Platonic! Leon Kennedy x Reader
Warnings: guns, blood, swearing, death, violence and so on.
The meeting room smelled like coffee and leather. It was supposed to be a normal day at the office, boring, eventless. But as soon as your boss called you into the meeting room, you knew something must have happened.
You leaned back in the chair just enough to make it creak, the sound made you cringe. Sitting up more straight to avoid putting too much weight on it.
There were a few people in the room with you, most of them engrossed in their laptop screens. Everyone was tense, awaiting the next orders. In your head you mapped out exit points, faces, things that could be used as weapons. All that happened subconsciously, just a habit.
And then there was him, Leon S Kennedy. You did not need an introduction, everyone and their mother knew who he was. He had a kind of reputation that made people whisper, tense, and be on their best behavior.
You watched him, carefully saving every detail to memory. He did not look at you, but it was clear that he noticed your stares.
“We lost all contact with the outpost around 03:00 o’clock.” The man who was briefing us continued, behind him were pictures and data projected onto a screen. “We need you two to find out what happened and retrieve our data. Do not engage unless absolutely necessary.” His last sentence was standard procedure, something they always say, but never really mean. Maybe it’s just for their own conscience.
The screen behind him now showed a video. A hallway with blood smeared across walls in uneven patterns. You tilted your head to the side, a door was seen with blood across it as well. “Doors were locked from the outside.” You said simply, crossing your arms over your chest.
“What?” The man paused, looked at you for a second as if only now really noticing you.
A quiet sigh escaped you before you elaborated your observation. “The direction of the blood smears,” You gestured lazily towards the screen before dropping your hand into your lap. “Someone tried to get out. They weren’t able to.”
Silence followed, not uncomfortable just slow and you could have sworn you heard the gears turn in his head. From the corner of your eyes you could see Leon’s head turned, glancing at you for only a second.
“Right. That’s one interpretation.” The man simply said and then continued on the details of the mission ahead of you.
You didn’t respond, because it wasn’t an interpretation. But you weren’t going to argue with him either.
By the time the briefing ended you were already halfway out the door before a voice stopped you. “Hey.” You turned slowly, glancing up at Leon who was now standing in front you of.
Up close you could make out some details in his face you haven’t noticed before. But it was to be expected that he looked tired in a way that can’t be fixed with a good night's sleep.
“You’re the new rookie?” He asked,
“Depends,” You said. “Are you my new babysitter?”
A beat of silence and then “You are the rookie.” He confirmed.
You hummed in agreement, “Unfortunate for you.”
His jaw clenched just slightly, in restraint not to say anything he might regret. “Stay behind me, don’t improvise, follow orders and don’t try anything reckless, kid”
Provoking him would be fun, but you decided to humor him and nod. “Got it. Try not to die, gramps.”
That got a small reaction out of him, a little irritated he responded. “Don’t call me that.”
“Then don’t call me kid.” You simply said.
“So does gramps.” You looked at him with a challenging expression.
He paused for a moment, before turning to the door. Leon muttered more to himself than to you. “This is going to be a long mission.”
A small smile appeared on your lips, you followed him out the door. “You know, statistically, most bad missions are.”
The car ride to the outpost was quiet. It was raining, the rain hit the windshield which created a soothing sound. It disorientated the lights from outside into streaks of light. Not once did you look over to him, too busy looking out the window.
Leon however was watching you. You felt his eyes on you. “Something you want to ask?” You said without turning your head.
“Are you always like this?” He asked.
“Annoying” Leon responded
Finally you glanced over at him. “When I feel like it.” That pulled a quiet exhale from him, almost a laugh.
A little while later the outpost came into view, it was all dark. Looming ahead like it was waiting. Leon stopped the car, and for a moment neither of you moved. “Stay close, kid.”
You reached for your handgun and inspected it, making sure everything is ready and working. “Try to keep up, gramps.”
The front doors didn’t open all the way, of course not. That would be too easy. Leon pushed it open as far as he could with his shoulder and squeezed through the gap first. With one last look around the area you followed him inside.
Inside it was too quiet. The kind of quiet that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up.
You were standing in some sort of entry hall, a front desk that was kicked over and various papers and decorations laid across the floor. Your eyes fell to a blood trail that led to a door behind the desk, like something was dragged there.
“No return trail.” You noted quietly, stepping closer carefully. Leon was right behind you, inspecting the trail as well. “Whatever made that didn’t leave the same way.” You said and then added quietly. “Or it didn’t want to.”
He hummed in agreement, pointing his flashlight around the room to find more hints. Leon did not answer to your observations, but he did not dismiss them either.
You moved in deeper to the building. Leon went first, and you stayed behind him like he instructed you to earlier. Above you something creaked, a reminder that you weren’t alone.
Leon stopped at a half opened door, looking behind him to make sure you were still there. “Stay behind me.”
“Yes sir.” You responded sarcastically, but nonetheless complied.
He took a step back and then kicked it open all the way. You lit your flashlight into the hallway that was behind the door. It was narrowed, made it harder to dodge anything if needed, or take cover.
But before you could even talk about what to do next a sound came. Too fast, a scrap of movement from the left of an office door and then something lunged out.
Leon started firing, his reaction a bit too slow than you thought his reaction time was, hitting two bullets directly into the center, the thing didn’t drop right away. Instead it slammed forward, knocking Leon down.
You didn’t move towards Leon to help him up, instead you moved to the side, aiming your gun into the dark behind him and fired. A drop of a body could be heard.
Then everything went deadly quiet again. Leon shoved the first attacker off of him and stood up, firing one shot to its head to finish him off before it could recover again. For a second neither of you spoke until Leon broke the silence.
“I did.” You simply said.
“That second one…” Leon started but you cut him off.
“They were smart, i could tell from the way it was positioned. So it makes sense that they are in pairs.” You explained like it was the most normal thing, like putting cereal in the bowl before milk.
Leon eyed you skeptically. “You predicted that?”
You shrugged a little, already moving to the other body you shot down. “Pattern recognition.” You said it like it explains everything.
“You didn’t flinch.” He pointed out his own observation, falling into step beside you.
Leon crouched down beside it, checking the entry wound. “Nice shot.” He said reluctantly.
A smirk made its way to your face, pretending to brush invisible dust off of your shoulder. “I know.”
He shook his head and stood again with a groan. “Don’t get cocky now.”
“Don’t blow your back out now, gramps.” You witted back, following Leon as he continued down the hall, deeper into the building.
Silence falls over you, moving more carefully now. Listening for any sounds, no matter how quiet.
Eventually you couldn’t take the quiet anymore and just said what has been on your mind. “Your reaction time was slower than i expected. I saw videos of other missions you were on, you were faster once. You hesitated for 0.8 seconds longer, maybe it’s the age.”
Leon stopped and slowly turned his head toward you. “Keep talking like that, and i’m leaving you here, kid.”
You just hummed as if in thoughts and then said. “Unlikely.”
Deeper into the building you came across more and more dead bodies. It was clear that something must have gotten in and infection spread faster than anything could have reacted.
Leon and you both stopped at the same time, having heard a noise. Quiet, almost like heavy breathing and little pained noise. “Survivor?” Leon asked in a hushed voice, holding his gun up and ready.
“Maybe” You responded, matching his tone.
You rounded the corner carefully and saw a man in a torn lab coat, slumped against the wall. His breathing was uneven. And on his side the blood seeped through the white coat. His head snapped up at the sound, eyes widened, he was still aware. “Please, help..”
Leon lowered his weapon slightly. “Hey, it’s okay. We’re here to help, just stay still.” He walked towards the man. But you didn’t move, gun still raised. Your eyes were fixed onto the Man’s hand, it twitched. A clear sign for infection to far down the line.
“Leon.” You said quietly, trying to get his attention without startling the man.
“Hold on, i’ve got a med kit i can help.” He was now kneeling down, on same level as the doctor.
“Leon.” You repeated, voice urgent.
That made Leon stop, he turned his head and his expression was impatient. He just wanted to help the doctor. “What?” He asked sharply.
“His hand, it’s a sign for late infection.”
The man let out a broken sound something between a sob and a laugh of disbelief. “No, i’m fine. I’m-“ Then his arm jerked forward, too fast and sudden for Leon to react. He knocked him off balance and slammed him into the ground with a force that could not have been possible in his condition before. Leon’s gun slid out of reach as the doctor's hands came to hold on his collar. Teeth snapped just centimeters away from Leon's neck.
Leon struggled, trying to get him off. But before anything else could happen you pulled the trigger.
The gunshot rang out, echoing in your bones, the doctor dropped instantly with a clean hole through his skull. Leon shoved the body off, breathing heavy. He pushed himself upright, first looking down on himself before he looked at you.
You were already moving, towards the now dead doctor. Before Leon could say anything you grabbed the man by the collar and yanked him back up just enough to stabilize his head. Then you fired again and again and again and again. Your breathing was heavier and almost angry.
Leon caught your wrist before you could pull the trigger again, your arm tensed immediately but you didn’t push him away. “Kid.” His voice was firm. “Enough now.”
For a moment you didn’t move, the grip on your gun didn’t loosen. “He wasn’t down.” You said quietly, staring down at the now completely unrecognizable face.
“He is now.” Leon replied “You got it.”
Silence stretched over you again. Then slowly your fingers loosened. The tension left your arm like it was shut off.
Leon let go of your wrist but didn’t step back right away. “You okay?” He asked, his eyes flickering over your face to make out your expression.
You blinked a few times and then your expression went back to neutral, back to normal. You tucked the gun back into the holster and turned your back to the dead body. “I told you, he was already gone.” Your voice was calm now.
He exhaled slowly, taking a step back to give you space. Leon ran a hand through his hair before responding. “Yeah, you also emptied your mag into him.”
Leon studied you for a second longer before moving to pick up his gun. You were glad he dropped the conversation and you could focus back on the mission. To get the data.
The server room was a few doors down, the lights flickering and everything was barely functioning. From the first look it was clear that some data definitely had been compromised. You positioned yourself infront of the main terminal, fingers flying over the keyboard to find what you were looking for.
“The drive is compromised, i can restore it only up to sixty percent.” You filled him in on the situation, already starting the progress. Leon stood behind you, watching the hallway more than the screen. “That enough?”
“It’s something.” You responded, sounding unsure if it was. But there is nothing you could do about it.
A loud crash sounded somewhere deeper in the building. “We are running out of time, kid.” Leon said, raising his gun.
“I know.” Your eyes didn’t leave the screen, data ran past on the screen, codes and references to something but you didn’t have time to figure it out. So you copied everything you could. “Done.” You said and pulled the drive free, putting it into your pocket.
Another crash was heard followed by heavy footsteps that came closer fast. “We’re leaving.” Leon said without hesitation or room for arguments. You stood immediately.
The way out wasn’t quiet, it was messy. Whatever had been lurking deeper in the building wasn’t hiding anymore, it sounded heavy. So you ran to the exit.
By the time you reached the exit Leon was covering you, working together wordlessly. The corners he didn’t clear, you did and the other way around.
Fresh air filled your lungs, it was cold but welcoming. Leon slammed the main door shut behind you, something collided with it on the other side. “Let’s go.” Leon said and you followed him back to the car.
Once inside he started the engine and drove straight off. It was silent, tension still in the air from everything that had happened. “You got everything you could.” Leon eventually broke the silence.
“Not everything…” You looked down at the drive in your hand.
Leon shrugged “We’re still alive, that’s something.”
“And you surprisingly didn’t blow your back out, gramps.”
“Watch it, or you have to walk back to the office.” There was no real edge behind his voice, and his mouth twitched upwards into a small smile.
You rolled your eyes. “Next will you tell me how hard your way to school was, over 3 mountains and swimming across the ocean. So i shouldn’t complain.” A grin made its way onto your face. “Oh, or how everything is because of that damn phone. You know, old people, like you, just say that because they don’t know how to use it and are jealous.” You rambled on, purely to annoy him. But also because it feels normal and calms nerves.
Leon didn’t tell you to shut up, he just joined in on banter. The air feeling less heavy now.
Back at base you were immediately escorted to the same room as before. It felt smaller now. Your boss didn’t bother sitting down, he stood with his arms crossed over his chest. “You’re telling me that you left behind critical data.”
Leon didn’t react, just stared at the man like he couldn’t do anything. Which was probably true. “We got everything we could, there was no time to-“ But you were cut off by your boss.
“Or you didn’t try hard enough, huh? Who even approved you as a rookie?” He spat out, but he didn’t stop there. “The objective was clear, full retrieval.”
You stared at him with a blank expression. “The objective changed.” Leon chimed in, coming to your defense.
“That is not your call to make!” Your boss exclaimed, slamming his fists down on the table infront of him.
“Actually, it is.” You responded in a calm tone, standing up from the chair you were sitting in and taking a step closer to him. “The last time i checked we are the ones risking our lives. The remaining 40% of data were either destroyed in the ambush or overwritten, they are gone.”
For a second his expression changed to one of surprise, before snapping back. “Just bullshit.” He said, anger returned.
“If you need it that badly, go and try to get it yourself.” You told him coldly. Behind you Leon’s voice sounded. “Kid.” It was a half hearted warning, because he does see the situation the same as you. Just wants to keep you out of trouble.
“Watch your tone, Miss.” The man said, face turning red.
“No, you listen to me now. No one is going back inside, it’s too risky. You wouldn’t get better results, just more bodies.” You stepped closer to him. “I suggest you take what we got you and be fucking grateful that you even got something back. So unless you want to go in yourself, but i doubt it, right? Because someone with your position and status is just made of money and nothing else. You are useless, ordering people around and then telling everyone what YOU accomplished, it’s pathetic.”
The room went quiet after you were finished with your speech. Leon was now standing behind you, a quiet wall. A sign that he is supporting you.
The man looked between you, Leon and back at the drive. “You’re dismissed.” He pressed out, having lost all his bite.
You glared at him a moment longer before Leon’s voice pulled you out of your moment. “Come on, kid.” You followed him outside without another word.
As soon as you were outside and far enough away from the door Leon turned to you. “You trying to get yourself fired?” He muttered.
You just shrugged. “Statistically unlikely.”
“And why is that?” He huffed.
“Because you would put a good word in for me, gramps. Don’t try and pretend you wouldn’t.” You said with a grin, playfully hitting against his arm.
Leon’s expression was trying to stay unamused but he failed, he did not argue with you.
“I knew it.” You laughed, looking up at him with a proud smile. He just shook his head and started walking, most likely so you couldn’t see the smile on his own face.
Leon started walking and you followed him down the hall towards the exit. “You hesitated.” Leon suddenly said, that made you stop to look at him.”
“Back there in the room, you hesitated if you wanted to say something or not. Maybe about a second or two. But don’t worry, maybe it’s the age.” Leon’s smug smile on his face because of his joke made you shake your head in disbelief.
“Fuck you, gramps.” But you can’t help the chuckle that escaped with it. “Let’s see if you’re still so funny when your back hurts tomorrow.”
You fell into step besides each other again, still smiling to yourself. It stayed quiet for a moment, just letting everything process in your head. So when Leon said it, you almost didn’t hear it.
Your eyes widened, turning your head to look at him with big eyes. He didn’t look at you, but you could see that he was still smiling a little. “Does that mean i can make us matching bracelets now? Which colour do you want?” Before he even has the time to respond you continued. “Pink suits you.”
Leon said your name which made you stop rambling. “Yeah?” You asked, glancing sidesways at him.
“Just take the compliment.”
“Eh, boring. Gotta keep you on your toes” You beamed.
“If you say so.” Leon responded.
The quiet lasted for about 30 seconds before you started talking again. “You would definitely wear that bracelet if i gave you one.”
“No, i wouldn’t.” Leon’s voice didn’t sound very convincing though.
“Yuh uh, you definitely would.”
“Yuh uh?” He raised an eyebrow, eyeing you skeptically.
“Shut up, kid. I swear i will bring you back.”
Testing the waters you didn’t say anything else. Now you stood outside the office building, Leon’s porsche a few meter away. “Get in, i’m driving you home.” He did not leave room for arguing.
“Nevermind, you can-“ Leon was about to say something but you cut him off by running around the car and climbing into the passenger seat.
As Leon got into the car he rummaged around in his middle console and wordlessly passed you a little bag of sweets.
“Why do you have those in your car?” You asked, eyeing the candy like it was poisonous.
Leon started his car, pulling out of the parking lot. “To get you to shut up.” He said and snatched a piece from the bag as soon as you had it open.
You ate the candy in silence, giving him the moment of peace.
“So about those bracelets.”
A/N: I hope you like it and it is as you imagined! I started playing Valorant again, biggest mistake ever.
