Growing up my dad had a friend that was his best friend from secondary school but that friend also severely struggled with his mental health and never quite managed to function as an adult so after a major breakdown he was put into a home for disabled adults that needed assistance.

My dad very much loved and cared for his friend but the friend had nobody but my dad and so he would spend all day long calling our home asking if my dad was home or available to talk. My dad told us kids to either lie about where he was or to not pick up the phone in the first place. This wasn’t because he didn’t ever want to talk to this friend but because this friend only had him as an option and it was just too much for my dad.

Eventually the friend stopped calling because my dad gave him the wrong phone number on purpose.

I refuse to be that friend.
