These two scenes are so important to me.. both of them have basically the same theme, the first one is Weiss opening up to Ruby about how she feels, how everything is gone now and how she doesn’t have a “home” to go back to anymore. The conversation started with Weiss teasing bumbleby, saying “About time” but Ruby wasn’t paying attention to them so she turned and asked “For what?” To which Weiss replied with “Nothing” noticing Ruby’s pretty distracted and out of it. Ruby then says “Don’t worry, we’ll find a way out of here and then we’ll go back home.” Not only was Weiss not even talking about that, as usual the only thing Ruby talks about and thought about during most of vol9 was trying to get out of this place and fix everything. Which made her ignore a lot of Are You Okay’s and disassociate when she realised Jaune would be no help and that she had to lead again.
(The actual important part)
Weiss then opens up to Ruby about how she feels, trying to have a proper talk and let out some of their deep burden and pain they both have been carrying, she mentions Penny, “I know that was a lot to hear,” and she waits for Ruby to say something, to open up to her just like she did just now, but Ruby can’t even look her in the eyes. So she turns away and keeps walking, Weiss looks around for a moment but eventually keeps walking without saying anything, and of course this doesn’t get brought up ever again in typical whiterose fashion.
A scene I like, because it shows the distance between Ruby and Weiss, which gradually increases as the “conversation” goes on
The second one, Ruby sees Weiss looking at a reflection of her home, the kingdom that she ‘belonged’ to that was now a fallen one, Weiss never brought up how she felt about all this other than the talk she had “with” Ruby in the first section, she’s been suppressing and coping (or at least, trying really hard to) about everything that has happened for a while now. And that’s surely noticed by Ruby as well. (There is also the fact that v9 was lacking in some places, though its still my favourite)
Ruby doesn’t say anything, she can’t just go up to Weiss and talk to her, like what Weiss did with her just moments ago, even if she wanted to, she literally can’t considering the situation they’re in at the moment. But either way, Ruby looks away just as sad as Weiss walks away miserably. We know that Ruby feels an insane amount of guilt for everything that happened, she even says to Weiss that she did everything she could, so I’m sure that Ruby also blames herself for a lot of Weiss’ pain, she knows it wasn’t just her— everyone fought hard to make this happen and everyone failed as well but as the show goes on Ruby’s darker thoughts that make her blame herself for everything even if its not rational comes to the surface. Which also caused a drift between herself and Weiss. (Everyone in general actually)
These two scenes were so heartbreaking to watch, Ruby and Weiss who have been so close for so long, close enough to notice the smallest things in others, close enough to promise they won’t leave the others side for a moment, they have gotten to a point where they don’t even need to communicate to understand each other. And I think thats one of their biggest problems.
Because they understand each other so well, and trust each other so much, they end up not communicating properly about these things. Whether its because Ruby herself is just really closed off to everything and has always bottled things up, or that Weiss doesn’t want to push Ruby too much because she knows that would just make her even more afraid to open up.. I’d say it’s both. Weiss doesn’t want to force Ruby to talk to her, and the only thing she can do is just be there for her. But that doesn’t change the fact she’s so worried and wants to help Ruby, but that will only happen if Ruby lets her in.
Funny (sad) how these two started off with constantly fighting verbally and talking it out even if it was in an.. argument way. To come to this, two people that understand each other’s thoughts so much that it’s hard to communicate with words now.
There’s also the fact that Weiss trusts Ruby with her life, so she rarely disagrees with Ruby, or has anything to say that would go against any of Ruby’s words. “I’d follow you into any battle”
Which is actually really interesting because the only time Weiss “doubts” Ruby is when they were under the influence of the apathy, and even then she immediately apologised and said that she was just really tired and basically out of it. Going against Ruby, not trusting her with her whole life felt so foreign and weird, she immediately recognises it, also being the last one to fall for it. As well as the first one to properly apologise. (And directly turn to Ruby and watch her in the aftermath, as she always does.)
Whiterose please stop ignoring the 55 elephants in the room and actually have a proper talk about all this please, preferably in volume 10, thank you.
