What's really crazy about this is that the citizens of Trash Mountain really do just mind their own business. It's specifically mentioned they don't want to live within city walls while making up a significant portion of Lowtown's economy by reclaiming and recycling the city's garbage. These people by and large aren't criminals or bandits causing problems for the citizens within the city's walls.

So not only is Goa's king planing to murder a bunch of innocent people trying to "clean up" a problem his own policies created, but he's also hurting the citizens he ostensibly does care about in the process.

And then after the Celestial Dragons leave the kingdom just...starts dumping garbage again. No efforts are made whatsoever to ensure that the problem of Trash Mountain never repeats itself. There is no long-term solution.

There are many times One Piece feels prescient, but this flashback feels really, really prescient

For those who are unaware, Oda revealed in I believe Data Book Yellow that he heavily based Whitebeard on a man he knew, a gruff old bartender dependent on oxygen who liked to yell at whippersnappers and tell old war stories. Apparently the guy was delighted when Oda told him, and with that retrospect you can just tell in how Oda presents Whitebeard he respected him a lot.

There's a quote from Oda in the SBS for volume 82 that suits Whitebeard particularly well, and it becomes especially poignant when you know he was based on a real person

"I love me some old dudes! I feel like age adds a new sense of depth to characters, both male and female. One Piece has tons of really interesting old people! But in the real world, age tends bring people down to a weaker state… and I've always disliked how there are some young people out there who just can't have a little respect for these aged individuals because of this. So with One Piece, I've brought to life one of my countless fantasies: which is for there to be super cool old people who've maintained their strength throughout the years.One day, you also will grow old. It'd be great if all of you could remain just as strong as the One Piece oldies are!"

i truly truly will never stop being tickled by how law's braincell count just plummets into the negatives whenever he's around luffy and kid SPECIFICALLY at the same time. like if it's one or the other he copes more or less just fine. kid's a shit-starter but he's predictable and easy (and fun) to rile up. luffy runs on baffling logic but he's fundamentally easy to get along with so long as you maintain your zen and understand that he usually doesn't MEAN to get under anybody's skin. separately they aggravate law in different ways. but when they're together kid's penchant for starting dickswinging contests (or inability to not take the bait of one) collides with luffy unhesitatingly answering with a one-up that no sane person would conceive of and what the hell is law supposed to do against THAT fuckin wombo combo. get left behind and called a bitch for it? not goddamn LIKELY!!
