Birds of Paradise (2021): an incoherent rant
unrequited love is not queerbait ?? marine was very much gay and very much in love with kate
this movie is gothic romance in a modern setting
everybody calling kate virginia is a reference to the canterville ghost
virginia otis from the canterville ghost frees the ghost with her pure heart and her compassion
kate has a dark heart, she’s selfish and she’s not compassionate (she never truly understand marine) but in the end she does free marine from her ghosts (by breaking her heart)
I’m so obsessed by these parallels btw
marine loves too much and in a codependent way, and despite what her mother said her idea of love is pure, naive, innocente almost in childish way
that’s why she didn’t realise that what was going on with her brother was wrong, while I believe ollie was very much aware of his incestuos feelings and that eventually led him to suicide
marine genuinely falls for kate from the very beginning (when they danced together at the jungle) even before knowing about kate’s scholarship
in her naïveté marine truly believes they could both get the prize while kate is much more pragmatic and she knew from the start she would eventually betray her. During the threesome marine only looks kate, but kate is staring at felipe (aka the prize)
kate vs marine also parallels strong will vs pure talent: kate wants to be marine, to know “what it feels like to be you”
in the end kate does become marine, but actually she become marionette while marine is finally free (she cuts the strings in her final performance)
by having her heart broke marine finally faces her pain and her shame, and she understand she needs to become her own person, free from her codependency.
marine dreams about “another bird” that comes to help the injured bird. However in the final choreography the bird is alone, embrace her pain and open her heart once more to the sky, once again symbolising her being free from both kate and the ghost of her brother
this moving has nothing to do with black swan ??? black swan was about perfectionism, competition and paranoia, birds of paradise is about love, loss, and growth
I love this movie soo much idc what they say on letterbox
