Today I had my first tutorial for my Independent Research Project. This is the module for which we write out dissertation. So far I have researched 3 main topics over summer. These include Passivhaus Technology, Zero Carbon living, and Biomimicry. So, for this tutorial, I showed my tutor the initial research.

From this, we deduced that my next step would be to make links between the topics, find what aspects interest me and to come up with a main question or title for my dissertation and to make an extended bullet point plan of how iI could introduce information into my essay.

I feel that I have taken alot from this tutorial as it has given me some sort of direction as to where to go with my research and how I can explore these topics to discover what interests me.

Today’s blog is on the difference between interior design and interior decoration

Many people think interior design and interior decoration are the same, but they are actually different fields. Both make spaces look beautiful, but their work and responsibilities are not the same.

What is Interior Design?

Interior design is about planning and organizing a space properly. An interior designer works on layout, space planning, lighting, furniture placement, and sometimes even walls and structure. They focus on both function and beauty. They make sure the space is comfortable, safe, and practical. Designers often work with architects and need technical knowledge.

What is Interior Decoration?

Interior decoration is about making a space look beautiful. A decorator chooses colors, curtains, furniture, cushions, wall art, and accessories. They do not change the structure of the space. They focus only on the look, theme, and style of the room.

Main Difference

Interior design = planning + structure + function + beauty.

Interior decoration = styling + colors + accessories + beauty.

Interior design usually requires professional education and technical skills. Interior decoration mainly requires creativity and a good sense of color and design. In simple words, designers create and plan the space, and decorators enhance and beautify it. Both are important to make a home or office look complete and attractive.

Blog 3: Colour Theory in Interior Design

Colour theory is very important in interior design. A designer should understand the meaning of colours because they affect mood and feelings in a space.

Red shows anger, danger, and strong emotions.

Black represents darkness, elegance, class, and a formal look.

White stands for purity, peace, cleanliness, and comfort.

Yellow means happiness, joy, warmth, and cheerfulness.

Orange shows positivity, spiritual energy, and brightness.

Pink represents softness, romance, beauty, and calmness.

Green means growth, freshness, health, and nature.

Blue shows calmness, royalty, coldness, and sometimes sadness.

Purple represents luxury, mystery, and uniqueness.

Brown stands for earth, nature, culture, and stability.

Grey shows maturity, elegance, dullness, and sometimes depression.

In interior design, there are three types of colours:

Primary colours – red, blue, and yellow.

Secondary colours – orange, green, and purple.

Tertiary colours – made by mixing primary and secondary colours.

Understanding colours helps designers create beautiful and balanced spaces.

My topic is Interior Design

I chose interior design because I am originally from Himachal Pradesh, and I noticed that there are not many places with a unique or attractive ambience. Most hotels, restaurants, and even houses look very basic and similar. This made me think that good interior design is really needed there. I also felt that learning interior design would help me in the future and support my father’s business as well.

In interior design, the first thing was the basics—principles and elements of design. There are many principles, starting from simple ones like dot and line, and then moving forward step by step. Then there are some elements such as unity, harmony, rhythm, and balance, which help in making any space look complete and well-planned.

Then there is a basic difference between art and design. Art can be freehand and does not always need a purpose, but design is always made for use and function. For example, an elephant-face wall hanging is art, but when that same design is used as a gate pattern or a cupboard knob, it becomes design. This helped me understand that interior design is not just about looking good, but also about being useful. There are some good examples like rhythm , harmony , unity , hue , etc .
