“But I don’t want to be like everyone. I don’t want to hurt you.”
“You’re not like everyone, it’s cool. What’s new with you?”
“It’s not ridiculous, Kirk. It’s true. I don’t want to hurt you too.”
“Rio, everyone hurts me. I’m over it.”
“Because I’m like a grenade. At some point, I’m going to blow up and I just- I want to minimize the damage.”
“No, Rio. That’s ridiculous. And I don’t believe you.”
“Yeah. I’m not the best person to be around.”
“That’s nonsense. Why would you think that?”
“I would but I think you should have time away from me.”
“I should have time away from you?”
“It does. I think If I’m being honest, I think I’m just going to have more.”
“You can come to me, if you need to. I know I’m not much help but... I don’t know, you can anyway.”
“Yeah. I think it’s because the hurricane reminded me of the night my parents died. No need to be sorry.”
“That... sucks, Rio. I--” He cut himself off, pressing his lips together. “Hopefully you won’t have them anymore.”
“It used to, but I haven’t had one ever since the night David died.”
“It’s good you haven’t been having them as often then, I guess... but it still sucks you had one then. I’m sorry.”
“I kind of had a panic attack.”
“Yeah? Does that happen often?”
“Fine, I guess. The hurricane was a bad experience.”
“Hurricanes... typically aren’t a great experience, no. What made it so bad though? Did something happen I didn’t know about?”
“That’s good enough for me.”
“Yeah. How have you been?”
Brice nodded as she gave Kirk a once over. He didn’t seem like a bad person despite her initial impression of him. “I suppose I am,” she agreed, rolling her eyes good-naturedly. “At least you’re not an axe murderer.”
“Hey, you don’t know. I may be an axe murderer.” He laughed after a second, “But I’m not, that is one thing you don’t actually have to fear. I don’t think the founders would be too found of any kind of murderer living here.”
“You don’t have to know how to. Just don’t try and let yourself be natural for once.”
“Right. I will try that. I’m not making any promises though.”
Kairi nodded at his words, agreeing with what he was saying. “You are odd, from what I can tell.” Kairi stated, flashing a soft smile in his direction. “I don’t know, maybe you’re sad. Like depressed or something. Those sound like things sad and depressed people would say.”
“I am odd,” he repeated with a laugh, arching an eyebrow at her description. She was right, actually, or close enough. The girl was definitely onto something. But he just shrugged. “Oh, then I should probably figure out, what kind of things do happy people say?”
“Hmm. Shame,” she muttered. Kirk. Why was that name familiar? Snapping her fingers, she looked at Kirk with narrowed eyes. “What room are you staying at?”
“If you say so,” he shrugged, his eyebrows raising when she snapped her fingers and narrowed her eyes, like she was accusing him of something almost, but she questioned him instead. “The Gryffindor Room,” he laughed. “Oh, wait. Are you my new roommate?”
“You sure about that?” she asked, not believing the boy’s words fully. With a light laugh, she held out a hand. “You’re amusing. I’m Brice. I don’t think we’ve met yet.”
“Yes, I’m positive. Me being drunk would usually be a good possibility, but high, never. I don’t do drugs.” He’d already said that, but it was true, so he said it again, nodding. “That’s a cool name. Nice to meet you, Brice. I’m Kirk. And I can say I’m fairly certain we have not met, no.”
