I think Vergil wants to be Nero's father more than Nero wants to be his son.

Nero is past the point of needing a stable parent. Of having that family to rely on. He's past the point of having someone there to kiss his scraped knee and tell him it'll all be okay.

For Vergil, it's not too late to be a father, to be supportive, and listening... in his... limited capacity for both. To protect, something he is more familiar with.

But Nero doesn't need to be protected.

Nero... doesn't want to.

Nero doesn't want Vergil to be his father.

Nero doesn't want the obligations of any family who had already left him behind. The consequences, without reaping a single reward. Just dealing with someone who wonders why he wasn't better, when he didn't raise Nero at all.

(If Vergil was just a few years sooner, there could've been something. A guiding hand. A guilty part of Nero still wants Dante to be his father. The disappointment... the shame of having a father but denying it, for the man who lied to him... It's not right. He knows this. But he's spent too long wanting, hoping, even as he aged out of the last scraps of years that could've meant something, only to be kept at a distance, given a single favor without a word of explanation.)

interestingly enough, as far as i know this is actually a localisation/translation issue.

the tone in English comes across as far more dismissive and angry than originally intended, when in reality, Vergil was very much shocked and feeling Many Things. like… ‘i have a son? Nero is my son (upset)?’

regretful, almost.
