it was beautiful and perfect but you weren't there and my mom kept asking about you and kept saying how it would be so cute if it was us but it wasn't us and it's never going to be us but I wanted to see you so I left. And uhm... hi, I guess."
