Time in motion: Phase 1 Site development 📰 . Water Depth Recorder, 1895, Old Pumping Station. . The depth of water on the pump well, below the engine room, was continuously recorded on the paper chart by means of the pen which was moved up and down by a cord wound round the wheel on the lower right of the instrument. This cord, now removed, was attached to a float on the surface of the water in the well below. The second pen, which is a later addition, records the boiler pressure. It was fitted to avoid conflicts between the driver and the stoker. The first duty of the oncoming shift on Monday morning was to fit a new chart and wind the clockwork mechanism. Manufactured by Glenfield Co Ltd, Kilmarnock, 1895. Cambridge Museum Of Technology: The Steam Engine . #timeinmotion phase 1 . The steam engine was built by Hathorn Davey & Co. in Leeds and installed at the Pumping Station in 1894, along with the South engine. The two engines are almost identical and were run one at a time for a period of up to two weeks. They were fueled by the historic boilers and pumped sewage from Cambridge to the sewage farm at Milton. The engines run at up to 14 strokes a minute and are 80 horse power. The Chimney of the museum/ Old Pumping Station: The chimney shaft is 175ft (53m) high, and is 6ft (1.8m) across the top inside measurement.
