Uglies - Scott Westerfeld
Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. Not for her license- for turning pretty. In Tally's world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there.
But Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure she want's to be pretty. She'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world- and it isn't very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.
I'm going to discuss the whole trilogy, however i will only have the blurb for the first so i don't ruin anything for people who have not read the series.
These books are really good- for the first read. They explore an insanely interesting world with wholly different ideals and ideas of perfection to our own. Though they also share some of our traits which lets us- the reader to connect to the characters.
All of the books in the 'main' series follow the same set of characters who we see change over time due to the situations they are put through. Its definitely interesting and it does draw you in alot. Only if you have an imagination though.
This is because of the writing style. No offence to the author, Scott Westerfeld, but the style of writing is very pedestrian and simple, it gives simplistic descriptions of locations and items unique to the world he created. Unfortunately, this makes the series hard to get through for some due to the fact that in their imagination the world is not fully created, imagine a blurred photograph of something you have never seen. You then have to put people in the picture whose face you don't really know. Its hard for some, and easy for others.
This series, because of the above observation, is great for imaginative young teens. And there are a lot of them these days. So it has grown very popular.
The series is honestly great, if you don't really look into the writing style due to its really interesting themes and the whole world they live in. I'de recommend it to anyone who can create a imagine with little description.
Now i do want to say it gets abit repetitive, the language is simple ( in a way) and sometimes you loose focus on what is going on. But despite that it is a good light read.
