She was glad to be his friend but what he had said next made her smile falter. A disease is going around? Is that why he was so hurried about letting her in besides those animals? “N… No. There was this fire and… I couldn’t save them. My fault to be honest. How come everyone is getting sick? Are you feeling ill, Kiro?” Worried about his health.
A forest spirit like her wouldn’t be able to get sick like humans but… The fact of carrying it just to spread it scared Kaphona. She did not like this topic. “How old are you? I’m eleven.” Figuring it was better to say this age with the apperance of it.
“You can’t always save everyone... Sometimes it’s better to give up.” He gave her an unsure smile. At least that’s what he did. He gave up on them. They were beyond saving- and none of them were worth it. They were just self-serving, greedy-
He stopped thinking about those things. It didn’t matter anymore. Not that now that they were all gone. But was it worth losing the few he did care for? Unsure. “They caught the same sickness. The same one that took my mother from me. T-the one where they-” He swallowed hard, as his eyes started to water. “Everyone died- they all turned black and- and-” He had to stop himself to choke back a sob, and he buried his face into his arms now as he curled up into a sad ball.
“I-I don’t know.” He wasn’t certain about his condition in the slightest and his shaky voice- even muffled coming from where he’d buried his face- conveyed his doubts. He was up walking and talking; but, he had no idea whether or not he had the same sickness. It had been long enough that he was probably going to be fine... right?
Kiro tried to focus on what Kaphona was saying. How old was he? He tried to remember his last birthday and memories of his home flooded his senses, memories from before all of the death. “I think I’m seven.” He sniffled and wiped his nose on his knees before he held up his hands, fingers outstretched to show the same number of years.

“Ah, I used to have a lot but then… Now I just have a very few but you’re the only friend I’ve seen recently so… Yeah.” He seemed to be curious which was alright with her. He was alone and didn’t have visitors that often and he was cool. “What about you, how many friends do you have?” Kaphona’s brown eyes studied his features wondered why he wouldn’t look at her but refused to ask such questions. Believing a friend question was much safer.
Suddenly, Kaphona moved her hair up into a messy ponytail that seemed to help Kiro see her face better if he wanted to look. Her small ears covered still by the amounts of hair.
“Oh.” He seemed to be satisfied with that answer. “I have one friend now.” He smiled at Kaphona, and then went back to inspecting the floor. “I used to have a dog, but he got sick like everyone else.” Briefly, he looked up to her and asked, “Did your friends get sick too?”
It wasn’t greatest way to explain what had happened to everyone in his home, but it was the best way he could phrase it. There was no name yet for the sickness that had ravaged everything he once knew. To any outsider, it was probably the apocalypse- but, somehow he knew it wasn’t quite that bad.
He focused elsewhere again, avoiding eye contact. This time he watched the floor intently as he traced his fingertip in different shapes against it.

She giggled when he had to act out such animals roaming the woods it had made her forgot only a second about where she is. “Oh… I see then…” Unable to understand what he had meant but somewhere was hell for this kid. “So… Neither of us have parents… Well, that kinda sucks, doesn’t it?” So… Why two rooms? Was he hiding something or that a room was personal..? Her brown eyes watched him before taking the cup from him.
“Thank you so much… I’m really am glad that I met you.” Big grin before taking a big gulp of water already feeling the waters cooling her burning throat which did not hurt at all. “Oh? You haven’t? I… I guess with the animals you’ve described I would assume that then. Well, I’m glad I got to show up for you!” Kaphona continued to grin at him already liking the boy. “I go by Kaphona. Nice to meet you Kiro, I’m Kaphona Deku!” Holding out a hand towards him. “And well, I’m definitely okay being your friend because I like making friends!”
Strange boy but that’s okay. He’s cool.
"Mm!” He nodded rather enthusiastically and gave his new friend a trembling handshake. Kiro was still unused to this much social activity in one sitting, but nonetheless grateful for it. “How many friends do you have then?” He probed, giddy for an answer.
He had all but abandoned his search for injuries on the girl and was now more interested in this round of Q&A. Pulling up a pair of cushions (that had probably seen much better days) he took a seat on one and offered the other to Kaphona. His eyes seemed never to focus on her face. Eye contact was too much to ask right now. Instead, he looked at the walls, the floor, his hands- anything to occupy his interest for just a moment as he tried to pay attention to their conversation.

Darten allowed a smile to slip at the other’s words. It was more than true, he found it absolutely horrendous to have to be around strangers and socialize. Though, he enjoyed the so called “shade” and “dirt” that there were on all the various people that come up for a drink. Nothing was better than hearing the sparks of a fight and watching it unfold from behind the bar.
“Perhaps,” He shrugged in silent agreement, “It’s nice, but you get a lot of the same woe is me speech, particularly at night,” He had to prepare to have someone complain about their entire life at least three times when he worked late nights. It was all the same; small, insignificant, easily fixable problems if they just opened their mind and worked it out. Something of which, he had automatically assumed about the other.
“Care to add to my collection of stories? I’ll pour another shot,” He was interested, people who cared about what he heard and saw generally had more in-depth lives than those who don’t.
“It’s only fair, I suppose.” He mused for a moment, trying to think of a good place to start. “Hmm... I think I've lived much longer than I can summarize.” There was a pause for a moment. “The place where I was born, no longer exists. It was killed with a great sickness, and time took the rest.” He looked down at his hands and began to pick at the skin around his fingernails. He definitely was going to need at least another shot to get through this. “I’ve been told should consider myself lucky for everything I’ve been given; but, really it just feels more like a curse.”
“Can I ask you, barkeep, how old are you?” He looked up now, his gaze focused on the brunette. “Surely, you’re no older than a few decades. But, I know you’d understand my feelings if you added a couple centuries to your experiences.”

Please… Someone help me…
Tears began to form after a few seconds of waiting. There had to be someone. Feeling all hope was lost until hearing a soft pitter patter with feet and a door opening like it was on fire- “I ne-” He had hurried her in which she did not mind at all and took a full look at the boy who had brought her in. “T… Thank you.” Wiping away her teary eyes hoping the boy had not seen the girl about to cry at any second.
He was quite young in Kaphona’s eyes. Such face, hair… But the markings on his body seemed to worry her the most. Afraid to ask him what had happened to him or even his name at all. “I don’t have parents. I didn’t know where I am to be honest… I was at my home one second and then I’m here and I have no idea how or why… Why is it dangerous?” If a boy said it was dangerous around in this area then who knows what would have happened.
“W… Water please.” The home, Kaphona assumed it was his home, was quite cute since it didn’t have very much to be a clutter. Two rooms perhaps he had a sibling or a parent. “Oh, uh, I’m not injured at all, just a few bruises that is all. I’m really thankful that you had let me in.” Giving him a smile and bowed slightly.
“Hm, me neither.” He started. “I don’t what these woods are called, but there ’re lots of big animals with big teeth.” He held his fingers like fangs in front of his mouth and opened wide like an animal roaring. “The only reason I stayed...” A dark expression had clouded his face as he spoke, but he stopped himself from continuing and abruptly flashed an attempt of a smile. “...’s better here than there.” He fetched a cup of water from one of the clay jars and handed it to the girl. “Here.”
“I’m glad you showed up though.” He scratched the back of his head, with a look of something between guilt and amusement. “I haven’t seen anybody in a while.” His curious gaze continued to study the girl, trying to discern whether or not she was truly a Kodama. “What’s your name? My Mother told me that you have to know each other's name to be friends.” He explained rather matter of factly while looking at his hands. “Mine’s Kiro, but it’s okay even if you don't have one, I’ll still be your friend.”

What in the hell? Even this late at night, the typical scene wasn’t a mugging. Now though, he stood face to face with a pair of thieves who held some poor pink haired boy at both knife and gun point. A bit overkill, but still. “What do you think you’re doing?” The blue haired man sat down his grocery bag, and rolled up the sleeves on his jacket, approaching the group.
“ Fuck off if ya know what’s good for ya!” They threw a few insults, but moving deftly, within a few moments he’d gotten between them and their victim. The man with the knife was reeling from a swift knee to the face, leaving him with a bloody nose; and they were soon fleeing from the scene- having deemed this not worth their time. They did, however, make sure to leave a parting gift. Kiro didn't register it at first, but the unmistakable sound of a gunshot rang in his ears, and after a moment of confusion, the burning pain in his gut made itself known.
“Ah...” He doubled over and grasped at the slowly growing bloody stain on his shirt. Even against the black fabric of his shirt, the deep red clearly glistened. “Shit.” He sounded more like someone who had just stubbed their toe, rather than a man who'd been shot in the stomach.
