does writing by hand (with a paper and pen) have any actual effect on the quality of writing? The wonderful actress who played Professor Trelawney in the Harry Potter movies seems to think so, and Stephen Colbert seems to agree with her. This question made my mind go in an entirely different tangent, and I will discuss it now.
The only real antithesis to generative AI seems to be doing the tasks you would assign to it yourself.
Anyways, reading books and writing and learning and making art— no matter how bad— seems to be the only way to fight this plague, and a plague it is, for it has killed people and will continue to do so as it uses our resources.
To fight it, you read a lot, and then you write, and then you read and write some more. That is all there is to it.
You put tags at the end of your searches on google to ensure you aren't fuelling Gemini. You look for answers in textbooks instead of GPT, and you pester your professors and peers when you do not understand what it says.
You make notes on the edges of your textbook. You learn by writing, speaking, by explaining things to someone.
You do it when its inconvenient. And then perhaps, in doing so, you save your mind. You save your ability to read, understand, pester humans; you save your ability to connect.
It takes time. It is simple. It is not wasy, however. It is exponentially harder than putting a prompt in an app with hoards of information on its fingertips. But the ease is not worth turning twenty and realising AI use over the past two years or so has caused you to be unable to write half as well as you did as a middle schooler.
Recently, I had to make a film for an elevtive class of mine. I shot it(with the help of a friend!) and thought of getting it edited via AI. Instead of going forward with that idea, I instead got in touch with a friend I had not talked to in a while. She was so, so generous to do the editing for me! She really didn't have to. And neither do the fanfiction/ original work authors on ao3 and tumblr have to do what they do. Neither did the cavemen and women have to make their paintings on the caves of the walls they lived in. But they did nevertheless! They do, nevertheless. Because we are human, and that is what we do.
I admit, I am ashamed of the quality of my work recently (as I picked up writing again)
Or maybe I'm actually just trying to delay studying for my exam tomorrow. But that is beyond the point.
Because AI will never be a human, a nurse or a teacher or an engineer or a paramedic who works all day and finds time for creativity in the evening.
I am human and I can think and care and create art, bad as it may be. I can meet other humans through that creation! @kintsukoi and @rubbys-domain come to mind. Extremely cool people who rejuvenate my belief in human creativity.
Anyways, we will not let the fascists control our minds. They want us thoughtless. They want us unable to express ourselves when we do think.
We will not them them! We will not let them have us.

I think it takes a lot of bravery and will to say no to AI when all the tech that surrounds us on a daily basis seems hell-bent on trying to push us into that direction, especially at a time when it is absolutely crucial that we are able to think critically for ourselves. Knowing how to properly fact-check instead of accepting what we see at face value has always been a crucial skill. It also doesn't come naturally. We must work at it, and it takes major effort. But it is worth it in spades. And I applaud the steps you have taken to hone your own skills in that manner.
The connection that you speak about is, in my opinion, absolutely key. Part of the reason why online spaces like this one are so great is because it allows us to connect with people we probably wouldn't otherwise have come across in our lifetime. And in doing so, we learn so much from each other. Reading and writing, learning and teaching, creating art (of all forms!) and really digesting and appreciating all the time and detail and skill that went into making something from nothing is a form of connection. The fact that someone poured a piece of themselves into what they're putting out into the world is something AI cannot replicate. It is inherent in the fabric of our common ground as human beings. And it is also the reason why I personally believe that art (once again, in all its forms!) will always survive, no matter what 💕
